    - WindowsXP SP3 can't connect to Skype with Panasonic phone WindowsXP SP3 installed smoothly. However, when I now try to use my Panasonic phone and Panasonic's USB adapter to connect to Skype, I get a message that Skype is already in use. Also, when I quit the USB adapter program, the adaper does not shut down. Everything worked very well prior to inatalling SP3. Does anyone have any suggestions?     - Can't disconnect Web folder Hi, In My Network Places, I have a connection set up to a folder on a SharePoint Server site. After I boot up, I can click the folder in My Network Places from within Windows Explorer. It asks for my credentials, and then I'm in until the next reboot. The problem is that once I've authenticated, my entire system is slowed down. I'm not sure why that is so, but I thought that an easy fix would be to disconnect (rather than having to reboot or just live with the slowness). However, I can't find a way to disconnect. Right-clicking the folder does not produce any Disconnect option. Disconnect Network Drive doesn't work because I haven't mapped to any drives. Any ideas? Thanks!     - Trouble with internet connect after SP3? The only way that I can connect to the internet is to shutdown my ZoneAlarm firewall and then start up my Win XP firewall. This lets me connect and then I can turn on the ZoneAlarm firewall again and shut down my Windows firewall. I can then connect to the ISP with ZA activated. However, when I reboot, I must go through this again. It seems that this started after my SP3 installation.     - Ipconfig /displaydns When I run the Ipoconfig /flushdns command at the prompt the return message is indicating that it ran Successfully. Yet, when I run the Ipconfig /displaydns command the table entries are still present. I have tried running the release, renew and register commands to correct the problem but the same table entries are still present. Their are no ARP Table entries present.     - Windows Update Note Pad Have MCE2005 and sp3 update failed with a 0x80004005. Have the AMD Athlon chip. Looking at notepad and searching for sp3 I find 4 "hit a transient error" lists and job ended at that point. I'm a novice, but trying to learn, and does anyone have an idea what that message means? Don't want to dig the hole any deeper than I'm at now after reading of some of the problems users are experiencing.     - Improper Language Display in Start Up Menu HI, I had two XP OS installed on the same computer. I installed Traditional Chinese first, then installed Simplified Chinese. The Startup Menu displayed in S.Chinese properly. But when I updated the SP3, I did it in reverse order. So now it is displaying improperly. Kindly please help me how to correct this. Thanks!     - Windows XP boot up OK, this is going to be wordy but I'm trying to get all the details. I haven't changed anything recently but now I'm getting the warning icon about security alerts I have been using zone alarm and AVG for a year and this has never happened before. The worst thing though is maybe another problem but when it boots it will go through the XP screen where the blue dashes move across the screen and then go blank and not do anything else or right after loging in it will load the wallpaper and then not do anything else. In either case the hard drive LED is not doing anything, the machine just sets there. No matter how long I leave it, it's not coming up. At that point the only thing to do is force a reboot. When I get the wallpaper, I can CNTRL,ALT,DEL and sometimes a process called "x10nets.exe" is using 50% of CPU but even if I shut that down it still won't boot. If it goes to the XP screen it goes black and stops, if it goes to the wallpaper, there is no task bar and no icons, just the hour glass.     - Missing Icons in Control Panel OK, I assume my problem has happened to someone else and already answered in the posts, but I haven't found it so here goes, I think this started with the SP3 upgrade, which I have reversed (no shows XP, sp2). Half of my program icons for the control panel (sounds, mouse, display, printers) are in classic view the other half are in the category view. Real pain when trying to install or repair programs and hardware as one is in one view the other in the other view. Can someone PLEASE help me get all of these back on both views. I have tried another system restore, but keep getting the message that my computer cannot be restored and nothing has been changed.     - Strange login Suddenly, my homebuilt winxp home desktop has developed a strange login practice. When i boot up in the morning, nothing happens for about 4 minutes, then away she goes and no more probs. Its got an nforce SLI board loaded with 7800 nvidia cards. IBM Deskstar hard drive that checks out. I've checked the bios and run several tests but no glitches. Device manager says a-ok on drivers.     - No Open Button in File Download Security Warning Dialog Box XP SP2 IE6 I have a user who is trying to open a PDF file that *she* posted to one of our internal Intranet sites. When she clicks the link she gets the File Download - Security Warning dialog box, but there is no Open button--just Save and Cancel, and the Save button doesn't work. The user is able to open other PDF files on the same site, from the Internet, and off her local hard drive, so it does not appear to be any kind of issue with file type associations. I've done some googling, but everything that I've found has indicated, "this problem does not occur with Windows XP SP2 or Internet Explorer 6," which I found rather aggravating because my user is running both and has the problem. Most of the articles I've seen talk about Vista and IE7, and mention the certificate (.cer) file. I thought that I would try importing our root CA to see if that does the trick, but beyond that I have no ideas.     - Display of Font Issue Hi: There are 3 PCs. and I installed Word 2000 on all, three. Upon typing on each of three pcs., ... one pc. at a time, I noticed there has characteristic difference among three. Two PCs, XP and Vista respectively has identical, in regard to 'Size of Letter' which is 'thick and bold-type,' however one PC with XP has 'thin and non-bold' type, even though I set '10'/Size along with 'New Roman' on three PCs. Is it because each PC. has different template that causing this difference/issue? If does, is there a way for me to set identical display as to Font of '10pt' upon typing?     - Language automatically switches from Chinese to English Hello, I am trying to add support for Chinese PRC on a system (Win XP Pro), and we installed the East language packs and Chinese PRC shows up as a language in the toolbar, but whenever I select Chinese and go to type in a program such as Word 2003 or Internet Explorer and begin to type the language automatically changes from Chinese to English, and even if I change it back as soon as I type again it will switch back to English. In Word, automatic language detection is enabled, and both English and Chinese are the first two options, but even if I disable automatic detection and select Chinese it will still automatically select English.     - Change in Appearance of Start Menu I'm sure this is a silly question, however, I do not know how to fix the problem. When I go to the "Start" button and click on "My Documents" I no longer get the sc reen that I used to that allows me to choose "Shared Documents". It goes directly to "My Documents", which isn't what I want to do. I certainly don't remember changing anything, and if I did, I certainly don't know what I did or how to undo it.     - Hotmail down today? On both of my XP machines Hotmail times out. I can get to my Hotmail sign-in pages but trying to connect to Hotmail is causing both XP machines to time-out. I have no problem accessing websites on my XP's. Just Hotmail and some of the Windows discussion sites. Using Hotmail Live on my Vista machine I can access my Hotmail accounts but not on my XP's.     - Another SP3 upgrade failure and disaster I'm running a HP P4 with XP Pro SP2. Nothing fancy, just a basic 2005 business machine with only a few application installed on it and all stock hardware. Never gives any problem. I installed SP3 on it yesterday and after a (seemingly) normal install, it rebooted and came up with SP3. Then the problems began. First I noticed that the machine was virtually nonresponsive taking ages to respond to any command except mouse movement. Poping up the task manager showed that CPU usage was pegged at near 100 percent. A number of reboots did not fix the problem and other than the CPU usage and nonresponsiveness, everything appeared normal. I finally elected to uninstall SP3 and did a System Restore to the point before the install. After unistalling SP3, system response returned to normal and CPU usage was back down to about 3 percent. (Interestingly, at this point the System page shows that the OS is SP2, as you would expect, but if you go to Add/Remove Programs it shows that SP3 is installed. I didn't risk trying to remove SP3 there since the system was now running normally again.) So much for SP3; I'll stay with SP2 for the forseeable future! Tag: MS Elite 1011 keyboard Tag: 1900989

    - EMERGENCY - Infected system can't fix - does portable AV exist? Not sure if this is the right NG. One of my dual-boot systems is infected with win32.jeffo and it took out comodo's firewall & defense as well as Threatfire & PC Tools AV. WinXP side won't boot and now the Vista side is infected too. As aggressive as this appears to be, I don't think it would be a good idea to connect the HD's to the other computer in attempt to clean it.     - unable to open new file I've got a new Dell desktop (2.33GHz, 2gig RAM) just last month and it works fine. Other than occasionally I cannot open a new file/webpage/folder etc... eg. When I am using IE7 to surf, and I wanna open a new tab, it doesn't open up. At this time I can't even open anything new such as a window or another exe application.. However the problem is fixed when ie. I close a tab on IE and then I can open ie. a new folder. The problem compounds itself with me being able to do less and less without first closing something, be it a tab on IE, or a window, or an application. Any ideas ?     - hangs / freezes I am working on a Dell OptiPlex GX280 that up till last week worked fine (~3 years). 