Hard Drive activity
Is it normal for the hard drive to be constantly active? While looking at a
web page, without clicking any links, I notice that the hard drive light is
continually flashing. I also noticed that the CPU usage went as high as 50%
when I was simply viewing a web page. What might be the cause of this? I ran
a virus scan with NOD 32 and it came up empty. Tag: Error constantly showing on start up Tag: 1934679
windows will not boot, and now will not install
Ok bear with me as I try to explain this.
-There was a power outage in my area and my computer restarted. After
restarting it would hang at the Windows loading screen with the blue bar, and
it would stay like that forever.
-I went into safe mode which works fine and tried a system restore to an
earlier date, and still wouldn't load.
-Went back into safe mode and it said Restoration Complete. Ran msconfig to
do a diagnostic boot...still no luck.
-Ran chkdsk /r using Recovery Console, said it fixed the errors but still
hangs at the same screen. Ran Samsung HD utility and detected ECC errors.
-Tried to do a Repair Windows installation using an original Windows cd, so
it was SP1 when I had SP2. I tried a Windows XP Pro SP2 cd but there was no
repair option so I went to my original, which was Home.
-Through the install there was a few errors such as COM+, directdb.dll,
inetcomm.dll,msoe.dll and wab32.dll. I clicked okay with all of them and
installation completed fine.
-After restarting, loading would be REALLY slow, and actually wouldn't go
past the wallpaper. I checked task manager and explorer.exe isn't even there.
-Went into safe mode, which was super slow as well, and same thing with the
no icons. Ran safe mode with Command prompt and opened system restore, only
to find no restore points.
-Got my hands on a Sp3 Windows Home cd, and got it to the Installing files
screen where it shows a Do you wish to install this non verified SoundMAX HD
audio driver, and it freezes. It said this when I first did the Repair
install but I could get past it, this time my mouse/keyboard freezes up.
I am now at a loss as to what I should do other than formatting.
Any help guys?

Windows Messenger link under IE 6
Hi there,
Does anyone know that why there is a sudden Windows Messenger link in my
Internet Explorer 6 Tools menu.
I have not installed Windows Messenger in that machine. Does it related to
Windows XP SP3 or hotfix?
And how to hide this?
Please advise?

good backup/imaging software?
Looking to do a one-time hard-drive image for back-up. Not something that
continually monitors changes, but something I can run whenever I feel the
need to perform a backup to save to a DVD and load in the event of a system
crash. Preferably free (if anything is available).
I've bought a computer with three recovery CDs I can use to restore the
computer to the state in which I bought it, but I have made so many changes
since then, I would like to make a new recovery disc (DVD preferably). The
CDs I have load Norton Ghost in a DOS environment. From there, I can choose
to load from image to disc (I think is the option). Can I use this same app
to backup and create a new and more current image? Thanks in advance for any
help in this (I know very little about backup and recovery software). Tag: Error constantly showing on start up Tag: 1934659
burning files on cd question.
http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/1500/1500_firmware.htm
The above site gives information on how to burn a file on a cd.
It says(in the middle of the page)
"Burn U1500AM.ROM to a blank CD-R/CD-RW.
Be sure to apply these specifications before burning the disc:
Data CD, ISO9660, Mode 1, "Close"/"Finalize" disc session. "
How do you apply the specifications: "Data CD, ISO9660, Mode 1,
"Close"/"Finalize" disc session" to the cd when I burn files on it???
The article also says the cd file must be exactly 524,288 bytes.
I burned the file without the specifications and it was only 421,888
bytes. Is it because the specifications were not applied?
How do I apply the specifications?
Thank you in advance. Tag: Error constantly showing on start up Tag: 1934642
Fragmentation of large video file
OS=Windows XP Pro SP2
I downloaded a 1 hour video, file dn008.0318.mp4 from democracynow.com
using the video player Miro.exe.
The 451,294 KB, file had 6,264 fragments. When I use this process I
typically get this degree of high fragmentation.
Q1 - Is such high fragmentation to be expected with video files? Or
does this indicate that I have a problem?
Windows defrag couldn't defrag it (or several other video files.)
Piniform defraggler showed 3 fragments after Defragging it.
Information will be appreciated,

