Strange Monitor Problem
I just finished setting up and installing programs in a new PC running
windows XP.
Something must have happened and the monitor screen went black. If I
try to hit "reset" I can nothing seems to happen. I think the computer
shuts down and restarts but the screen remains black
The only way I can get the monitor to work (if it is the monitor) is
to unplug the PC (when the screen is blank) and plug it back in. Once
I have a screen and shut down normally using the start menu, the next
time I try to start it up I get nothing but a black screen. I can't
even tell if the PC is booting up or getting past the cmos boot up as
the screen is black. I have tried a different monitor and the same
thing happens so i know it's not the monitor. I'm lost as to where to
go at this pint. Has anyone run into a problem like this/ Any ideas
what could cause this to happen? A driver or something?
Please help
Thanks

swapping hard drives ?
I have two dells both with XP.. They are not the same model.
The older one has been having freeze up issues and probably just needs a
operation reinstall.
My new system came with XP. I loaded all of my programs.. and after a
couple of months I added a second drive where I put Vista. After a short
time I unplugged the XP drive and there it sat.
First of all... the problem pc is my wifes..
What would happen if I put my old XP drive in hers... (please no jokes)
moved all of her data and setting over and then took out her original drive.
My drive has all the programs she would need.
The programs on the new drive. Will they run ?
And any other problems to consider ?
Thanks

icon change for files
I know how to change the icons for Folders, but I am not sure how to do this
for files, since the menu tabs that appear when I right click on the file and
select 'Properties' is different than when I do the same on a Folder.
Is there a way that this is possible -- for me to change the icon for
specific files such as a .txt file, or a word .docx file, etc. ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

How to block installation of Supplemental Language Support?
I found that Supplemental Language Support (files for complex script and
right-to-left languages, and files for East Asian languages) and Input
Method Editors (IME) were causing problems on one laptop here, so I
uninstalled them via Control Panel: Regional and Language Options:
Languages: clear the check-boxes for those two options.
But today I found that the laptop was having problems again, and I found
that the Supplemental Language Support had been reinstalled!
I don't know how that happened, but how can I block/prevent a future
reinstallation?

Some USB Storage Devices Don't Work - But Some Do
My current challenge is a new Maxtor Onetouch 4 external hard drive. Windows
detects it as an "other device" and gives error code 28 asking for a driver.
It never shows up as a hard drive. The Maxtor is plug and play and should
not need a driver. The Maxtor works fine when plugged into another computer,
so I know the drive and USB cable are okay. I also tried three different USB
ports that work fine with other items (like my printer) plugged into them, so
the ports are okay.
I am running XP home edition, with Service Pack 3 installed.
This issue seems to be part of a pattern that has emerged in the last 6-12
months. Windows recognizes one Ipod but not another. Likewise, it
recognizes one thumb drive but not another.
Microsoft Help and Support has Article ID # 925196 that describes my problem
pretty closely. That article advises to delete an upper filters value and a
lower filters value from specific Registry Keys. I found the keys but
neither an upper nor a lower value showed up.
I hope this description gives enough symptoms for someone to recognize the
actual problem and point me in the right direction. I have been searching
Microsoft's and other user groups for many hours over several days without
finding a solution.
Thanks for any ideas.

XP won't start, can't access Safe Mode
Due to my own negligence, I think, I requested a download of XP, SP3 at the
same time I asked for an update to the Microsoft software update program.
Somewhere during the install process (I had walked away), my Dell E1505
Laptop crashed. I found a message that a â??problem has been detected, Windows
has shut down and I should restart in Safe Modeâ?? to clean out the programs
I just added. After this restart failed from the message page, I tried to
restart using the F8 command, selecting Safe Mode, XP Media Center OS. The
response is a list of about 30 file paths like
â??multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)â?¦etcâ??. After about 30 seconds, the screen
changes to the original notice that a problem has been detected and to
restart in Safe Mode. At the bottom of the page is more data, like â??stop
0X00000007E (â?¦.). I tried restarting several times. Once selecting the
option â??pick last known good configuration. Same circle of pages begins.
So, does anyone know if I can fix this problem? I donâ??t know if I have the
DELL PC restore partition on my laptop. I understand I could clean the hard
disk and reinstall the initial key software if it is there. How can I find
out? Can I bring up Safe Mode in another way? Might I use the startup disk
that came with the computer? Might I have to erase my hard disk and start
again or just take out the recently offending software?? If so, is there an
instruction as to how to do this?
Sorry for the long explanation. In 15 years of computer use, this is the
first time I have run into a wall like this. Fortunately, I did back up my
data before performing the update. Tag: Finding eSATA port number? Tag: 1923334

