Aloha all. I don't know if this is really an OS question, so it may be OT,
but I don't know what it is. Maybe someone can help, or at least point me in
the right direction?
I bought a digital picture frame. I wanted to load a bunch of pics onto an
SD card. I used a 1GB SD card, and tried to load about 300MB. At 216 it
stopped and said the card was full. It's not. I then tried a 512MB card.
Same thing! I then tried a 1GB USB Flash Drive. Same thing! I then tried
both a 4GB USB Flash and SD card. Both did the complete load fine.
Why do the 1GB and under state they are full at only 216MB? I even
reformatted the cards several time with no effect. Can anyone help?

Not sure where you got them, but I've heard reports of some cards are
fakes and the label is not what is inside. They say 1 gig but there is
a 256 chip inside.

Then they could be bad too. But I don't think so. I read a report that
says the architecture inside is such that one thing goes it all goes.
Again this is hearsay.

Hello,
Had a similar problem loading MP3 files.
I used this method to check the card.
Created a 490MB single MP3 file, this installed on a 512MB card without
problem.
For some reason the card would only accept a certain number of files.
If your cards or flash drive has some kind of limit, try installing large
files.
If they install then it is a matter of defining the limitation.
After loading the flash drive and cards several times this problem
disappeared.
Hope this is of some help.

take care.

You might be onto something. FAT file systems have a limit of 512
files in the root folder. END!!
Make a folder in root and see if you can copy a ton there.

The OP also needs to read the documentation that came with the frame. It
may state that the thing will only hold X number of photos. I have an older
RCA MP3 player that will only play 199 files no matter what size SD card I
insert into it.

I was focusing on the SD Card comment, and this is a picture frame with
software to cycle through the pictures.

No, that's not the problem. As I said, when I used a 4GB SD card, all the
files loaded fine and played fine (both music and pics).
The frame will not open or play pics located in sub-directories. They all
have to be in the root.
Thanks for the feedback.

Ah ha! Problem solved. I had to reformat the card into FAT32, with 4096
block size. Now I can fill the card to its limit.

What was it formatted to?

FAT32 can be incompatible with some devices.

I have a flash player that has the same annoyance, but won't work with fat32

If you use long file names with FAT12 or 16, (can't recall which, you can
google this to find the limit), this will reduce the number of files that
the directory can hold.

Usually all you need to do is create a directoy and put files in that until
the next limit is reached. Then repeat the process.

Presumably FAT16. That file system has a limit of 512 entries in the
root directory. That's one of the things that FAT32 improved.
