    - SP3 downloaded on XP Pro now some WWW have image red x's D/loaded OK, but now find when using some sites all the images are red x's; if I go to another site is OK, and if I return to original www images are then OK.     - Need some ones help here... I have an Ilo Mp3 player with a tuner I bought from Walmart about a few months ago and I was able to copy some mp3 files to it and now I can not locate the program I was using to delete the mp3 files and copy others onto it. When I plug it into my USB port, it will let the computer know it is atqched, but I can not fine any way to tranfer anything to it. The device manager tells me that it is as there, but I can access it like I can do when I connect my Motorola Razor cell phone.     - Easy Transfer Cable Error I'm trying to move personal settings and folders from my old XP desktop to my Vista laptop using the ETC. I installed the CD-Rom that came with the cable on my desktop and linked up the 2 devices but after selecting the data I wish to move and it starts to scan, I immediately get an "Windows Easy Transfer has encountered an error and must close" message.     - can't start windows after power failure OS: Windows XP professional. I leave my computer running through the day and switch it off at night. One day when the computer was running all by itself, there were several power cuts/failures from the power company and now my computer won't start windows. The logon sequence reaches as far as the black screen after Post and Boot from cd: I see Windows Advanced Options Menu flashing past, but no error message. Then the computer shuts down and reboots all by itself. This goes on and on and it is very difficult to shut down the computer. One has to pull out the power lead. After following all prescribed pre-downloading/installation requirements for SP3 and applying Method 3 (Reset the registry and the file permissions) as shown in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 the installation went without any problems - the system is running extremely well. Start, Run *winver* indicates:- MS WinXP Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111:Service Pack 3) System Properties panel indicates:- System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 When opening the Add or Remove Programs panel "Windows XP Service Pack 3" is listed, however on the right-hand side of the panel there is no indication whatsoever with respect to the size and installation date of this program (just a blank space).     - Ghost Sounds Ok, bad choice of words, but I'm not sure where to ask about this question. My computer has randomly been playing sounds (most of them are like what you hear online when you click on an ad and such or are switching through radio stations, it just happened to me again as I'm writing this). None of my windows has any ads opened and its annoying that it just starts "speaking" all of a sudden and then cuts midway.Ii've run spyware, adware, and virus software, but it still happens on and off.     - Is there SP2 or SP3 in my computer? Hello, I did not intend to install SP3 for a while cause SP2 was just fine. However a message pop up asking me to install Mediaplayer 11. I answered yes. After sometime I got another message telling me that installation was not possible because of a file. I aborted the installation and rebooted. Everything seems to be okay. But Oh surprise MyComputer properties show SP3.v.3264 How comes? What is weird is that SP2 vanished and there is no SP3 at Add or Remove Programs.     - code 39 when installing sound card to pci slot installing a sound blaster audigy card to pci slot (I tried more than one slot) when loading the drivers windows tells me they are not digitally signed...dxdiag says they are and so do the properties pages..however in device manager exclamation mark and code 39 error...ie "cannot load the device driver for this hardware the driver may be corrupted..missing etc." I also noted that all restore points up to this install are no longer there....I suspect a registry fix but what?     - Java Question Don't know where to start looking for answsers so I am starting here. I have recently been having a lot of problems with getting those nasty little red "x"s instead of pictures or graphics in e mails or in online games etc. One game site support page article indicated it might be a problem with my Java Runtime program and suggested I might not have the latest version. In checking my computer, I find that I do have program files for Java listed but they don't seem to be working. When I go to my Control Panel and double click on the Java Icon, it tells me that I am missing a registry key. I know I should probably be looking for answers on the Java website, but honestly, even though I am considered to be more than a novice with computers, they are way over my head.     - Printer Driver Installation? A neighbor has a Gateway computer with windows XP (SP2) and is approximately two to there years old. Her husband has purchased the computer for his use but passed away approximately a year ago. Approximately three months ago, a family member tried to setup the computer and was able to get it working (mostly). However, they could not get the printer to work and I was asked to see what I could do with it. I looked in the printer/fax Icon in the control panel and did not see any printer icon. I should note that the printer model is a HP 3520. I rebooted the computer hoping that windows would pickup the printer by plug and play and install the applicable driver. Unfortunately that did not help. If I remember correctly, I could start the Add Printer Icon feature and could manually select the HP 3520 or a similar HP printer. However, it has been a long time since I have used this feature. Any comments about the use of the feature would be very much appreciated. I did check for the latest driver for down load at the HP web site and it is rather old, 2003. So I don't know how well that would play with windows XP. I should note that the computer is a bit shaky at best and I don't want to do something to push it over the edge. I don't have the time to do any major trouble shooting and repair.     - Sharing Files Between Home Vista and Home Windows XP? I just bought a new Windows Vista Home Edition, and we already have a Windows Home WIndows XP. Both are on the same Linksys router, the old Windows XP's IP address is 192.168.1.100 and the new Vista's is 192.168.1.102 I can ping the old Windows XP (at ...100) from the new Windows Vista (...102), but not vice versa. They both belong to the workgroup "WORKGROUP". All I want to do is share files between these two home computers on the same LAN. The Windows XP cannot find the Windows Vista computer through Windows Explorer, but Windows Vista at least asks for a login and password when I try to view files on Windows XP via \ \192.168.1.100\c$ Further, when I enable the Guest account on Windows XP, Windows Vista says it cannot even find the Windows XP computer at all.     - SP3 failed when installing Seemed to take forever for it to get going but it finally got to where it says something like "checking registry" ot "modifying registry" at that point it stopped and gave me an abort install message. I was left with no choice but to uninstall the bleeding thing...THAT left me with a message saying XP has been modified but not completely and may not work properly. Thank you MS.. you dolts. The machine then rebooted on its own and gave me a blue screen saying it couldn't find a file... but then it did and it loaded after a long pause. It's working now but I am afraid to shut it off, I'm backing up the files I didn't have backed up prior to this fiasco. I don't even know if I shut the machine off it will restart.     - missing information bubble Appologies if this has already been answered but I've looked everywhere and can't find an answer. I have lost the 'information bubble' that appears on the taskbar when, for instance you go to 'safely remove hardware' there is a 'pop' sound and a 'bubble' appears saying that is is safe to remove drive X. I attempted to repair by repair install of WXP with SP3 slipstreamed but the problem was not cured.     - I can't connect to ftp server with ftp.exe Hi. I'm trying without success to send an access file into a ftp server folder. my script start to upload and stop in command number 150. The ftp connects to the server, it enter in the specific folder sart to send the file but stop. If I use a FTP server I can see that the file is already in the ftp server folder because the name is there but with zero bytes and it stops. I have a batch file that calls the commands in a text file.     - Incorrect SD Card Size read Aloha all. I don't know if this is really an OS question, so it may be OT, but I don't know what it is. Maybe someone can help, or at least point me in the right direction? I bought a digital picture frame. I wanted to load a bunch of pics onto an SD card. I used a 1GB SD card, and tried to load about 300MB. At 216 it stopped and said the card was full. It's not. I then tried a 512MB card. Same thing! I then tried a 1GB USB Flash Drive. Same thing! I then tried both a 4GB USB Flash and SD card. Both did the complete load fine. Why do the 1GB and under state they are full at only 216MB? I even reformatted the cards several time with no effect.     - BSOD when installing XP on SATA2 PC - no SATA 2 host adapter drive When XP came out in 2001 it only supported EIDE, but my SATA 2 system needs SATA 2 host adapter drivers to install. My BSOD stop error indicates that my SATA 2 hard drive (and) controller is not being seen. I even tried running a USB external floppy drive to load the drivers with the F6 prompt, but you need a complicated file on the floppy called "oemsetup.info" or something like that which I have no idea how to create. I haven't been able to get my 32-bit XP to install, but I really wanted to go X64 on this system. I 'm not 100% positive, but I even think that I have the required SATA 2 drivers, but I can't find a way to use them. I have fought with this thing for weeks and have almost been in tears, but I know that there is a way that this can be done! The answer may be complex, but there is a way to do this... Please help!!! If trying to load SP3 and you get an error saying it can't load due to a core file (kernel) being changed. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327101 It gives choices, none of which worked in our case. But did make us stumble onto the fix. Seems Tune Up Utilities 2008 can change your startup in boot.ini to use TUKernel.exe not Kernel.exe. Something about a new splash screen etc. SP3 does not like this and aborts.     - registry question - display DPI location? Was a l-o-n-g time user of 800 x 600 screen resolution; used standard small font display setting. Recently decided to change to 1024 x 768 because a geography program requires it, however finding the right combination of desktop fonts and font sizes was tough. Ended up changing the display DPI (desktop, properties, settings, advanced) to custom, 108%. This setting with the combination of fonts is do-able on these tired old eyes! But now, another program (encyclopedia software) will not start because IT requires 'Normal size, 96 DPI' to be displayed !! (go figure) I believe the software will display just fine (will be readable) with 103 DPI so the question is, what (registry?) setting is the program looking at startup to check DPI setting?     - Accessing Files - Security Problem My computer broke and i decided to get a laptop. I brought an external HHD enclosure, so i can use my 3.5" HDD from my old computer on my Laptop. But on some of the files, I cant seem to acess them, ie on on one of my .mp3 files, i get this message with Windows Media PLayer : Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.     - Wireless mouse issue or Computer? I have the Microsoft Optical Mouse Blue. Has worked great. Recently, it takes at least 3 clicks to open web pages and email and pretty much anything I do on the computer. I changed the batteries so that is not the issue.     - Welcome screen screensaver XP with one limited, administrator and guest account. All three are set for the supplied "blank" screensaver after 5 minutes of idle. That is exactly what happens if logged in to a specific account. However, when the welcome screen is displayed the bouncing Windows XP logo screensaver kicks in. What controls the screensaver for the welcome screen? I would like the blank screensaver for the welcome screen as well. For a long time the blank screensaver came up when in welcome screen. I decided not to install it yet, I'd do it over the weekend (I have WU configured for "Notify but don't automatically install"). Now the update notice is gone. This happened on both my computers. The operating system on my laptop is newer than the one it came with. If
I locate the upgrade CD [I can't think of its' name, but I used my
sisters] will it reformat and install without having to go into bios etc
(just ask for original key)?

By newer it probably means that its been updated to the latest sp level, and
that is later than that on the installation cd.
You cannot use an win upgrade cd if that upgrade is in use on another PC
The key that is located on the Laptop is the key for the original
reinstallation cd, it wont work with any other cd.
What 'exactly' are you trying to do & why?

I'm trying to do a reinstall to wipe any junk. Also I'm finding Norton
Internet Suite is slowing it down.

It is booting off the CD now. The Other CD I installed was the SP
upgrade. Microsft posted free of charge.

OOPS!! Bought it in Hong Konk......is in Chinese.
