My network adapter has disappeared from my computer. I recently opened my
computer to see how I to add a second hard drive. When I closed it back up
again and turned it back on, my internet connection was not working. I went
to the network connections folder, and my local area network connection was
not there (I have Comcast cable internet). I checked the device manager, but
my network adapter was not listed there. Does anyone know what might have
happened? My connection was working last night,

If your adapter is not built into the motherboard, then it is certainly
possible that
you accidentally moved the adapter. I suggest that you should open the
computer
once again and reseat the adapter.

The adapter is built into the motherboard, that's why this is so weird.

Is the network adapter port directly in the motherboard or does it use
a cable to connect to the motherboard?

If the adapter port is directly on the motherboard, then you might
have turned it off during in the BIOS wel you were adding the second
hard drive settings.

If it uses a cable, open the PC case and check / reconnect this cable.

If the adapter is still not working then the adapter may now be dead
and you will have to consider adding a separate network adapter
(PCI.) At this stage, look at adding a Gigabit adapter which can do
10 - 100 -1000 networks.

I've had several computers right here at home that used to lose the
network card. I had to re-install the drivers. Finially, I got tired of
that and simply put in a new NIC.

True, of you move the NIC to another slot win will re-detect it.
