file deletion
Is there anyway to retrieve a file that was replaced by an older (date) one?
Is there perhaps a temp folder that might have it cached? It was a excel file
that user did copy/paste and "replace all". This was not done within the
last few minutes/hours so I can not use undo in excel.

unable to open new file
I've got a new Dell desktop (2.33GHz, 2gig RAM) just last month and it works
fine. Other than occasionally I cannot open a new file/webpage/folder etc...
eg. When I am using IE7 to surf, and I wanna open a new tab, it doesn't open
up. At this time I can't even open anything new such as a window or another
exe application..
However the problem is fixed when ie. I close a tab on IE and then I can
open ie. a new folder. The problem compounds itself with me being able to do
less and less without first closing something, be it a tab on IE, or a
window, or an application.
Any ideas ? Is it to do with the memory allocation ?

hangs / freezes
I am working on a Dell OptiPlex GX280 that up till last week worked fine (~3
years). 1GB RAM, 2.8GB Pentium, 80GB HDD SATA, CD-RW, XP SP2. Is a network
workstation. Virus & malware signatures updates hourly. Has decent
firewall. Recently had added second 512MB RAM strip, but ran with no issues
for weeks following. Run MS Updates routinely, but not yet loaded XP SP3 (it
was not yet released at time hang/freeze issue began). Has suddenly begun to
hang/freeze at about 2-3 minutes post log-in. Gives no warning, no error
messages, no error beeps, continues all green lights on back panel.
Initially reset to earlier restore point with no positive effect. Then did
repair of OS with no positive effect. Ran Dell Diagnostics which found no
hardware issues - all tests passed. Specifically retested Memory and HDD and
all still passed those further diagnostics. Have tested USB keyboard and USB
mouse separately and both are fully functional. Ultimately reformatted HDD
and did clean install, but still continues to hang/freeze at about 2-3
minutes post log-in. Can boot to CD and during lengthy OS repair or install
there was no hang. Can boot to Safe Mode and device will eventually
hang/freeze at about 10-12 minutes post log-in. When hang begins, red light
on optical mouse flickers (slow at first then increases to rapid, then
suddenly stops); also during this, audio begins to crackle and similarly
increases in pace, then stops same as mouse optic light. Did find some info
@ MS regarding an "interrupt storm" but the prescribed "fix" for that did not
alter my issue in any way. Presently the GX280 still hangs/freezes and
nothing I've done has resolved the issue.
Has anyone suffered through this type of problem before, and how did you
ultimately resolve it? Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900957

browseUI.dll
Hi,
I've reinstalled WinXP with SP2 on my notebook and I can log-in using my
username and password. However then it goes to the desktop screen with
nothing on it. Not even the taskbar at the bottom or any icons at all.
There is a pop-up saying that the file browseUI.dll is missing.
I cannot do anything other than open the DOS command page using SHift+F10
key to search my hdd.
Where can I find this browseUI.dll file and where do I copy it over to ?

Card Slot
Hi,
I am running Windows XP on my laptop, and I have a couple of cards that I
use for internet. One is a Motorola wireless adapter (because the computer
does not have built in wireless), and the other is a Verizon Air Card (for
mobile internet). The problem I'm having is that I have to keep reinstalling
these cards (using the driver discs) almost every time I switch from one to
the other. I never had this problem before. I just wiped out and reloaded
(with the stock restore disc), and it has not helped. I have also had
problems with a GPS device that plugs into the USB. I've had to reinstall
this a couple times too. The details are below:
Computer: Panasonic Toughbook CF-51
Wireless Adapter: Motorola WN825G
Verizon Air Card: Qualcomm PC5750
If more information is needed to answer this question, please let me know
and I'll get it ASAP. I don't know the type of card slot this is, but I know
it's the wider one, not the newer, skinnier slot.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

Wireless problem after installing SP3
Hi
After installing SP3 onto an Acer Aspire 1360 (XP Home SP2) it will no
longer connect to my wireless network. It simply sits there trying to
acquire an IP address but doesn't succeed. It also says the signal
strength is low where it is usually excellent and is trying to connect at
1Mbps. Trying to find networks in range results in the claim there are no
networks in range. Uninstalling SP3 restores normality. The wireless
router is a Belkin with hardware version F5D7231-4 2000. Any ideas?