ListView: how to detect if the item is selected with the first mouse click?
Hello,
When the item is selected I need to enable cmdDelete btn.
and if there is not item selected cmdDelete btn must be disabled.
The problem with the code I use (see below) is that when user change the
selected item (or when user select item for the first time) the code below
does not "see" selected item with the first mouse click.
Private Sub lvSelLines_MouseDown(Button As Integer, Shift As Integer, x As
Single, y As Single)
For i = lvSelLines.ListItems.Count To 1 Step -1
If lvSelLines.ListItems(i).Selected = True Then
cmdDelete.Enabled = True
Exit Sub
End If
Next
cmdDelete.Enabled = False
End Sub
How to correct that?

XP locks up at splash screen
Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I've only just joined
this group. I have a problem on two different PCs running XP home with
the latest patches and updates, but with quite different specifications
and different software in daily use, by and large. On boot-up, XP runs
as far as the splash screen. The progress indicator runs for a while and
then XP locks up. The only thing that will clear it is turning off the
power and re-starting. The machines then show the page offering to start
from safe mode etc. - if I select start in normal mode, the machine
takes the last good configuration and starts just fine. I've done this
countless times, and
it always follows the same sequence.
I read quite a few discussions on the net about this, so I know it's a
common problem, but without a common solution. The first suggestions
were that it was a driver problem, so I disabled the splash screen to
see if it locked at the same driver each time, but this was not the
case, they all loaded just fine and then the machine stopped - the
message on screen just showed the Windows version - not an error
message. I updated all the drivers I could find anyway - to no avail.
The two machines had different graphics cards, hard drives etc. so there
were not many drivers in common anyway.
Since it loaded OK from the last configuration on the *second* time of
asking it seemed reasonable therefore to assume that something was
happening on shut-down which was blocking the first load, but cleared by
the reboot. I found a conversation which blamed the problem on some
program/s keeping a handle on the Windows Users section of the registry
on shut-down. I'm not very technical, but this sounded good. I installed
a prorgram from Microsoft which purported to prevent the problem by
forcing all programs to release their "grip" on the registry before
close-down - UPHclean-setup.msi . This seemed to work for a while, but
the behaviour returned. Logic would suggest that the problem was related
to the previous shut-down. My guess (and it is only a guess) was that a
Windows update altered things. Indeed, my guess was that a Service Pack
or update started the problem in the first place, as it started just
after one, but then as there are so many updates anyway, it's almost
bound to start just after one.
Anyone any ideas as to where to go from here? The longer it goes on the
more annoying it gets.
Regards,
Bob

amounting to approx 380MB's on to it from my Computer (XP) and when it was
just about finished this message popped up- "Cannot copy DSC327: The

The photo that was not copied just happened to be the last photo of the 340.
The rest were copyed just fine.
I tried to copy again several times different photos on to the same memory
stick with the 239 pics on it from another folder and got the same error
message.
One last attempt I tried to download the same photos onto a 2GB Memory stick
and got the same message. I just cannot download any more pictures on either
of the Memory sticks. They cannot be full? Does anyone have any suggestion
that might help me?

Automatic Updates
I had my Automatic Updates set to "Download updates, but let me decide when
to install" and sometime today, an update came in. Since I was away from
the computer, the update shield is now missing from the taskbar and when I
choose "Turn off computer" it shows that it will install the downloaded
updates when the system is turned off. Since I believe that this update is
SP3 and I choose not to install it at this time, how can I tell Windows to
skip this install, or how can I get the shield back in the taskbar so I can
choose to not install it? It used to leave the shield in the taskbar until
I made a choice, but now it appears to no longer do that. I know that I can
chose the option to not install the update on shutdown, but when I bring
the system back up, that install update choice is there again. I just
don't want SP3 getting installed by mistake, since I'm not ready to do the
install and I'm not sure at this time I even want to.