Microsoft Optional Hardware (Optional) Update
Recently, I selected the update, "SIS-Display-SIS 741", from the subject
site and restarted my computer, running WindowsXP Home. At the end of the
reboot, a pop-up titled "keyhook.exe - Entry Point Not Found". The enclosed
text read: RealKeySting@CSISReg@SAHPAD0H0PAUHKEY__@@K@Z could not be
located in the dynamic link library SISBase.dll. Microsoft's Download
History indicated the update completed, I found "SIS-Display-SIS 741 in the
Device Manager and diabled it. The pop-up error message repeated for
several reboots. Finally, I enabled, SIS-Display-SIS 741. A search
indicated Keyhook.exe" was located at C:\WINDOWS\system32. It was not
readily available during a physical check, which is a little confusing. The
only other thing I can think of is to see if I can get, keyhook.exe, off the
internet and install it. However I'm not familiar with whether I can get it
or where to put it. I could use a lot of help on this, please. Tag: Error constantly showing on start up Tag: 1934635

Manually Removing Certain Registry Key Types
What are the possible consequences of manually removing the following type
of registry key:
hkey_local_machine \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internet
settings\zonemap\domains\ (website)
If my understanding is correct, the values of this key will set the
security/privacy settings of the IE browser for the specified website. For
the case of malware, the malware would create this key and set the security
level to "Trusted" for the website. It would then direct the browser to the
website and run more malicious code from that site.
Using REGEDIT, I looked to see how many keys I had of this type and found a
huge amount. I estimate about 500. None of the websites are those that I
visit regularly, or maybe never visited at all. A lot of them seem to have
foreign domains. I want to get rid of them. It seems like the registry saves
everything.
There is also the potential embarrassment factor. A worst case scenario is
that a computer savy girlfriend inspects my registry and demands to know why
I have a key from moscowwhores.com. I don't remember ever visiting this site
and it's not really the way I roll.
These keys have two parameters: REG_SZ (value not set) and REG_DWORD =
0x00000004 (4)
Can anyone tell me what these values mean?
What could go wrong if I engage in mass deletement of these type of keys.
Thanks

can't transfer animation file to website files
I have a webpage that was created for me that contains animation. I want to
transfer this webpage to my website files on the internet.
I have this file stored on my computer in the MY Documents section.
Everytime I open this file on my computer the animation is blocked and I
have to right click the script and active x warning bar that pops up and
click allow.
I need to transfer this file to my website files, but when I do, the
animation does not come with it.
How can I stop internet explorer from blocking the animation so that I can
transfer the COMPLETE file to my website files?
The animation company made the program on a MAC if that will help you.
My OS is WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION
My browser is now Internet Explorer 6 because I uninstalled Internet
Explorer 7 thinking that would help, but it didn't.
I need this done now, but none of ther help sections show how to do it.
So what do I do? Completely shut down all security just to transfer that
one file? And if so ...how do I do it?
I have tried using FTP, but the same thing happens. The words transfer, but
not any of the animation, yet if functions perfectly on my PC (as long as I
right click that stupid allow active content bar.

Sound card not visible after OS Re-Instalation.
Greetings,
Due to miscellaneous problems, I just reformated my hard drive and
re-installed the OS from disks.
Unfortunately, in spite of the fact that the BIOS indicates that sound
functionality is enabled, the hardware menu under the system folder does not
show the sound hardware and or drivers.
Perhaps the built-in sound card has gone bad? Or is anyone else aware of any
BIOS/OS parameter and/or installation I can execute to re-add the sound
hardware and drivers?
Otherwise, any tips on pinpointing the sound card as the faulty component
would be appreciated.

FTP Problem
Hi,
I am having a very odd problem with FTP. Basically, it won't work. The FTP
client seems to connect but then issues an error and no files appear on the
remote server. The last time I needed to use FTP was in February of this
year, and it worked fine. Now, when I try it, it goes nowhere.
I have tried several different FTP clients and accounts, all with the same
outcome. It is not a firewall problem; I run only Win XP Pro firewall and
have tried it with that disabled + anything else that even MIGHT effect
connections. I have tried it in Safe Mode with no success which makes me
think it is not a conflict with another app - though I don't believe I have
added anything lately.
I am attaching the Session Log from WS_FTP Pro to the end of this note in
case that might help.

