    - Uninstaller I tried removing one of my older program softwares which came with Canon printer's optional software. But the unstaller file seems corrupted (Uninst.isu) and prevents uninstallation. I just want more space for my hard drive and this software (5MB) not required for me now.     - Uninstalling a useless icon from control panel? Hi all Have posted this previously and thought problem was solved, but it was not. I have a program name and icon (my digital camera with a camera icon) in my "control panel", which I think I unknowingly must have installed.     - XP Home Edition with Office XP Student Teacher Edition My PC has been taking an extreme amount of time to boot, so last night I reinstalled windows xp Home SP1. For the install, I used the option of installing a fresh copy over the existing copy without reformating the disc partition. I then went to install Office xp standard for students and teachers version 2002 and the disk will not load. I copied the contents of the disc onto my hard drive and attempted to run from there, the info copied fine but it still would not execute the set-up program. It looks like a copy of the office programs are still on my C drive in the program files folder, but when I click on the app, the computer crashes. Help Please. I have now wasted about 15 hours on this nonsense. Should I reformat the HD and start from scratch? Finally, it appears that the computer is running about 50% slower than normal.     - Dead Sound Device after Software Install This is XP Sp2, C2D 6400, 2 GB RAM, Asus P5LD2 MoBo with RealTek High Definition audio device. After installing some audio software (NCH Swift Sound suite www.nch.com.au), the Realtek sound device was dead. Checking 'Sounds and Audio Devices' in the control panel, I get 'no audio device', all buttons and boxes there are greyed out. DVD-Writer, DVD-ROM and WebCam not recognized anymore. I uninstalled those in Device Manager, then running the Add Hardware wizard brought them back to life but not Realtek. Uninstalled all NCH software and cleaned the registry, to no avail, the sound device is still dead. Device is enabled, driver info says it's working properly, properties are set to 'use audio features .. use mixer features .. etc .. on this device'. Any hint as to what to try next much appreciated.     - WinXP SP3 Issues I am in a corp enviroment using Novell as NOS. I have mutliple PC's of varying makes and models. mostly HP and dell. I started updating PC's yesterday and I always do a test on them one at a time to see if the patch will cause problems with our other software. Here is my findings so far; 4 with problems : 2 without... 50% 1. One PC is now in a reboot loop whereas safe mode doesn't work... will have to do a restore. I will have to work on this problem to find a fix... i suspect it is the stop: C0000139 GDI file missmatch error... (so they said they fixed it in this release) but i will see tommorrow when i get a hold of the PC... 2. Two PC's installed fine and rebooted fine, however repeated attempts to revisit microsoft or windows update site has a issue where after the Microsoft update site finishes its scan, it reports more patches due (mostly office 2003 patches) but never the less after selecting them for download and install they all fail. Says an error like this "a problem is preventing updates to install" (or something similar). The SP3 apparently breaks both the windows or microsoft update site from being used again. However, you can go to the download site and download the patches one at a time and install them with out issue. I used Microsoft's free tech support service last night and after 6 hours of them remoteing in, i finally have a batch file that re-registers all the .dll files for windows update. This has fixed the broken updaters. 3. One PC would not allow me to log-in to the network (i am on novell client 4.91) and had to go into safe mode to uninstall novell client and reinstall it to fix that issue. 4. Two PC's installed just fine and did not exhibit the issues described above. 50% shot of it working correctly... one note however, On two of the broken ones, I used the administrator download to install it from our network drive instead of downloading from web. One of them being the reboot looper... I will hold off installing / rolling out more until microsoft releases SP3(b)... Plea for sanity... Come on MS listen to us and get it right.... This thing has to be solid if we (I) as an administrator are to roll this out to 150+ computers in my organization... or I will have each user call your free support line when they blow up....     - Can't install anything from windows update. I don't know what the problem is. I go to windows update. I click on what I want to update and then click on download/install. So the updates start downloading but when it's about to install it says "windows failed to install the following updates" and no other message is displayed saying what the problem is.     - Why do pictures from my Digital Camera cause Windows Explorer to Crash with Thumbnails? Computer is a new Dell Precision 3400 with dual core Pentium and 2 GB RAM. OS is manufacturer's load of XP with SP2 and all of the latest updates since delivery last month. Camera is a Nikon D300 shooting in 14-bit Raw mode. Sometimes -- and only in some folders -- Windows Explorer barfs when asked to display thumbnails. If it fails in a folder, it will fail everytime in that folder so there's obviously something about the pictures in that folder that kills it. BUT ... when I view the same folders from another (but older) WinXP over the network with thumbnails, there's no problem and the images of the JPG in the folder are displayed properly. What possible incompatibility could exist between a folder of digital pictures, about half .NEF and the other half .JPG and one WinXP computer but not another?     - copy user settings to default profile I was wondering if there is a way to modify the default profile so you can include mapped network drives, wall paper and desktop toolbars etc. I know how to copy a complete user account, so would I just copy the user I want over the default user?     - User received remote desktop disconnect often Several times a day a user who works remotely is receiving: "The remote session to the remote computer was ended by means of an administration tool. Your administrator might have ended your connection." When I look for info on debugging this the only thing I see is that the admin may have disconnected the user, this is not the situation. I also looked at the registry for the following: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogOn\AutoAdminLogon and saw that the value was 0. Any other ideas would be appreciated.     - Slow Printing Problem - New Twist! One of my users - like many other people out there - is having the issue where if they select "file -> Print" from just about any application on their machine, it is taking 30 to 60 seconds for the Print Dialog Box to appear. We are using ALL network printers that par printing via SMB and using Unix Based (LPR Port) printing, and all of us ar using WinXP Pro an an Active Directory environment. No other users on any other machines are experiencing this problem. And now for the twist!... Other users on the SAME MACHINE are NOT experiencing this problem! Could there be something corrupt with this users profile? (NO, we are not using roaming profiles!) If so, how to find and correct the problem? All suggestions appreciated.     - The system cannot find the batch label specified From time to time I have encountered this cryptic error, and I could not understand why the perfectly good script will generate this error, until today. It seems like the if the target label is spanning the batch processor's buffer (blocksize=512, from my observation on Win2K & XP), the error message is generated. To test my theory, I have created simple batch file as following. goto BROWSER rem ##################################################################################################################### rem ########################################################################################################################### rem ########################################################################################################################### rem ########################################################################################################################### :BROWSER If the :BROWSER spans buffer boundary, then batch processor will not find the label and throw error. It is hard to imagine that Microsoft has not encountered this issue internally. Fixing this issue will be extremely simple and it won't slow down the batch processor that much.     - Can't reassign program to file type Recently I noticed that my PLT files had lost their association with my plot program GOPLOT.EXE. I tried to reassociate PLT files with the program, but every time I do, Internet Explorer winds up as the associated program. Note that GOPLOT.EXE is a standalone executable and is not installed via the normal installation procedures, thus it doesn't show up on the default list of programs to associate with files, but in the past I just browsed for the program, associated it with the PLT extension, and it worked fine. GOPLOT.EXE still works if the PLT files are dropped on its icon, but a double-click on the PLT file brings up Internet Explorer. Any ideas? Tag: Security Center Tag: 1900454