No Windows sounds but do have WMP sounds
I'm so confused. I've just finished rebuilding an old Gateway PC. This
morning I had Windows sounds (the logon ta-da and other beeps and
boops) but audio CD's wouldn't make any sound. Playing wav files
through WMP did not do anything. I then updated the audio drivers
downloaded from Gateway for this PC. Now I can play any media through
WMP, but the Windows sounds do not work. When I go into Control Panel
| Sound and Audio Devices Properties, Volume tab, it says "No Audio
Device". When I go to the Sounds tab and try playing any of the sounds
such as Asterisk, I get the error message:
Windows cannot play the sound %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Error.wav
When I go into Device Manager, there was a question mark next to
Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver. I couldn't find
anything about it on the Gateway driver list. Searching Google came up
a suggestion to delete this driver and reboot. If it wasn't
automatically found, then to scan for hardware changes. It wasn't
found.
Any suggestions on how to get Windows to beep at me.

Limited User Account has too much access to computer
Hello to anyone with the knowledge!
I'm using XP Home Svc pack 2. My first problem is that I would like the
access of more folders to be restricted to limited user accounts on my
computer. I don't understand why in the sharing tab (under properties) of
some folders I can check "make this folder private" and in other folders,
this is not checkable or uncheckable. I would think that any folder on the
Administrator's account should be denied access to a Limited account, not
just the Administrator's My Docs folder.
My second problem and the reason why I'm here is that I have an external
hard drive connected by USB. I can go into the Guest user account, and have
total access to that external hard drive. Is there a way for the
Administrator to block access to this or any other connected device that
shows up in My Computer? If not, then why not? This seems to be a very basic
and important feature of having multiple user accounts on one shared machine.
I do not want to encrypt the contents of my external hard drive, nor do I
want to unplug the drive and lock it up somewhere every time I leave the
computer.
Thank you for your time.

XP mess
Hi gurus
I have the following problems and I really hope that you gurus can help.
I was installing a new video card when suddenly the blue screen of D came
up, I put the original video card back and tried to restart the computer but
always the blue screen came up, I asked for help and this was done.
XP cd->repair->chkdsk /r->fixboot c:, this allowed me to boot the computer
all the way up and as you can imaging I was really happy, I could see all my
files and everything else( I know I promise backup will be done daily). well
while everything looked fine I start to have the following problems
1) I can not copy within my computer or outside.-> I right the mouse, click
on copy and then go to the folder or drive I want to paste and the paste
option is not present, if I drag and drop nothing happens.
2) Start->program->accessories->system tools->backup... this does not work,
nothing happens, nada comes up.
3) there are a bunch of service that dont start nor manually or automatically.
4) Does this by any changes has to do with Registry and if so, can I get one
of those registry fixer software to fix this.
It seems like everything is a mess and I dont know where to start looking.-
here is where you gurus comes in.
This is quiet a challange as it seems like the frea... machine has live on
its own.

data on it via that program, however- I just want to "send to" the photo -or
whatever -straight to the CD without going through Roxio.
Any ideas? Know this is prob.a no brainer for most of you but I'm no puter
expert by a long shot.

Turn Off PC Balloons?
When I shutdown my PC, a balloon popup now appears telling me what each
option means (Turn off, Restart, StandBy). This didn't appear before.
How do I disable these balloons? Tag: Finding eSATA port number? Tag: 1923151

Failing to save settings
I am using Windows XP Home Edition. Recently, I do not seem to be able to
save my settings anymore. I have noticed that in several areas:
- Folder view settings: I can't apply permanent view settings to folders
anymore, the view changes back to the (wrong) default for whatever it had
been before. I can't specifiy the folder type anymore
(music/pictures/documents...) and can't choose a picture to display on the
thumbnail version either.
- Favourites: In my favourites menu, I can't sort the favourite by names
anymore, parts of them get collapsed, and if I drag and drop a folder to
another location, this step has been reverted when I check back.
- Desktop icons: I can't rearrange my desktop icons anymore, it always goes
back to the previous view as well.
- Internet security settings: If I select "permanently allow pop-ups from
this site", it will prompt me again the next time I try to open a pop-up (it
took me a while to get this question window to open).
I have noticed an error message, something like: "Failing to store in
registry", which came up a few times when I was downloading and saving
documents or pictures to my hard drive or external hard drive.
Somehow none of my settings are stored. How can I fix this?
Help is much appreciated. Tag: Finding eSATA port number? Tag: 1923135
Flash Player
I've not been able to download and install Flash Player. It downloads ok
and starts the install then I get a message that the "Install Failed." I go
to their website and follow troubleshooting, etc. and it still won't
install.
They suggest reloading Internet Explorer (I have 7). Did that and still
wouldn't install.
Any suggestions?
ps. I haven't changed a thing to cause this that I know of. It tries to use
Flash Player on YouTube and now it won't work.
Thanks for any help.

How can I stop it?
Thank you
