Hi, ran a virus cleaner and it DAMAGED the XP registry. When I go to click
on a desktop executable or executable icon, windows is asking for the PROGRAM
to run the .exe file! It's confused! Is there a FIX for this? WHAT got
damaged here?
Thank you.

It is important to know wot happened before the scan and how man
viruses to did u detect after scan...If the problem started after th
scan that means there were infected registries that got truncated.Sinc
we donot wot all registries are gone the best possible option I see i
an inplace repair..This would keep all your programs intact but u hav
to update ur pc agai

Get Registry cleaner or the one from iolo system mechanic.

The add-on on iolo (Version 6 and below, ignore 7) has always helped
me reach back on my drive when I couldn't even access it anymore. Bad
advice? Go fuck yourself.

Matt,

These three tools have helped me in most situations where I have a damaged
XP OS:

1) System Restore (not very creative but it's saved me a few times).

2) Using the XP disc that came with your computer (or purchased) run Repair
feature.

3) Try Dial-A-Fix. http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix (This little known
program has helped me twice. BEWARE: This program is not for beginners.
Misusing it can create more OS damage. Read the instructions and know what
files you want Dial-A-Fix to repair before using. Have your XP OS disc on
hand in case Dial-A-Fix prompts you for access to it in case you want to
reinstall certain files. )

See Nepatsfan's post, but in the future, avoid running registry
cleaners. Registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of
the registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone
and don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think,
and what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,
having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

Sorry, I misread your message. You said "virus cleaner," and I somehow
misread it as "registry cleaner."

Ignore my non sequitur of a comment.

No, no.... You misread the post. The OP *already* has a damaged
registry, so he doesn't need to use a registry reamer. He needs a fix, now.

Right! And a "registry cleaner" (cough) doesn't FIX anything. In
fact, more often than not, it's quite the contrary. "A word to the wise is
suffficient".

Probably too late for this piece of wisdom, but iolo automatically
backs up all your registry hives every month or 2 weeks or whatever
you set the interval to. If his registry is damaged, he could've
replaced it with the last valid hive with minimal consequences.

I shut it off when I though it was a waste of diskpace -- then
'couldn't access my account one time and the latest valid registry
backup was 7 months old... before most of the major chances and new
software I installed.

Word of advice: back your shit up, even a welfare recipient can afford
DVDs nowadays.