    - Windows Time and Event Log Order Hi, I have several PCs appear to have the date change on them for periods of less than an hour every couple of days or so. When I go into event viewer and look at the appplication or system event log, I leave the default view up and as you scroll down the list the date will change then change back to the right order. If I go to View/Newest First or Oldest First, it stays consistent, for instance one event will show 2/10/08, then the next 3/10/08 then the next back to 2/10/08. Changes back to the correct date appear to sometimes occur after a synchronization with a time server so I'm assuming that events in the event log have an internal date and time that is not shown, so that in the default list view the order is correct, but the date and time shown in the list view reflects the date and time in windows when the event was recorded. Do my assumptions seem correct? Has anyone seen this behaviour before? I need to understand further how the time in the BIOS and the time in Windows work with each other. I'm further assuming that the reason the events are in that order is that the BIOS time is not changing and so the internal date/time of the event then remains constant allowing me to see the correct order of events.     - Restoring From Windows Backup Utility I am currently running Windows XP MCE. I created a backup and put it onto an external HDD. From there I copied the .bkf file to another drive and luckily I did because the other drive crashed.     - Fake Virus Warning I'm curious. How do you all respond to a fake virus warning (a pop-up window that says your PC is infected) when browsing the web? I've always used Task Manager - select the pop-up window and End Task it. That way I won't have to click any part of that pop-up window because it doesn't matter what we click (Yes/No, OK/Cancel) the malware will be installed. Sometimes I also wonder why malicious sites even bother asking us if we want it or not. Why don't they just install it silently?     - ACPI errors after sp3 I tried to install SP3 yesterday all went well then the machine would not reboot, BSOD. I eventually got it to boot by going into safe mode via F8 key the safe mode following failed install would not work. The error is that ACPI is not fully compatible, all was fine with the desktop prior to installing the new SP3. I have uninstalled SP3 and restored to earlier than installation of SP3 but still get the stop error. If I use F8 and boot ignore failure machine works fine in normal it just will not boot on its own with the ACPI error.     - XP and Vista in dualboot Hi, first of all sorry for my english! I hope not to be OT, i've this problem: i wanna install Vista and XP on the same machine, a Dell notebook. Now, i now that's better to install XP, and then Vista. This way, Vista boot loader will overwrite the XP boot loader and so i'll be able to start the OS that i want. But i know also that there was a "little" compatibility problem: if Vista and XP are both installed on the same machine, XP deletes the Vista restore points and the Vista most recent backups. I've looked in the add/remove program I can see SP3 in the add/remove program the size is 809 MB. I was expecting to see all windows update disappear from the add/remove program which didn't happen.     - Windows either full-screen or closed? Over the last few months I've been noticing odd behavior with window sizing and positioning under XP Pro here at the office. I thought it was just me, and blamed HydraVision. However, today another user complained to me of a similar (but different) problem, and they have a nVIDEA card. Basically, on her machine a small but growing number of programs will not "maximize" correctly. The window can be put into maximized mode, but will not come back out of it. Clicking the button again, to return it to normal sizing, makes the entire window disappear from the screen. Interestingly, there's no "resize animation" at all, it simply disappears, *poof*. This first appeared in a custom 3rd party app so we thought it was just a bug, but today it suddenly appeared in Outlook. Rebooting does not help, nor does all of our fidling with the control panels.     - File association icon missing Hi all, I have a laptop, Win XP, SP2, IE7. I installed Acrobat Reader 8.1.2. After experiencing some odd behavior (will open new post if I can't resolve) I uninstalled Acrobat Reader. After some tweaking and after I was -fairly- convinced that all was well I reinstalled Acrobat Reader; however, none of my PDF files show the Acrobat logo icon next to them, instead, the generic Windows file icon is present. Acrobat Reader will open if I double click the PDF file. I opened My Computer and proceeded to Tools/Folder options/Filetypes, selected the PDF file type, clicked the Advanced Button, followed up by clicking the Change Icon Button, navigated to where the AcroRd32.exe file was located, clicked Ok on various dialogs to get back to the main My Computer window. I then closed the My Computer window, reopened it, navigated to a folder where I have PDF files and found that the generic icon remains. I rebooted the laptop, but that did not help any.     - Laptop takes forever to load on docking station I have an HP laptop that takes forever to load when it is connected to my docking station at work. It boots quickly to the login screen but once I enter my password it takes almost 5 minutes to get to the desktop. I could understand if it was the other way around and the laptop was looking for a network connection when I was away from my work domain but when I take laptop off the docking station and boot, it boots normally and does not take long to load the desktop. I have been trying to "Google" this but don't understand what they say :-) On my PC & laptop, I keep getting these messages & just did a format\clean install on my laptop. It is usually 00000000 or 0000002D "Access violation at address 00000000.     - XP Home: How to overcome problem of unresponsive programs ? Dear Sir, My PC is running on Window XP Home Edition. It is a Pentium 4 PC with 520 MB of RAM. I noticed quite often that the desktop program such as Outlook Express, MS Works Spreadsheet and Word Processor can easily become unresponsive after my PC is idle for some time. I need to exit these unresponsive program by Ctrl +Alt + Del > End Task. Usually an error log would be sent from my PC to MS for this event. I have scanned my PC using Window Defender, performing system maintenance using check disk , disk defragmenter and disk clean up. However these problem still unresolved. For your information, my PC is up-to-date in term of Window updates and Service Packs May I know if there is any trouble shooting tool or driver / utilities downloads available at MS Website to fix this problem? And many of those bad reviews were absolutely accurate. My co-authors and I just completed an extensive post-Service Pack 1 revision of our book Windows Vista Inside Out. Over the past year, we installed, upgraded, and used Windows Vista on a broad cross-section of hardware designs from nearly a dozen manufacturers. During that time, we experienced some of those same performance, reliability, and compatibility issues ourselves. What we found was simple: With a clean install on well-supported hardware, everything worked just fine. But toss in an incompatible application or a flaky video, storage, or network driver, and performance could suffer. Badly. Over the past year or so, we have also observed steady and occasionally dramatic improvements in the Windows ecosystem. Most of the large issues in Windows Vista were effectively resolved by a series of updates delivered via Windows Update, including more than 500 fixes that were rolled up into Service Pack 1. Third-party hardware makers, many of whom were slow to get working Vista drivers out the door, have since released updates that can make a huge difference in the Vista experience.     - Deleting CAB Files ? Is it SAFE or NOT ? Running Win XP3, (just upgraded from SP2), and noticed that HD has 394,959 KB of CAB Files, in various folder locations either in Windows , Program Files or Temp Files, these files are identified as = (i.e; i386,- Install Shield Information,- MSN Toolbar Suite, -Temp/tbsc/disk1/disk2, etc, etc,etc.) I identified these files with Easy Cleaner, and they are all showing file Type as "WinZip Files". Question: is it safe to remove these CAB files, by backing them up to a CD Rom, and removing from my HD. It's not a matter of requiring additional HD space, have 88 GB still available, with external HD 180 GB left. Any assistance in answering this question would be greatly appreciated.     - Device Manager not working I can open System - Hardware - Device Manager but it does not display anything. I left it for quite some time in case still searching but it is not showing the hourglass. This seems to have happened since I ran XP SP3 - PC is a HP Desktop, my Toshiba laptop is OK. Not sure if related but the software that I use to download pictures from Canon EOS camera does not seem to seeing the camera which why I wanted to use Device Manager.     - Document Viewer self installing I've googled this a lot and there seems to be no real answers out there... I recently attempted to uninstall AOL software... and now... Whenever I startup my laptop I get 'Document viewer' wanting to install. After failing, it then asks me to insert the document viewer cd rom. Which I don't have because all my microsoft/windows applications were pre-loaded. After hitting cancel on this, it retries another 2 times and then comes up with a box from .NET telling me there was an exception and that an object wasn't where it wanted to be one etc... When looking in the event viewer I get 2 warning notes for Msi Installer - event 1001 and event 1004. How do I stop it??? Can I just find microsoft document viewer as a free download somewhere??? XP-SP2 - I removed a couple of programs and then cleaned their entries from
the registry. After that, Security Center doesn't recognize Zone Alarm and
AVG Free 8.0, which it did before. It does recognize Windows Firewall.
Perhaps I mistakenly deleted the wrong registry key. If so, is there a fix
for that?

Thanks, PD43! That did it. I tend to think too technical and overlook the
obvious when something like that happens.
