Why?
System Restore creates Restore Points automatically approximately every
24 hours (if the computer is running). In addition, Restore Points may
be created by automatic updates, install routines of some applications,
and sometimes by malware removal applications just before the removal
operation is begun. And a user can manually create a Restore Point at
any time.
By default, Windows XP allocates 12% of the disk space for Restore
Points, which on large disks is much too large. You should reset it to
about 1 GB.
Restore Points are added until the allocated space is used up, at which
point the oldest RPs are removed to make room for new ones. Also, RPs
are deleted after about 90 days.
In general, there's no good reason to have a lot of RPs. Restoring to a
point that is days or weeks old is likely to lead to problems if not
done with some careful thought.
Finally, System Restore only saves and restores the "system." It does
not save or restore your applications or data.