System Slowing Down. Any Suggestions.
Windows XP, SP2. I have a system that has been running fine for a few years.
It has a 3 GHz processor and 4 GB of memory. Recently everything is running
much slower. Programs open up very slowly, some Excel workbooks with macros
run interminably long. Internet browsing is slow.
The LAN is fine, as I can go to another system and it runs the same
processes and browses the net quickly. I have scanned for spyware and
viruses and removed spyware and found no viruses. What can cause a system to
bog down like this? Any suggestions on how I can restore the system to its
former vigor? Thanks for the help.

Persistent "extra linebreak" problem with Live Mail / Hotmail
Why isn't there a newsgroup for Live Mail / Hotmail? Anyhow...
I'm getting annoying by the extra linebreaks Live keeps inserting in my
emails. No matter how careful I am about it, and how good an email looks on
my end before sending, it always has that annoying "blank line for every
time you hit enter" problem when I go to my sent folder and look at what I
sent.
It's like it's interpreting all BR tags as P tags. Know what I mean?
I even tried emailing from Outlook (which I've configured to sync with my
Hotmail account) and it does the same thing, except that when I look at my
sent folder in Outlook, the email looks fine. When I look at the very same
email sent with Outlook, but in IE instead, the extra linebreaks are there
again.
...the hell?
How do I fix this bug?

Re: About Registry Cleaners
Hi,
Doesn't WinXP have a built in "SCANREG" as does Windows 98SE?
On a Win98 computer, I have often used the command (in Dos mode),
"SCANREG /FIX /OPT" . Only recently, I bought a WinXP laptop, but I didn't
search for a SCANREG or it's equivalent yet.

Why two different types of app errors?
We have an application that is occasionally crashing in random places.
Some users get the typical fatal error:
"xxxxxxxx" has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience.
But one of our users always gets something like this:
The instruction at "0x003de054" referenced memory at "0x00300034". The
memory could not be "written".
Any thoughts about why one user would get one whereas someone else would
get the other? Are there memory conditions or PC configuration issues
that would produce one error rather than the other? Thanks. Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900884

SP3 direct download link needed
Tried DLing SP3 yesterday and found the file size too small, about 230
meg. used this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en
What's happening is, MS is DLing SP3 to the Internet directory (which is
a small partition with little free space) instead of to a TMP or TEMP
directory which point to large partitions with loads of free space!
Two questions:
1) does anyone have a direct link to MS DL site for the latest SP3
release (I'll use a DLer program which saves exactly where I want them)?
2) outside of changing the temporary Internet directory location, is
there any way to circumvent MS from using that directory as its temp
location?

Vista question about "compatibility mode" and "safe mode".
Sorry for posting a Vista question in the XP section, but I just dont know
where is the vista newsgroup or if it exists.
Anyway, my problem is im trying to run a program which can only run under
two conditions:
1) Can only run under windows XP.
2) Needs to run in safe mode to work correctly.
The first problem I can solve it by simply runing the program under
compatibility mode (so it thinks its running under XP SP2). but the problem
is that in Safe Mode I can't use change the compatibility mode because the
option is greyed out.
So my question is, is there any other way to use compatibility mode while in
Safe mode? like from the command line?
Many thanks in advance.

