    - XP SP3: Windows Installer not working After completing the installation of XP SP3 and the necessary restarts I am unable to install any new software that uses the Windows Installer. Also tried re-registering per the KB and restarting to have it work properly but no luck. Everytime I restart the windows installer installation always runs, the event viewer shows no issues.     - Vista question about "compatibility mode" and "safe mode". Sorry for posting a Vista question in the XP section, but I just dont know where is the vista newsgroup or if it exists. Anyway, my problem is im trying to run a program which can only run under two conditions: 1) Can only run under windows XP. 2) Needs to run in safe mode to work correctly. The first problem I can solve it by simply runing the program under compatibility mode (so it thinks its running under XP SP2). but the problem is that in Safe Mode I can't use change the compatibility mode because the option is greyed out. So my question is, is there any other way to use compatibility mode while in Safe mode? like from the command line? Many thanks in advance.     - Downloading stops for no reason ... Downloading used to be an easy job. However, it's getting more and more difficult. Used to be that whenever I download stuffs, where-ever I downloaded it from, downloading itself poses no problem. I could even download an entire CD-ROM ISO content, over 700MB in size, in one shot. Then things started to degrade. First, it was the download from file-sharing services such as MegaUpload or RapidShare that gave me problems. The download just stops in the middle for no apparent reason. At first I thought it was the ADSL modem or port problem. It wasn't. Then I thought it was the ISP throttling bandwidth. It wasn't either. At the time, downloading from plain-old HTTP or FTP sites were still okay. Only file sharing services such as RapidShare or MegaUpload that gave me headaches. Then, this thing turns uglier. Downloading from regular FTP sites, or even downloading a PDF file as small as 4MB would just stop in the middle. So I thought, hey, it must be the browser. Changed my browser, the problem persisted. Change browser again, hey, the same. At that time, web pages are still okay, even webpages with lots and lots of pictures open fine. Now, things has gone from bad to worse. No matter which browser I use (Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, Safari, Opera), sometimes the webpage would just load half-way. Click on the "reload" page, the page reloads from scratch ... and stops at half way. Webpages with lots of pictures fair the worst. Pictures loads halfways, some even didn't load. There are all sorts of things that I just can't explain anymore. So now, to all of you with so much experiences ---- What the heck is wrong with my computer ???? I am connecting to the Net via ADSL. Aztech modem. PC is Pentium Duo-Core based. OS is XP Home. 4GB of RAM. 250 GB of Hard Disk. I have scanned my PC with anti-virus softwares up and down, no virus. I have also check the firewall settings. Nothing wrong. Trojans? I dunno. But so far, Norton isn't telling me anything. So to all with so much wonderful experience ---- is there _ANY_ possibility that some settings in my PC has been changed somehow, in causing the downloading problem??? BTW, check the line also.     - SP3, I can't cheak the digital signature. I can't cheak the digital signature when I install Windows XP SP3, when I double click on the file it comes up with the usual warning asking if I want to install it, then when I go to click on Microsoft Corporation to cheak the digital signature it does nothing (It does not show the certificate information like it should do), I've downloaded it twice to see if it was corrupted etc and tested both on 2 systems but both do the exact same thing.     - Basic security Hi group I dont have xp rigth now, so this message can have some inexact information, but I believe here its enough to understand. I rigth clicked one folder inside MyDocuments, and then I established this folder as private, meaning that other users of the same computer cant see file content of any file inside this folder. Then I placed the hard disk on another computer, to verify that file content cant be accessed, and verified all ok, files cannot be read. The folder was not encripted, because it have exe files wich Im affraid, could be damaged, I dont know if such damage by using encription, is possible. Do you think the folder content is really innaccesible?. I recall the aspect that I dont want to encript by the presence of .exe files. Of course, resuming I say: Is a folder made private, secure if other persons take your hard disk?, at least under usual attacks, DOS access, Safe Mode Access, etc. Of course, all would be decided if I can encript the folder.     - Font problem - maybe a virus issue? Hello, I've had a few problems with my PC lately, mainly on shutting down I was getting a message box saying that a program was having a problem (can't remember exact words) and asking if I wanted to stop it from running. The application that was mostly doing this was "gcasDtServ.exe" (sometimes it was "GoogleDesktop.e")which I've found to be part of Microsoft AntiSpyware. I also had a file with a similar name which was "GCASDTSERV.EXE-04B13CAF.pf" which could be a related file. I read that sometimes this gcas file has been hijacked and used for virus type activity so I did a full virus scan using my McAfee software and also the Microsoft OneCare product. Both came up OK, no virus. I was thinking about deleitng the .pf file mentioned above, but next time I went to look for it it was gone. My shut-down problem seems to have been fixed for the moment, but now I'm having an odd problem with my fonts in Outlook and Word. When I use Arial it will only appear in Bold. I have not selected bold and I can't get rid of it. When I checked Format/Font I noticed that the dialogue box doesn't have an option for "Regular" under "Font Style". It seems to be the only font that does not have this option. What has happened to it? How can I get it back? I checked in the WINDOWS/Fonts folder to see if there was a font in there called Arial, and there is, it's called "arial.ttf". Does anyone now how I can fix this, and does this sound virus related?     - Windows crashes... My sister has a four-year-old Dell 2400 with WinXP. A few days ago, when she booted up, Windows began to load, then the screen went black and her mouse and keyboard went out. The power light on the tower was still on. The same thing happened after several attempts to boot. When I went around to look at it, I booted into safe mode and began to do a system restore. Right in the middle of the restore the screen went blank. I opened the case and made sure all cables were firmly seated. Grasping at straws I booted to the CMOS setup and looked at the event viewer.     - Update for Microsoft Outlook Junk Email Filter 2003 (KB949044) Pro I am not sure if this is a Office or Windows problem. My XP system runnig on Office2003 had been trying to do this update for the last month or so. It kept updating- something it says the update is installed, other times it says there is an error. Even when it said the update was sucessful and the system did its updating after closedown, I kept getting the screen that shows that an update will be perform when I shutdown the computer.     - Keyless installation of XP SP3 I think most of you are aware that XP SP3 has a new feature that permits you to install XP without entering a product key. Doing so gives you a 30-day grace period before being required to enter the pk. Activation requires entry of the product key at the time of activation if it has not been previously entered. In effect, this makes your XP SP3 cd a trial copy. To do a keyless installation, when you install XP and reach the screen where you are asked to enter the pk, leave the fields blank and click Continue. To take advantage of this you must be using an XP SP3 integrated cd so you will need to slipstream XP SP2 and the download from https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en I use nLite for the slipstreaming. You must do this on an XP x86 machine. Do NOT use Vista. I have not had occasion to use the rearm command in XP SP3 but it may work as it does in Vista with a keyless install. The rearm command gives you an additional 30-day grace period and may be used up to three times. The command is "slmgr -rearm".     - Slipstreaming SP3 using HD based ISO I still have the ISO image on hard drive from when I slipstreamed SP2 with XP Pro gold to produce a bootable XP SP2 CD. I'm wondering if I could use that HD based ISO image to merge with SP3, using Autostreamer, to produce an XP SP3 ISO image. It will be interesting to see if SP3 will be available free on CD. MS has done that twice in 2004. In Feb 2004 they released a Security Update CD that included SP1A and all subsequent updates. That CD was widely distributed and available free by mail, and at the checkouts at BestBuy, Staples, etc. It was released to address a security concern.     - XP Home Edition with Office XP Student Teacher Edition My PC has been taking an extreme amount of time to boot, so last night I reinstalled windows xp Home SP1. For the install, I used the option of installing a fresh copy over the existing copy without reformating the disc partition. I then went to install Office xp standard for students and teachers version 2002 and the disk will not load. I copied the contents of the disc onto my hard drive and attempted to run from there, the info copied fine but it still would not execute the set-up program. It looks like a copy of the office programs are still on my C drive in the program files folder, but when I click on the app, the computer crashes. Help Please. I have now wasted about 15 hours on this nonsense. Should I reformat the HD and start from scratch? Finally, it appears that the computer is running about 50% slower than normal.     - Dead Sound Device after Software Install This is XP Sp2, C2D 6400, 2 GB RAM, Asus P5LD2 MoBo with RealTek High Definition audio device. After installing some audio software (NCH Swift Sound suite www.nch.com.au), the Realtek sound device was dead. Checking 'Sounds and Audio Devices' in the control panel, I get 'no audio device', all buttons and boxes there are greyed out. DVD-Writer, DVD-ROM and WebCam not recognized anymore. I uninstalled those in Device Manager, then running the Add Hardware wizard brought them back to life but not Realtek. Uninstalled all NCH software and cleaned the registry, to no avail, the sound device is still dead. Device is enabled, driver info says it's working properly, properties are set to 'use audio features .. use mixer features .. etc .. on this device'. Any hint as to what to try next much appreciated.     - WinXP SP3 Issues I am in a corp enviroment using Novell as NOS. I have mutliple PC's of varying makes and models. mostly HP and dell. I started updating PC's yesterday and I always do a test on them one at a time to see if the patch will cause problems with our other software. Here is my findings so far; 4 with problems : 2 without... 50% 1. One PC is now in a reboot loop whereas safe mode doesn't work... will have to do a restore. I will have to work on this problem to find a fix... i suspect it is the stop: C0000139 GDI file missmatch error... (so they said they fixed it in this release) but i will see tommorrow when i get a hold of the PC... 2. Two PC's installed fine and rebooted fine, however repeated attempts to revisit microsoft or windows update site has a issue where after the Microsoft update site finishes its scan, it reports more patches due (mostly office 2003 patches) but never the less after selecting them for download and install they all fail. Says an error like this "a problem is preventing updates to install" (or something similar). The SP3 apparently breaks both the windows or microsoft update site from being used again. However, you can go to the download site and download the patches one at a time and install them with out issue. I used Microsoft's free tech support service last night and after 6 hours of them remoteing in, i finally have a batch file that re-registers all the .dll files for windows update. This has fixed the broken updaters. 3. One PC would not allow me to log-in to the network (i am on novell client 4.91) and had to go into safe mode to uninstall novell client and reinstall it to fix that issue. 