    - Opening My Computer Slow I have one computer/user at an account that has an issue with MyComputer opening VERY slow. It is as though it is looking for something on the network and having no luck finding it. However, there are no apparent mapped drives that can not be resolved or other such things. The system is otherwise clean and has been checked for all manner of malware. Where in the registry or in the user profile would I look to make sure there are no "network places" it is trying to resolve and can't? Thanks for any suggestions.     - Printing issue. Hi All, When I give print to a shared printer (HP LJ 1022) which is installed on a windows 2000 server from my win xp sp2 system I get a dialog box which reads 'Windows explorer has encountered an error". In the event viewer the details shown are as follows: 'Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module sr32.dll, version 6.0.909.0, fault address 0x000287de.' Please note that this issue is occuring in two machines. Other machines on the network with win xp sp2 are able to print with no issues. Can anyone guide me on this please?     - Machine slows to crawl, no other program running Hello, I ran sypbot and ad aware and have Sophos antivirus running all the time. Something has been boggin my system down later, so I have to wait for every little task. I have a Dell D800 laptop with 2 gigs of ram. When no progrms are running, in the performance dialoge, the pages/sec is completely maxed out TEh cpu is running about 70% and the average cue length is about 60 percent. I have 14 items in my system tray, sophos anti virus, spybot, smart sync for backups, hotsync for palm, hot folders, which gives recent folders, ad aware service, the rest are sound, disconnect device, windows stuff. 49 processes are running. SavService a sophos part is using significant parts of cpu, 40, 50, .... But I need it. If I restart the computer runs great. Is my computer hijacked? Is something running I can't find?     - Rearranging Programs list Executed Start / Programs and got a list that showed all programs. I was attempting to rearrange these programs alphabetically and accidently moved it over to my desktop. Now the program folder is showing on my desktop and I don't know how to get it to show back up when i click Start / Programs. I have had this happen once before and I can't remember how I solved it.     - WinXP Sp3 Hello Group I would like to check that indeed Microsoft created the SP3 version of the WinXP but was cancelled or possibly shelved to give way to Vista.     - I have huge number of .txt (text) files 7/Jan/2008 0:31 I have huge number of .txt (text) files . They are bogging down both my computer and me, so I want to get rid of them. Since I am a 'pack rat' I want to save them: 1. Go to My Documents; 2. select about 15 text files; 3. right click on one of them; 4. choose 'send to'; 5. choose CD-RW Drive (E) 6. insert disc into Drive E; and 6. delete the files if necessary.     - Boot as 2nd drive = boots OK: as only drive it fails. Neighbor had pc not booting. I have same model so put his drive in my PC to save his pictures/music etc in case needed to reinstall XP. When I put the drive in my Pc, ( cable select - his was second connection on primary IDE cable) I booted my drive and it announced - "need to scan secondary drive - was shutdown improperly" , so I let it scan/fix his drive and I could see his files in XP - copied to CD - all set. Rebooted and ON MY PC I have had 2 boot options on MY primary drive, ( I often have several drives in there) so I elected to now boot his ( as secondary drive). His drive booted up - looked good. I bought back to his house ( thinking I was done) and it hangs (his only disk drive). It STARTS to boot and looks good .... just before it would be at the user profile screen ( 2 users) it hangs at a "XP Home Edition" screen. I removed what I could from his box in case something hanging it, but same thing, so I brought it back to my house. Put back in as secondary drive - booted it -- OK. HOWEVER, if I make it the ONLY drive in my PC ( as with his) using primary IDE cable - master connector , it hangs on my PC too - same spot. I then had it as ONLY drive on my pc - using primary IDE cable - slave connector - same thing. so , ( FINALLY !) to my question: What is different OS-wise when it is hooked up as the secondary drive ? What is happening JUST before the user names appear on-screen. Also .. more info ... in no case on either Pc using either connector can I get Safe Mode ( or any other F8 option) to work when I boot that drive.IT will let me SELECT any of the F8 options ( Command Prompt, Safe Mode , debugging etc), but it does the same things onscreen, hangs at same spot. I expected it to get me to a C:\ prompt - WHY is it getting me to the XP user profile screen ??? AND when after hanging I do a hard power-off, it never notices that I powered it off. I EXPECTED it to announce- shutdown improperly - need to scan disk - it doesn't. Back in as second drive ( with another XP drive as primary) and still works fine.     - Software installation troubleshooting issue Attempting to install Microsoft Accounting Express 2008. Download proceeded without incident. Installation proceed for a few minutes only to generate the message: Setup failed to install MOA2008. See C:\ Documents & Settings\Maurice\ Local Settings\ Temp\ Mbsetuptmp137.log Regrettably, I can only navigate to the 'Maurice' Folder as Local settings folder is not seen and I am logged on as Administrator.     - svchost problems I have been having problem with my system where it would run fine for a while than seem to freeze. I was able to find out that in the task manager sorted by CPU that svchost.exe would be at the top of list using about 6 megs of memory. I found that if I ended that process the system would work fine. I finally felt that Norton Virus program might be the problem (no way to tell what was using the svchost.exe process) and uninstalled both the Virus and Live Update programs. Now the system works fine and svchost.exe is not there. So I assume that this was the problem. I have had problems with Norton causing problems with other machines at work so I will not be using this program again. I think I will probably be using either Trendview or McAfee - not sure which yet. My question is whether there is a better way to find out what program an svchost.exe is connected to?     - Logical Disk Manager (LDM) is not registered I cannot access the Disk Manager and get the following error message: "Logical Disk Manager (LDM) is not registered. LDM supports Windows 2000 or later. Check the operating system version on the computer named ..."     - MMC disabled: how do I get the registry right? I noticed early last year ago that MMC (Microsoft Management Console v5.1, the version that shipped with Windows xp) had stopped functioning. If it's opened the interface window is just empty, and the MMC folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Application Data \Microsoft\MMC is blank too, same with the corresponding folder on my personal account (which also has some admin powers). I'm sure some registry keys have been erased too, no doubt by a virus - as I said this change happened quite a while ago and there's no sign of raging infection on the pc now. Still, I'm planning to do an overall reboot of windows in a few weeks, but before that I'd like to get the MMC in order again. The MMC files under System32 are intact: Directory C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 774,144 b mmc.exe 66,560 b mmcbase.dll 1,136,128 b mmcndmgr.dll 46,592 b mmcshext.dll but they don't get through. I'd appreciate any informed help with getting the registry settings right, and also with protecting against this stuff for the future (the security systems have proven effective for a long time, but seems they didn't notice this). I'm not a whix z when it comes to registry repairs but I do know how to import changed keys, back up reg settings and so on.     - Unattended Installs Does anyone use this tool for Unattended deployment for Windows XP or Windows 2003 in their corporate environment? Is this allowed? I am concerned with anything nLite may add into the unattended media. Security risk? This is the best tool I have found that has the ease of bundling drivers for RAID cards and Security patches/Service Packs. This is mainly what I would use it for.     - Re-installation of old version error My younger brother did something stupid with our PC and now it is a complete mess... We have a service pack 2 CD and XP cd as well (older version)... Originally, the PC has winxp but my brother installed the service pack... Now the PC has 2 OS..when you try to restart, you must select which one you want to run.(.the original XP or the service pack.)     - AutoPlay Not Working Hi friends, I posted a message a few days ago about my computers CD/DVD AutoPlay not working at all. I "never" could fix it. BUT I installed Windows Media Player 11 last night and lo and behold my computers CD/DVD Auto Play started working! When I put a CD in either of my computers DVD/CD players/burners windows now gives me a pop up box and gives me choices of what I want to do. Including Nero 8.xx functions, ACDsee Pro 2 functions, Windows Media Player, etc etc. I am really happy about that.... That was an easy but completely unknown way to me way to fix it.     - Problem Booting Windows XP Home I'm encountering a very puzzling problem with my wife's laptop, a Dell Inspiron E1405. We live about 40 miles from Santa Fe, NM and on Friday we drove to Santa Fe and my wife brought her laptop along with us so she could read me some stuff she had written. When we returned, she wanted to get online but the wireless was taking some time to, I believe, get synced up with the router and so she decided to reboot. The reboot process failed with a blue screen which indicated a problem with plug and play with the likely cause suggested as a driver problem. I have been unable for the last day and a half to get this laptop rebooted with Windows XP i.e. Windows XP Home. When we first got this laptop, about a year ago, I installed Fedora Linux on it. However, since it is my wife's laptop, she has not used the Linux installation. Anyway, I discovered that I am able to boot the laptop with the Linux installation just fine which suggests that the hardware being used by Linux is fine. I was also able to boot a Linux Live CD which allowed me to perform a backup of my wife's files. After getting her files backed up, I decided to see if I could run the diagnostics on the laptop and try to repair the XP installation with the original media. There are some pre-boot diagnostics that are available for running on a menu which one receives after pressing F12 during the boot process. I ran those and they all passed. I tried to boot from the Windows XP reinstallation CD but this failed with the same blue screen which claimed a plug and play error. I booted with the Dell Drivers and Diagnostic CD which came with the laptop and ran all the tests which are available including the ones in the troubleshooting option for not being able to boot. All of these passed. I booted with the Dell Media Direct reinstallation CD but that did not seem to offer me any options that I wanted to pursue at this time. So, that is where I am now. I'm really puzzled by all this and am not sure how to proceed. I'm very knowledgable of Linux but am not very knowledgable of Windows XP - although I have done a reinstallation of XP a couple of times in the past. I am wondering if the Dell Windows XP reinstallation CD has a repair capability although I'm not sure how I could use it if I can't boot it. I'm also a little puzzled about how this could be a driver or software problem if I can't boot from the original media installation CD. I have not updated the BIOS on this machine.     - Common Language Runtime debugging services I started getting this error message when I tried to use my picture scanner and then the scanner would not work. I am now getting this message every tiem I start my computer. It starts with sprtcmd.exe It states application has generated an exception that cannot be handled. Process id=0x1218(4856), Thread id=0x1464(5220) It instructs me to clidk cancel to debug. Then another mesage comes on saying no debugger found. Regular JIT debugger is not available. code 0x2(2) cordbg.exe !a 0x1218. Does anyone know what this debugger is, why I may have lost mine all of a sudden and how I can get it back?     - Explorer crashed in an unusual way I got the following error message when attempting to transfer files from my laptop to a remote desktop: Runtime Error! Program: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. Of course, I have no idea how to contact the support team. The application did not automatically submit an error report. I searched the list of known issues on the Microsoft site, and I found an article stating that this error can occur when using running your own code created using the Visual C++ 6.0, but it doesn't say anything about Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) crashing.     - DVD/RW Software Question: I recently upgraded my Dell Dimension 8200 with a new LG DVD/RW drive. The main reason I did this was to copy jpg files over to disk and the drive came with software but I'm not sure what does what. After I installed the drive instead of saying DVD/RW it says CD-ROM because it isn't digitally signed.     - Prevent group from installing windows updates - how to. I am wondering how to add a user (an adiminstrator) to a group that does not allow them to update the computer (clicking the little yellow shield in the task bar). The user must have admin privileges to run a few certain installed programs. But I do NOT want to allow them to use the windows update feature. Can this be done?     - Swapped HD, now computer won't boot I have two fairly new HP desktops. I purchased one in early 2006 (call this one Computer A) to replace the one I lost in Hurricane Katrina then purchased another one about one year later (call this one Computer B). It's a long story - - - - Computer A has been in storage for some time, thus, Computer B is up- to-date with the applications, documents, etc., etc. that I use daily. However, Computer A has a built-in reader for the memory cards from digital cameras -- it accepts all formats; Computer B does not. I really want to have the built-in memory card reader in the computer I use daily. Today, I swapped hard drives -- pulled the HD out of Computer B (the one I have been using daily) and stuck it into Computer A (the older one, that's been in storage, with the memory card reader built in), and vice versa. Computer A -- which now has Computer B's HD installed -- booted up, found some new hardware and installed it and is running along like nothing ever happened -- and I now have the built-in card reader. Computer B -- which now has the HD from Computer A -- does not want to boot. When I start it, I get a black-and-white screen asking if I want to start in Safe Mode, a couple of other modes, or if I want to start Windows. It counts down the seconds and starts Windows -- then the black-and-white screen reappears and we go through this loop until I pull the power plug. Turn on the power, and it does the same thing. If I pound on the F1 key while it's booting, I can go to BIOS setup. So, I'm thinking about putting my original WinXP CD in the computer, boot to the CD, wipe out the HD, reinstall WinXP and MS Office, and stick Computer B (which now has a re-formatted HD from Computer A) in storage as a backup. Actually, we only have Windows XP pro in the field and we don't want Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.     - documentviewer I downloaded something called regcure and I think that is my problem, a window keeps popping saying documentviewer the message is "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available" First which disk would i find it on and second I have tried to do a system restore thinking that would fix it and no matter what date i choose it can not be restored, I was not smart enough to click create a restore point with the regcure, would uninstalling this help,,I have windows XP, I would appreciate any help!!!     - clean install of xp pro I need to reformat and partition my drive and install xp I have never done this before so any help will be appreciated all the articles say different things so im a little confused a symantec rep destroyed my drive performing remote assistance due to a problem with the 3.1 microsoft installer (norton360 wouldnt install) first off this is how it was originally partitioned from dell and I dont know if it should be done the same way or how to since I only know how to format the partition im going to install windows on this is what it originally said -:partition 1 [FAT] 55mb c:partition 2 [NTFS] 233601 mb f:partition 3[FAT] 4754mb I dont know what the [fat] is I thought windows should be in a partition that was ntfs and seperate from all my personal files should I partition or not and just use the whole drive and install windows on that and if I do partition if I create a small partition of say 10gb for windows and format it to ntfs it starts to install windows so how do I format the rest of the drive for my data and then how would I get my document onto that drive thank you in advance for any help Tag: PORTABLE HARD DRIVE - READ ONLY Tag: 1860208

You may need to seize ownership of the folders on this disk.
Click Start / Help, then look for help on "Ownership" to see
how it's done.

Hello

To take ownership of a file or folder.

Open Windows Explorer, locate the file or folder you want to take ownership
of.
Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the
Security tab.
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Change owner to box, click the new owner
(Optional) To change the owner of all subcontainers and objects within the
tree, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.

How do you know that it allows read only access to files if you can't write
any in the first place?