Hanging up at shut down problem
Dell XPS Home - 300 G hard drive, 4 G RAM XP/SP3 Kaspersky Internet Suite

For about a month, when I shut down my pc, shut down seems to 'hang'. I get
the normal shut down screen,"savings settings' windows is shutting down'etc."
Then a second or two later, get a black screen, and then back to shutting
down, etc. again. This time my pc does shut down. I cannot pinpoint
anything I could have done to cause this. Only changes made during this
timeframe is uninstalling previous version of S &D & installing latest
version (V1.6.0.31) and installing any windows/office 2007 updates. Also
installed a second printer.
I am NOT very experienced in how to troubleshoot what could be causing this.
i was advised to look at the Event Log, but that is way over my knowledge to
interpret. Also was suggested to do this (below) but I don't know what that
is, or what it does, so didn't know if I should try that or not?? I would

How do I tweak the TCP/IP stack in XP? I have DSL at about 2 Mb/sec.

For several days now, the list of files and folders is reversed in any

FTP Problem
Hi,
I am having a very odd problem with FTP.

Is this normal?
I am using Windows XP Pro SP3 and use AVG 8.0 as my sole Antivirus and
Antispyware protection. I scan once a week and update everyday. I have been
using this product for a few years (since AVG 6) and not once (okay, maybe
once or twice in three years) has it found a virus or spyware, other than
tracking cookies. I don't use the internet very often except to visit
"mainly" the links in my Favorites list. I also do several Google searches,
but also use AVG's Link Checker to navigate to safe pages only.
Is it normal to be 100% virus and spyware free, or is AVG letting viruses
and spyware through without seeing it? Or maybe I am simply fortunate to not
have run into any malware as such? (I have visited some "questionable" sites
before and even then, had no threats found!)
I don't ever get pop ups or a slow computer environment (characteristic of
spyware) and my home page has never changed. I don't think any unauthorized
programs are doing something they shouldn't, based on normal computer
activity. Does it sound like my computer is clean? Is AVG a good product,
or am I unknowingly infected by threats? Or is it too hard to say? Or am I
asking too many questions! Tag: Error constantly showing on start up Tag: 1934378

How to use Acronis 9 to backup Win XP o/s?

I'd like to do something fairly simple - backup XP with all it's updates and

Copy the Recovery partition
I have a Dell Dimension. The WinXP "Recovery Disk" for this computer is on

My question is
Is there a way to copy the "Recovery Disk" from its partition to an external

Hard Disk, I can reinstall the WinXP from the CD back to a new Hard Disk?
If possible, I would like to use whatever tools there are in the WinXP. I

AVG Update problem
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2, with DSL connection. I have
AVG antivirus free version 7.5, Comodo firewall, Spyware Blaster and
Hive
Cleanup. All of these have run well together and I have had no
problems. Today I updated AVG which I do on a regular basis and it ran
successfully however afterwards it said that there was another update
so I ran it again but this time it failed. I tried running it several
times with the same result. The last time it did somethig like this it
gave me a missing bin file error code but this time all it says was
connection with update server failed. It turned out that the the
problem was on the AVG side and I didn't have to do anything and AVG
wasn't of any help whatsoever. I have looked in other forums to see if
there was an answer to this but wasn't able to find anything. Does
anyone know how I can correct this? Any help would be appreciated.

This is probably a residue of a virus infection that was removed by your
virus scanner. Click Start / Run / msconfig.exe, then click the Startup tab.
Now locate the entry LUProdRg.exe and remove the tick in front of it.

First step is to delete all windows temp/temp files. If still no joy,
find the call in the registry and delete the key.

The OP's error message of
C\WINDOWS\TEMP\LUProdRg.exe
demostrates that the offending file has already been deleted.

Yes it is,and since it is an Symantec update file the poster needs to
reinstall Nortom.

I am puzzled. Are you suggesting that this Norton product installs an
executable in the %temp% directory? Or could it be that some malware created
an executable of the same name as the Symantec update file, and that the
OP's virus scanner subsequently deleted it but left a reference to it in the
registry?

Hi Pegasus,
Here's my so called logic, but since the op hasen't responed on wheather he
even has a Symantec product installed it's kind of a moot point.
Googling "LUProdRg.exe" it seems that it is the update exe. for
Symantec products and I was thinking that the install was corupted in some
way hence the reinstall, now I'm leaning more in the way that the windows
installer is corupted and using the cleanup utility might be more of a fix,
this has happened to me in the past and in the op's original msg. the error
looks like one that would popup with a corrupted windows installer file.
Apon bootup "LUProdRg.exe" will start to check for updates and if the
installer needs a cleanup this error will popup.
Have a good day.
