When I turned on the computer a notice popped up saying I needed to activate
WindowsXP Home.I have not changed or added any hardware that would require
reactivation?

Go ahead and activate. If internet activation does not work, leave the
activation window open and call the activation center.

Physical hardware changes are not the only thing tracked. I've
encountered PA requests when updating video card drivers or disabling/
enabling Ethernet (wired) network adapters. PA seems to be "flawed"
periodically. Hope that MS will somehow "remove" this when XP is
"retired" completely.

I connected a friends LCD monitor to my system to test it. Had to
re-activate after re-connecting my LCD monitor. Seems strange that would
happen.
