    - XP system restore - cannot restore, so now what? I very rarely use the system restore feature, but of course it's a godsend when I do. Last night, I inadvertantly cleaned up some desktop icons I didn't wish to, so I figured I'd just do a restore to that morning's restore point to put my desktop back the way it was. So the standard stuff happened, then upon restart, I got the message saying "Cannot restore. No changes have been made to your system" The only "cure" I'm aware of for this is to disable system restore, then re-enable it. Which is fine, but what if I really really really needed a restoration? Again, in this case, it's not a life or death thing; I was restoring for a cosmetic fix. Questions: 1. What causes system restores to not work? In my case, I can be very sure it's not viruses or malware. I'm a safe computing person, and the system is regularly cleanly scanned for such threats. The only time I've ever seen this happen before was when I had a bad physical sector on the disk of an older computer. 2. Is there a way to use the system restore data I have to somehow "restore" my system, independent of the system restore utility? 3. Other than doing an occasional pointless "set a restore point, then immediately restore to that point," is there any way to ensure that my system restore capabilities are intact? Why doesn't XP warn that something is wrong with this capability? 4. Any trick other than the disable system restore, then re-enable it, that I can try to reinstitute system restore functionality?     - Are the Net framework 1.1 install files stuffed or something I managed to slipstream Net framework 1.1 and 2 (with updates). Only thing is, in add/remove programs it said 1.1 maybe corrupt. I thought installing Net framework 2 corrupted the 1.1 install. So, to test this, I removed the NF 2 files, and installed the 1.1 files. Same thing happened. Is there a trick to installing Net framework 1.1 or something?? Since it doesnt matter if I install it by itself or slipstream it with Net framework 2, or install it after I install XP (not slipstreamed) the install is still corrupt Or is it one of the 1.1 updates that screw the NF 1.1 install up??     - Under what architecture is Windows XP compiled? I know it supports x86 processors, but what I don't know if XP is "compiled" under i386 (there are in fact several folders named 386 in the WINDOWS directory) making it upward compatible with later processors: i486, i586 and i686?... or, is it locally "compiled" when installed in any PC in the latest architecture available? In other words: does XP take advantage of the latest i686 instruction set when installed on a P2 o newer processor?     - reinstalling Xp home (CD lost) I have lost my CD, but still have the product key from the CD. I need to reinstall Xp. Can I just borrow someone else's CD to reinstall Xp and then enter the product key for the CD that I purchased several years ago (rather than the product code on the borrowed CD)?     - Windows seems slow recently, sound stutters etc. I don't know what has happened but it is running like a dog. It takes longer to boot up seemingly. It seems to other performance probs too, the mouse pointer is 'sticky' and it stutters playing music, or maybe video but it is very noticable on sound. Even when the cpu is 'idle' supposedly. There seems to be a mismatch between the cpu usage bar in the system tray and the cpu in task manager, but that my be due to delays betwen the two perhaps. I have been mesing about with it recently, I installed ubuntu to my second drive. I aslo took the page file off that drive, but I have put it back now - not difference, does it need a reboot to take effect? I also opened the multi channel sound manager, I have never used that before but was curious, I don't recall making any changes. I also installed the latest AVG free, I have the link scanner diabled now. I killed off most/all of the avg stuff and that seemed to make no difference. I had also been transfering data off another drive by putting it on as slave, I got the jumper setting wrong a few times resulting in error, and no boot, but when I got the setting right it was OK. One of the drives I tried was dead previously in another machine, I tried in this this one to see it it was justthe other machine it would not work in. (it seems a gonna). I also put in a network card (ethernet 10/100) which I thought was dead, it didn't seem to show up in device manager so I took it out. Another thing I did was to change my conection from the computer to cable modem from USB to ethernet port. Some of this involved using the network set up wizard. This always seems to finish with an error (unspecified) Any ideas chaps? Could be a lot of red herrings there, I will try and undo a lot of the 'stuff' I have done. It's not too bad really but music sounds bad with stuttering, so noticable. Any ideas diognostics? Windows XP SP2 on sempron 3000 1.2 gig ram, 80 and 250 gig drives 25 and 85 gig free respectively.     - Follow Up to Error Scheduling Tasks My wife and I are the only persons using this computer. I am the Adminsitrator. I never entered a password in the User when I originally setup the computer. It boots up entirely without asking for a User Name or Password. I have put in other Scheduled Tasks in the past with a particular password and it always worked. I understand after a period of time, Windows no longer recognizes a password. Is there any other way you could suggest to find the password I used in Scheduled Task and change the existing password if there is one?     - Invisable Files On DVD Drive I use XP Home Edition and have a dvd drive/burner installed. Recently I tried to intall new software but when I insert the disc there appears to be no setup.exe file to run. when I open with My Computer half the file are invisable or not there. When I put the disc in another computer the setup.exe and other files are on the disc. The files I can see have no extension and are just labled system or file. The icons are just plain and the folder hyperlink does not work on them. Any folders will open but no exe files are visable. I can rip and burn CD's and DVD's and picture files work ok.     - MMC and Snap-ins I can not get any snapins in MMC. It just says that there is an error, sends it to Microsoft, and shuts down. I am using XP pro sp3. Flash disappeared and I can not get it to reinstall, I can not see any of my devices in device manager. My consol under MMC is blank and it shuts down if I try to add any snap in.     - XP and SATA drive assignments Hi, How does XP assign SATA drives? I'm having unepxected results when trying to image a SATA HDD. I configure XP on a SATA HDD connected to SATA0. I then attach another HDD to SATA1 (or another SATA channel). I would expect the orignal drive to be assigned disk0 in XP disk manager but no, it decideds that the secondary drive will be drive0 and the drive in SATA0 will actually be drive1. Why is this? It makes it very difficult to predict which drive will be which, when trying to clone drives. It makes no sense to me, which is why I'masking this question. At least with IDE, you knew which drive would be set as the first drive. Isn't SATA supposed to make life easier (without the need to use jumpers and worry about IDE channels)?     - Regarding CCCleaner I've seen this program referenced a number of times in this forum. I run CA Antivirus, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender twice a week. What can cccleaner do that can't be done through normal Windows cleanup procedures--Disk Cleanup, etc? Is this program a "registry cleaner"? Are there potential dangers in using it?     - Getting Bogus Error Message When loading web pages Iâ??ve got several shortcut icons on my desktop for websites I frequent. Which I click on them I get a dropdown with the name of the site and the following script: â??Windows can not find â??http:://www.xxxxxx.com. Make sure you typed the name Correctly and then try again. To search for a file click the start button and then click search.â?? About a half second later, the web site opens without a problem, so the dropdown is bogus. It require manual closure, so is a nuisanceâ?? I ran a malware search and the system was clean.     - Missing Entire Network in My Network Places XP Pro SP 3 When I open up the My Network Places icon on the desktop (or in the Explorer) to view all of the contents of the network, I can some other shared resources, but the Entire Network icon that should be there is not.     - Multiple issues - runtime errors I'm using Windows XP servie pack 2, and have run anti-virus programs I'm having multiple issues with my computer. The most common one is the runtime error messages I keep getting. A common one is : Object doesnâ??t support this property or method", but there are many different ones. They don't cause any problems that I can directly ascribe to them, but they do come up often, usually in 3 or 4's, and occasionally infinite, whereupon I have to reboot. Other things on my system are also giving me problems, and i'm noting them here because I don't know if they could be related or not. - Installed a broadband card, but can't get it to work. It's been tested on a laptop, so I know it works fine. When I try to run it, I just get the message Sprint Smartview has encountered a problem and needs to close. I've uninstalled/re-installed a few times, includiong d/ling the software from the Sprint site. The problem IS with my system, but I can't locate it. - My Canon scanner which previously worked now cannot be located by Windows.     - "~XB1ACD" corrupt files-how to rename/fix I have a mumber of files, all types, .txt, .doc, .jpg They have the correct file name, but have an added "~XB1ACD" (w/o the quotes, various letters after the ~) added at the end of the file that interferes with the correct file association. Note: The files are OK...I can manually rename a file deleting the part including and following the ~ (the tilde)...and the file is conpletely intact. What command and syntax can I use to to find these files and delete the unwanted ~* file extension. I think this is something I knew 15 years ago with Dos...but I can't remember.     - How to beat activation OK first of I do own a legal version of XP Pro SP2 (Retail). The reason I'm trying to get round activation is in the past I have activated allot online, when I didn't know you could only do it a set number of times before you have to keep going through the hassle of ringing tech support and giving them my code number then they read me one back etc etc. Now I have read that if you back up 2 files called "wpa.bak" and "wpa.dbl" then once xp is reinstalled go into windows as normal and when asked for activation just reboot in safe mode and copy these 2 files back into the windows/system32 folder overwriting what might be there, as described here http://tinyurl.com/5zmqqy I have also read that if you format the hard drive (which I want to do) then this will not work, but (please bear with me) when I partitioned and formatted my drive I took an image of just that, so the image has nothing on it just the 2 bare partitions then I went about installing my copy of xp about 7 months ago, now I have gone back on that old image (of just bare partitions) and installed a fresh copy of XP and tried the trick as mentioned above with the 2 files but it failed to work, it said something like "I need to activate before logging in" so it didn't work for me. The only thing I can think of that is causing the problem is when setting up windows it asks/gives the computer a name I "think" the fresh install was a different name so I'm guessing this could be the problem but welcome any feedback from anyone. I have to stress I'm not trying to screw the activation process up or do anything illegal I just want to save the hassle as mentioned above, I have posted to a few groups that I think may be relevant so sorry if you see this elsewhere.     - Windows performance monitor with multiple processors I configured Windows Performance Monitor (a.k.a. perfmon) to record data on the CPU utilization by software processes. The system has four processors. The "Process(_Total)\% Processor Time" performance counter includes all 4 processors. However, this appears to include the "time taken" by the "Idle" process. However, the "Processor(_Total)\% Idle Time" appears only to include one processor. Does this make any sense? Or is there some other data I should be collecting?     - Partial downloads I've been having problems downloading from commercial websites. When I click run, the download gets from anywhere between 0% and, say, 58%, or anything in between and then just stalls. I repeat, and the same thing happens. On rare occasions the download goes quickly and completely, sometimes after many, many attempts, and sometimes it just never downloads.     - Help Needed - Cannot Update, Administrator Privileges Broken This all started when I noticed I was short a few windows updates on XP SP2. I decided I should run WU manually, and ran into a roadblock. It tries to install Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, which fails every time. OK, simple enough. I went on the here and tried all the fixes: manually reinstalling WGA, running the tool the MS guy recommends, nothing works. My office's IT guy happened to be in, so I asked him. He says just download SP3 standalone, should be a workaround. Downloaded, tried to install. "You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator." ...What? I'm on an account in the administrators group for my system. I log off and into my computer's Admin account. "You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator." At this point, I'm stumped, IT guy is confused. Googled around, got a series of DLLs to re-initialize. They are: REGSVR32 wuapi.dll REGSVR32 wuaueng.dll REGSVR32 atl.dll REGSVR32 wucltui.dll REGSVR32 wups.dll Regsvr32 msxml3.dll Regsvr32 msxml2.dll Regsvr32 msxml.dll wuaueng.dll fails on a 0x80070514. As far as I can tell, there is nothing anywhere about that dll and that error code. System restore gives a permission error. I have checked , User Rights Assignment -> Take ownership of files or other objects and my Administrators group is a member. I've also tried adding the local Administrator account and my user account on the domain to the list, both of which had no effect on the problem. We have a small office, and our IT guy tells me he hasn't put any such restrictions in effect on any of the office computers.     - Storing enviornment variables Hi, I am running Windows XP. I was curious where I can store environment variables so that they can be stored the next time I boot my computer. Currentlyi, if I go to the Start Menu, click "Run" I can type set MYVAR=abcde echo %MYVAR% at the command line.     - TASKBAR & DESKTOP ICONS Hey all, all of a sudden every few hours, my Taskbar and the Desktop Icons disappear. The only thing I can see is my Background Color from HP.     - Help with setting up a cd Dear All I appreciate this may not be the right newsgroup, but if anyone can either help or point me in the right direction, thank you. I have produced a CD with two items on it. The CD is set to autorun an html file. On the page that loads, there is a link to a website on the disk and another link to a program on the disk. but it wont work. I need to sort out the coding. The Website link works fine, but I cannot work out the code, to get the other link to work, it is an .exe file which will run a programme. I want this to work directly from the link.     - How to use word as a message format along with a signature default When I use Outlook (2000), I'm not able to use an automated signature option when I have word as my outgoing mail to edit messages. Signature picker will not allow me to access it once I check the â??use MS Word to edit e-mail messagesâ?? box.     - mutiple windows activations from same location. I recently purchased several (35) pc's at a government surplus wharehouse. The machines all have valid win XP pro stickers. Since they are ex government pc's the harddrives have been stripped out of them. I was using the "new" pc to replace older ones here at work, and everything was fine till a week ago. I had reinstalled and activated about 16 machines with no problems, but now I am forced to call microsoft every time I activate one. They are valid codes, but I think microsoft has become suspicious of so many activations from the same IP. If the code is valid why should they care?     - Help !! XP Home administrator priviledge problem Hi. I wanted to read a region 1 dvd and had 2 changes left on my dvd region changing option dialog. One to change, one to change back I thought. Unfortunately when I went to change back, possibly because it was the last one, it said I needed administrator priviledges. Checking the user accounts I already had that. Nevertheless I booted into safe mode and selected an administrator account that wasn't there on normal boot up. But it still gave me the same error and wouldn't let me change it.     - Firefox 3 and XP crashes this site Here is a problem that was posted over in Mozilla.Support.Firefox on June 24 entitled "FF3 Crashes on this Webpage." It has been thoroughly thrashed out there but with no solution. I bring it here seeking a solution because there seems to be a conflict between FF3 and Win XP. I am not the OP and I hope by bringing it here I have not offended this NG or Mozilla.Support.Firefox in any way. Briefly, the problem is that this site http://www.ramonadisposal.com causes a crash in Firefox and produces an error message saying,"Firefox has encountered a problem an needs to close...." The error signature is: AppName: firefox.exe Appversion 1.9.0.3071 ModName ntdll.dll ModVer 5.1.2600.5512 and seems to occur when Flash Player tries to show the large image in the upper right corner of the site. The small image on the left displays correctly. Now for the specifics. I have Firefox 3 installed on my Laptop and my desktop. Both are running XP Home SP3 and Adobe Flash Player 9.0.124.0. The laptop renders the site just fine but the desktop produces the error above. I installed Firefox on both machines from my administrative account (MAIN). If I go to this site while running as MAIN the error occurs. HOWEVER, if I switch to the guest account or any other account including the Administrator, the site renders with no problems. That seems very strange to me. What I have done: I have compared the Firefox prefs.js and user.js files on both machines and they are identical. I have used the FF Profile manager to run FF on the desktop with the laptop's profile but the problem still exits. I have deleted FF on the Desktop and installed it again. No luck Running FF in the safe mode (firefox.exe -safemode) doesn't solve the problem. Likewise, booting XP into safe mode doesn't either.     - rebuild search index How do I rebuild the search index in Windows XP? I downloaded Windows Desktop Search, but searches are incomplete. I read that rebuilding the search index would eliminate this issue.     - Missing Desktop, Icons, Start Menu Hi...I am in need of someone's help before my husband tosses th computer otta the window. This past week we decided enough is enoug and got high speed internet. My husband's computer is pretty old an has not had very many if any updates ran so he decided it was time. it through my desktop as a drive (Z:\). Other times it just disappears and
even typing in the address, it can not be found. Sure would like to know how
to keep this available.

I have a desktop connected to a wireless router; both the computer and
printer are connected via Ethernet cable.

Hi Ed,

I have seen similar issues with HP All-in-one printers
and Ethernet. I could only get the printer to work
reliably. The only thing I found that worked was
to connect the printer with a short (less than 7 foot)
USB cable.

Sorry for no better news.