4. Two PC's installed just fine and did not exhibit the issues described above. 50% shot of it working correctly... one note however, On two of the broken ones, I used the administrator download to install it from our network drive instead of downloading from web. One of them being the reboot looper... I will hold off installing / rolling out more until microsoft releases SP3(b)... Plea for sanity... Come on MS listen to us and get it right.... This thing has to be solid if we (I) as an administrator are to roll this out to 150+ computers in my organization... or I will have each user call your free support line when they blow up....     - Why do pictures from my Digital Camera cause Windows Explorer to Crash with Thumbnails? Computer is a new Dell Precision 3400 with dual core Pentium and 2 GB RAM. OS is manufacturer's load of XP with SP2 and all of the latest updates since delivery last month. Camera is a Nikon D300 shooting in 14-bit Raw mode. Sometimes -- and only in some folders -- Windows Explorer barfs when asked to display thumbnails. If it fails in a folder, it will fail everytime in that folder so there's obviously something about the pictures in that folder that kills it. BUT ... when I view the same folders from another (but older) WinXP over the network with thumbnails, there's no problem and the images of the JPG in the folder are displayed properly. What possible incompatibility could exist between a folder of digital pictures, about half .NEF and the other half .JPG and one WinXP computer but not another?     - User received remote desktop disconnect often Several times a day a user who works remotely is receiving: "The remote session to the remote computer was ended by means of an administration tool. Your administrator might have ended your connection." When I look for info on debugging this the only thing I see is that the admin may have disconnected the user, this is not the situation.     - Slow Printing Problem - New Twist! One of my users - like many other people out there - is having the issue where if they select "file -> Print" from just about any application on their machine, it is taking 30 to 60 seconds for the Print Dialog Box to appear. We are using ALL network printers that par printing via SMB and using Unix Based (LPR Port) printing, and all of us ar using WinXP Pro an an Active Directory environment. No other users on any other machines are experiencing this problem. And now for the twist!... Other users on the SAME MACHINE are NOT experiencing this problem!     - The system cannot find the batch label specified From time to time I have encountered this cryptic error, and I could not understand why the perfectly good script will generate this error, until today. It seems like the if the target label is spanning the batch processor's buffer (blocksize=512, from my observation on Win2K & XP), the error message is generated. To test my theory, I have created simple batch file as following. goto BROWSER rem ##################################################################################################################### rem ########################################################################################################################### rem ########################################################################################################################### rem ########################################################################################################################### :BROWSER If the :BROWSER spans buffer boundary, then batch processor will not find the label and throw error. It is hard to imagine that Microsoft has not encountered this issue internally. Fixing this issue will be extremely simple and it won't slow down the batch processor that much.     - Can't reassign program to file type Recently I noticed that my PLT files had lost their association with my plot program GOPLOT.EXE. I tried to reassociate PLT files with the program, but every time I do, Internet Explorer winds up as the associated program. Note that GOPLOT.EXE is a standalone executable and is not installed via the normal installation procedures, thus it doesn't show up on the default list of programs to associate with files, but in the past I just browsed for the program, associated it with the PLT extension, and it worked fine.     - Windows Time and Event Log Order Hi, I have several PCs appear to have the date change on them for periods of less than an hour every couple of days or so. When I go into event viewer and look at the appplication or system event log, I leave the default view up and as you scroll down the list the date will change then change back to the right order. If I go to View/Newest First or Oldest First, it stays consistent, for instance one event will show 2/10/08, then the next 3/10/08 then the next back to 2/10/08. Changes back to the correct date appear to sometimes occur after a synchronization with a time server so I'm assuming that events in the event log have an internal date and time that is not shown, so that in the default list view the order is correct, but the date and time shown in the list view reflects the date and time in windows when the event was recorded. Do my assumptions seem correct? Has anyone seen this behaviour before? I need to understand further how the time in the BIOS and the time in Windows work with each other. I'm further assuming that the reason the events are in that order is that the BIOS time is not changing and so the internal date/time of the event then remains constant allowing me to see the correct order of events.     - Restoring From Windows Backup Utility I am currently running Windows XP MCE. I created a backup and put it onto an external HDD. From there I copied the .bkf file to another drive and luckily I did because the other drive crashed. However now when I go to restore the .bkf it says "Unexpected end of backup set in filename.bkf created on 5/6/2008 at 10:36AM." What can be causing this error?     - Windows XP SP3 Prevents Other Updates Installed SP3 on a fresh XP install. Everything went fine (accounting for the usual extreme time it takes to do this and the other BS). pretty sure you can do a repair install over it and use the new key.
