    - variation of same .net theme I've read multiple posts but since my issue is slightly different, I'm afraid to assume their fixes will work... It took me an entire day to fix the problem that created this mess!!! Something got corrupted and so I one by one replaced all the .net framework builds going through microsoft update. HOWEVER I missed 1.1 service pack 1 so I have: 1.1 2.0 2.0 SP1 3.0 I am continuing to get a message that I have an update to install (1.1 SP1); however, every time the install fails. I've tried uninstalling from 3.0 backward but I get the following error message when trying to uninstall 3.0: "Setup has detected that a newer verion of the application is already installed on this computer. If this application is encountering problems, use Add or Remove Programs to repair or uninstall the application." I get this message when trying to uninstall from Add/Remove programs!     - Need help with script solution Anyone know of a program that is small that i can use to deploy to my customers workstations and do maintenance cleaning of there pc. For instance when i connect to a customers computer remotely i will run a few programs for defraging, registry cleaning, and disk cleanup. Im looking for a simple program that has all these features that is small in size and that i can run automatically at certain times. Or another solution would be to find out a way to run a script on the users computer when it boots up to run these programs from like a batch file.     - Installed PRO: Stretched images, Wifi gone. Card slot not working I had to replace a hard drive in my Dell E1505. Installed PRO. Several issues: 1. My cursor moves to random areas while typing every couple seconds... usually somewhere earlier in the current sentence Im typing. (It will take forever to type this cuz it moves so often.) 2. Only given 2 options for screen resolution. (800 x 600 and 1024 x 768). I used to have 3 options. Everything including desktop and all web browsers are "stretched" and looks horrible. Pictures are distorted and wide. Text is blurry, etc. 3. My card slot where I put my camera card in doesn't work. 4. Wifi cannot be turned on 5. Device Manager has several yellow exclamation points under "Other devices" which drivers will not update. (Base system devices, ethernet and network controllers, PCI device etc.) I downloaded Dell drivers but not sure how many dozens of drivers or which ones Im supposed to do.     - Hungapp When I sometime try to get to the internet using IE 7.0, my screen freezes..open up half way and I have to use Alt CTrl Del to get out. Background I have a laptop that I want to use at work and at home, sharing a switch. At home I have another PC that I want to be able to share data between it and the laptop. I was hoping that I could simply set up domains with the same name in both locations and with the same password. That way I am hoping that I could take my laptop home without re-booting it and just plug it in to the Ethernet cable at home and away ya go. However, from memory you need to own Windows server to set up a real domain... so could I just set up a Workgroup with the same name and pw and would that work?     - Bluetooth mouse no longer pairing I purchased a new Bluetooth mouse for use w/ my laptop. It was working initially. However, since updating the Bluetooth stack in order to use my Bluetooth headset, I have been unable to re-pair the mouse w/ my laptop. I do not believe that the problem is w/ the software; the headset works as expected, and I was able to verify that a different (borrowed) mouse paired w/ no problems. I am unable to use System Restore to return to my previous configuration, as company policy mandates that this feature be disabled on all systems. When trying to pair the mouse, the system is able to recognize the mouse and will prompt for the passkey (PIN). However, after entering the passkey supplied, I receive the error message: â??Detection of service failedâ??. I am wondering if the mouse is possibly still paired to the previous Bluetooth stack, and will not release that pairing. I have looked for some sort of reset button, but have been unable to locate one.     - Two PCs Started "Freezing Up" I've got two PCs side-by-side and sometime in the last month or so they've both started acting goofy. The main symptom seems tb that they cannot be shut down. Ctl-Alt-Del will not bring up TaskMan, and some applications cannot be close. Windows pops the "Not Responding..." dialog, but telling it to close the app now doesn't do anything. In the end, both PCs have to have the AC power cord pulled for a cold start. When the first one started this, I re-imaged it with a known good system. No luck. I had been thinking that there was some hardware problem on the first PC to start acting up... but the second one started and I had to wonder. Windows auto-updates are tuned on for both PCs.     - How to delete a downloaded but uninstalled update? I have an updated driver for my video card that was downloaded as part of the microsoft update process. After installing the updated driver it conflicted with the latest driver from ATI. I did a system restore and all is well again except when I check for microsoft updates it says the update is downloaded an ready for installation.     - VPN Issue I have a user on the road with a laptop using XP pro and VPN. This particular user has virus protection. For some unknow reason VPN has disappeared completely and she is unable to create a new connection. When she gets to the point to connect to the network at workplace the 2 choices for Create the following connectin: Dial up connectin and Virtual Private Network Connection radio buttons she can not choose either one. It's not a permission thing because I make her login as administrator. In addition if she goes to network connection in the control panel the VPN choice has disappeared too.     - Profiles removed from Windows XP on logoff We just moved from NT 4 to AD (Server 2003). I have a few users that, when they log off, their profiles are removed from the computer. The behavior seems to be linked to moving their accounts from the administrators group locally into the power users group via domain users. Not everyone is affected. In fact, most are not, but I'm not certain about reconfiguring local permissions on the remainder of my workstations because I've lost several profiles from this 'bug'.     - Stand by/Sleep mode My recently built desktop computer will not go into standby/sleep mode. It progresses through the screen saver part, but instead of shutting down it pops back to the active desktop mode and remains there indefinitely. This is a new computer I built a short time back, using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It has two 1 GB DDR2 memory sticks and is running Windows XP Pro SP 2. In general this computer works very well, but I can not get it to go into sleep mode. It has a 500 GB Western Digital hard drive and is no where near the point of being short of disk space or memory. I have opened Display Properties > Screen Saver Tab and set the Screen Saver to; Wait 10 minutes. I have set the Power Options to; Turn off monitor; After 15 minutes, and; Turn off hard drives; After 20 minutes. It seems to be going through this proces and the time intervals seem right but when it gets to the point where it should shut down or go into sleep mode it pops back to the regular desktop view and is fully alive, indefinitely. However I no longer have a sign in button on either site, which help says should be in the top right corner although I do have the Edit my Profile button. I have a .NET Passport.     - Windows Firewall - Turning off I want to turn off Windows Firewall because I have another firewall I want to use. I have a windows 20003 server - domain. Windows XP Pro on workstations. I see that the network connection are firewalled. I went to Security Center and to the Windows firewall settings. I won't give me the option to turn off the firewalled it is greyed out. The new computer came with Micro Trend PC Cillan preloaded - full subscrption. I took all references of that out of the networking and msconfig etc. I am still firellwalled.     - How is quicktime starting? I recently installed quicktime on my xp system. I see that at startup in xp that quicktime is doing it's automatic update thing. It just popped up a dialog. I know how to turn off auto update in quicktime -- that's not the issue. What is bothering me is that I don't see how quicktime is starting up. I have the sysinternals programs autostart and process explorer. I don't see any Apple software in autostart, and there appear to be no quicktime tasks in process explorer.     - CANNOT ACCESS CONTROL PANEL I cannot access the Control Pane, everytime I tried to click on it and the restriction pop up window is: "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system adminstrator". I even logged on as Administrator in safe Mode. I also tried system restore but same problem I'm the only one this computer. This issue also prevents me from adjusting Date/Time on Taskbar and I coudn't click on Add/Remove Program, View System Information under My Computer. One of my co-workers asked me the other day what it is excactly that forces us to reboot a windows box after we change its name or join/disjoin it from a domain.     - Configure TS Automatically for Logged On User XP SP2 We are in the process of converting our users to standard user accounts. We have a number of employees who use terminal services to remotely control their machines. By default, administrators on the local machine have the right to use terminal services, whereas non-administrators must be added to the Remote Desktop Users list. This sets up a situation where people have the ability to use terminal services by virtue of the fact that they are members of the local administrators group. Once they are removed from local administrators group, and if they have not been added to the Remote Desktop Users list, they lose the ability to use terminal services. Of course, an administrator must then login and add the user's account to the Remote Desktop Users list so that he or she can continue to use terminal services after being converted to a standard user account. The obvious solution would be to add the user account to the Remote Desktop Users list BEFORE taking away the user's admin rights. I would like to know if there is some way to automate this work. Is there a script, or a registry hack, that will add the currently logged in user to the Remote Desktop Users list? FYI: We run Active Directory and Novell eDirectory, so we have a number of options for limiting the distribution of any such script or registry hack to only those employees who are authorized to use terminal services.     - Win XP - Windows Easy Transfer - HELP I've bought cable to connect two computers (notebook<-->PC) Easy Transfer Cable for Vista (Laplink). The cable doesn't required any drivers because use a Windows tool "Windows Easy Transfer", which is included in Windows Vista. When I connect the cable to my notebook with Vista PL (Polish), everythink's OK but on my PC with XP PL (Polish) is a problem because XP doesn't have this tool "Windows Easy Transfer" and required is install this tool. I found Windows Easy Transfer on the Microsowt web site but not in Polish language, so I download this with English language. When I try to install this I see this communicate: "setup cannot update your Windows XP files the language installed on your system is diffrent from the update language". And I can't use this cable on XP because XP wants driver for USB Cable Connect. Adn will only work with Windows easy Transfer tool. So what can I do ??? Please help !!!     - Minor icon irritation This is a very minor problem but Im curious why my IE 7 icon is the unknown applicaton icon. Then one at top of start menu. sometimes it shows the EI icon and sometimes it shows the little window icon like it doesn't know what file type it is.     - Area Code Rules II I will try this again with Screenshots, since my first attempt got no proper responses... Seems Windows, by default, forces a 1 before every area code when dialing through Oulook, for example.     - Windows Registry! Ah.. The centralised configuration database.. This heap of data is not present in Mac OS, the way it is in Windows.. It is even there in WOW Vista! Except for the fact that it is a centralised open repositry it has no pros.. But cons comes like hill.. It is very open to any kinda attacks and most of the junks sit up, slowing down the system.. Right from a trojan to spywares starts from registry.. And the more astonishing fact is that, when u install more sw, the more system slows down.. Now i'm asking for alternatives..     - Ole doesn't work with images Hello, quick'n'dirty explanation. I can use OLE to insert any filetype except images. When I try to insert an image as OLE (in Wordpad for example) it just freezes the program so i've to kill it's process. Strange thing is that it's only on the one users account, but creating a new account isn't really an options (since you all know how much pain in the ... that is) any suggestions how I can solve this?     - Moving OS to new drive I have a over partitioned and crowded 40GB HDD. I bought and installed a second hard disk of 160GB. I plan to partition new disk into two: 4 GB page file and the rest data files. My question is how can I transfer the OS to the new disk or a external drive or netword drive? Afterwords I intend to Transfer data files to the new second disk. Re-Format the first disk with single partition. Move the OS and program files to the first disk. 1. The forum is broken and won't take any posts. Obviously not a problem from

2. I can't get anything to play with media player.

I've uninstalled the player and downloaded a fresh copy and installed that.
I've updated Direct X.

The whole system here is totally up to date so I wasn't really expecting
this would help.

I can play files in iTunes and RealPlayer.

It's not an ID3 tag.

Any clues?

OH it's an id10t error in the brain of whoever wrote the installer.

Run this if you have the problem

regsvr32 C:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\quartz.dll