Downloading stops for no reason ...
Downloading used to be an easy job. However, it's getting more and
more difficult.
Used to be that whenever I download stuffs, where-ever I downloaded it
from, downloading itself poses no problem. I could even download an
entire CD-ROM ISO content, over 700MB in size, in one shot.
Then things started to degrade.
First, it was the download from file-sharing services such as
MegaUpload or RapidShare that gave me problems. The download just
stops in the middle for no apparent reason.
At first I thought it was the ADSL modem or port problem. It wasn't.
Then I thought it was the ISP throttling bandwidth. It wasn't either.
At the time, downloading from plain-old HTTP or FTP sites were still
okay. Only file sharing services such as RapidShare or MegaUpload that
gave me headaches.
Then, this thing turns uglier.
Downloading from regular FTP sites, or even downloading a PDF file as
small as 4MB would just stop in the middle.
So I thought, hey, it must be the browser.
Changed my browser, the problem persisted.
Change browser again, hey, the same.
At that time, web pages are still okay, even webpages with lots and
lots of pictures open fine.
Now, things has gone from bad to worse.
No matter which browser I use (Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, Safari,
Opera), sometimes the webpage would just load half-way.
Click on the "reload" page, the page reloads from scratch ... and
stops at half way.
Webpages with lots of pictures fair the worst. Pictures loads
halfways, some even didn't load. There are all sorts of things that I
just can't explain anymore.
So now, to all of you with so much experiences ----
What the heck is wrong with my computer ????
I am connecting to the Net via ADSL. Aztech modem.
PC is Pentium Duo-Core based. OS is XP Home. 4GB of RAM. 250 GB of
Hard Disk.
I have scanned my PC with anti-virus softwares up and down, no virus.
I have also check the firewall settings. Nothing wrong.
Trojans? I dunno. But so far, Norton isn't telling me anything.
So to all with so much wonderful experience ---- is there _ANY_
possibility that some settings in my PC has been changed somehow, in
causing the downloading problem???
BTW, check the line also. No stoppage, no signal drop. Everything
normal.
Can anyone please tell me what is wrong with my PC ????
Please, I need your help.

Basic security
Hi group
I dont have xp rigth now, so this message can have some inexact information,
but I believe here its enough to understand.
I rigth clicked one folder inside MyDocuments, and then I established this
folder as private, meaning that other users of the same computer cant see
file content of any
file inside this folder. Then I placed the hard disk on another computer, to
verify that file content cant be accessed, and verified all ok, files cannot
be read.
The folder was not encripted, because it have exe files wich Im affraid,
could be damaged, I dont know if such damage by using encription, is
possible.
Do you think the folder content is really innaccesible?. I recall the aspect
that I dont want to encript by the presence of .exe files.
Of course, resuming I say: Is a folder made private, secure if other persons
take your hard disk?, at least under usual attacks, DOS access, Safe Mode
Access, etc.
Of course, all would be decided if I can encript the folder.
Thanks very much in advance, Carlos. Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900721

Font problem - maybe a virus issue?
Hello,
I've had a few problems with my PC lately, mainly on shutting down I was
getting a message box saying that a program was having a problem (can't
remember exact words) and asking if I wanted to stop it from running. The
application that was mostly doing this was "gcasDtServ.exe" (sometimes it was
"GoogleDesktop.e")which I've found to be part of Microsoft AntiSpyware. I
also had a file with a similar name which was "GCASDTSERV.EXE-04B13CAF.pf"
which could be a related file.
I read that sometimes this gcas file has been hijacked and used for virus
type activity so I did a full virus scan using my McAfee software and also
the Microsoft OneCare product. Both came up OK, no virus.
I was thinking about deleitng the .pf file mentioned above, but next time I
went to look for it it was gone. My shut-down problem seems to have been
fixed for the moment, but now I'm having an odd problem with my fonts in
Outlook and Word. When I use Arial it will only appear in Bold. I have not
selected bold and I can't get rid of it. When I checked Format/Font I noticed
that the dialogue box doesn't have an option for "Regular" under "Font
Style". It seems to be the only font that does not have this option. What has
happened to it? How can I get it back?
I checked in the WINDOWS/Fonts folder to see if there was a font in there
called Arial, and there is, it's called "arial.ttf".
Does anyone now how I can fix this, and does this sound virus related?
Thanks,

Windows crashes...
My sister has a four-year-old Dell 2400 with WinXP. A few days ago, when she
booted up, Windows began to load, then the screen went black and her mouse
and keyboard went out. The power light on the tower was still on. The same
thing happened after several attempts to boot.
When I went around to look at it, I booted into safe mode and began to do a
system restore. Right in the middle of the restore the screen went blank.
I opened the case and made sure all cables were firmly seated. Grasping at
straws I booted to the CMOS setup and looked at the event viewer. It only
mentioned something about a keyboard malfunction.

Keyless installation of XP SP3
I think most of you are aware that XP SP3 has a new feature that permits you
to install XP without entering a product key. Doing so gives you a 30-day
grace period before being required to enter the pk. Activation requires
entry of the product key at the time of activation if it has not been
previously entered. In effect, this makes your XP SP3 cd a trial copy.
To do a keyless installation, when you install XP and reach the screen where

To take advantage of this you must be using an XP SP3 integrated cd so you
will need to slipstream XP SP2 and the download from
https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en
I use nLite for the slipstreaming.
You must do this on an XP x86 machine. Do NOT use Vista.
I have not had occasion to use the rearm command in XP SP3 but it may work
as it does in Vista with a keyless install. The rearm command gives you an
additional 30-day grace period and may be used up to three times. The
command is "slmgr -rearm".
Why you would install keyless is up to you but I use it for experiments in
virtual machines that I only run for a day or two. Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900704
master volume control
The master volume control in the tray sometimes "mutes" itself. How do I stop
this from happening? Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900688
Slipstreaming SP3 using HD based ISO
I still have the ISO image on hard drive from when I slipstreamed
SP2 with XP Pro gold to produce a bootable XP SP2 CD. I'm
wondering if I could use that HD based ISO image to merge with
SP3, using Autostreamer, to produce an XP SP3 ISO image.
It will be interesting to see if SP3 will be available free on CD.
MS has done that twice in 2004. In Feb 2004 they released a
Security Update CD that included SP1A and all subsequent
updates. That CD was widely distributed and available free
by mail, and at the checkouts at BestBuy, Staples, etc. It was
released to address a security concern. Then in the fall of
2004 the SP2 update CD was available free by mail.

Security Center
XP-SP2 - I removed a couple of programs and then cleaned their entries from
the registry. After that, Security Center doesn't recognize Zone Alarm and
AVG Free 8.0, which it did before. It does recognize Windows Firewall.
Perhaps I mistakenly deleted the wrong registry key. If so, is there a fix
for that? Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900683
Sound Icon Missing
Hi:
In the past, there was Sound Icon sitting at the right bottom of System
Tray, but recently it's gone.
Sound-Icon is quite a handy because there is a handy feature, from 'mute' to
'loud' by just one click.
How to restore/rescue Sound Icon at the right bottom of System Tray?
Thanks for your help in advance. Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900674
Multiple references to the same footnote
How do we put multiple references in the body of the text to the same
footnote? For example, three superscript number "3" 's in different
paragraphs that all refer to the same footnote. We also want all three
footnote references in the body to be re-numbered (updated) if another
footnote is inserted before the third footnote. Can this be done? Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900658
svchost.exe-again
I've read through most of the fixes already posted, but I am not a techno-gek
and need step-by-steps.... The problem started today, after 2 problem-free
years, suddenly on of the svchost.exe applications is hogging 99% of my CPU
and it will not stop. If you can help me in plain english, I'd really,
really, appreciate it. Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900650
Uninstaller
I tried removing one of my older program softwares which came with Canon
printer's optional software.
But the unstaller file seems corrupted (Uninst.isu) and prevents
uninstallation.
I just want more space for my hard drive and this software (5MB) not required
for me now.
Is this wise removing or delete a folder (PhotoStitch) and its contents
manually? Tag: Help & support Tag: 1900638
When I try to open up "Help & Support" nothing happens. Any ideas.