1GB RAM, 2.8GB Pentium, 80GB HDD SATA, CD-RW, XP SP2. Is a network workstation. Virus & malware signatures updates hourly. Has decent firewall. Recently had added second 512MB RAM strip, but ran with no issues for weeks following. Run MS Updates routinely, but not yet loaded XP SP3 (it was not yet released at time hang/freeze issue began). Has suddenly begun to hang/freeze at about 2-3 minutes post log-in. Gives no warning, no error messages, no error beeps, continues all green lights on back panel. Initially reset to earlier restore point with no positive effect. Then did repair of OS with no positive effect. Ran Dell Diagnostics which found no hardware issues - all tests passed. Specifically retested Memory and HDD and all still passed those further diagnostics. Have tested USB keyboard and USB mouse separately and both are fully functional. Ultimately reformatted HDD and did clean install, but still continues to hang/freeze at about 2-3 minutes post log-in. Can boot to CD and during lengthy OS repair or install there was no hang. Can boot to Safe Mode and device will eventually hang/freeze at about 10-12 minutes post log-in. When hang begins, red light on optical mouse flickers (slow at first then increases to rapid, then suddenly stops); also during this, audio begins to crackle and similarly increases in pace, then stops same as mouse optic light. Did find some info @ MS regarding an "interrupt storm" but the prescribed "fix" for that did not alter my issue in any way. Presently the GX280 still hangs/freezes and nothing I've done has resolved the issue. Has anyone suffered through this type of problem before, and how did you ultimately resolve it?     - Post SP3 Mystery CMD Window After installing SP3 I now have a mysterious CMD window appear whenever I login. It flashes by so quickly that I can't see if there is anything in it. I've used SysInternals AutoRuns and the only thing I can guess at is Office Genuine Advantage. But that was there pre-SP3 and produced no CMD window. Any ideas? Thanks.     - Card Slot Hi, I am running Windows XP on my laptop, and I have a couple of cards that I use for internet. One is a Motorola wireless adapter (because the computer does not have built in wireless), and the other is a Verizon Air Card (for mobile internet). The problem I'm having is that I have to keep reinstalling these cards (using the driver discs) almost every time I switch from one to the other. I never had this problem before. I just wiped out and reloaded (with the stock restore disc), and it has not helped. I have also had problems with a GPS device that plugs into the USB. I've had to reinstall this a couple times too. The details are below: Computer: Panasonic Toughbook CF-51 Wireless Adapter: Motorola WN825G Verizon Air Card: Qualcomm PC5750 If more information is needed to answer this question, please let me know and I'll get it ASAP.     - Wireless problem after installing SP3 Hi After installing SP3 onto an Acer Aspire 1360 (XP Home SP2) it will no longer connect to my wireless network. It simply sits there trying to acquire an IP address but doesn't succeed. It also says the signal strength is low where it is usually excellent and is trying to connect at 1Mbps. Trying to find networks in range results in the claim there are no networks in range. Uninstalling SP3 restores normality. The wireless router is a Belkin with hardware version F5D7231-4 2000.     - System Slowing Down. Any Suggestions. Windows XP, SP2. I have a system that has been running fine for a few years. It has a 3 GHz processor and 4 GB of memory. Recently everything is running much slower. Programs open up very slowly, some Excel workbooks with macros run interminably long. Internet browsing is slow. The LAN is fine, as I can go to another system and it runs the same processes and browses the net quickly. I have scanned for spyware and viruses and removed spyware and found no viruses.     - Persistent "extra linebreak" problem with Live Mail / Hotmail Why isn't there a newsgroup for Live Mail / Hotmail? Anyhow... I'm getting annoying by the extra linebreaks Live keeps inserting in my emails. No matter how careful I am about it, and how good an email looks on my end before sending, it always has that annoying "blank line for every time you hit enter" problem when I go to my sent folder and look at what I sent. It's like it's interpreting all BR tags as P tags. Know what I mean? I even tried emailing from Outlook (which I've configured to sync with my Hotmail account) and it does the same thing, except that when I look at my sent folder in Outlook, the email looks fine.     - Why two different types of app errors? We have an application that is occasionally crashing in random places. Some users get the typical fatal error: "xxxxxxxx" has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. But one of our users always gets something like this: The instruction at "0x003de054" referenced memory at "0x00300034". The memory could not be "written". Any thoughts about why one user would get one whereas someone else would get the other? Are there memory conditions or PC configuration issues that would produce one error rather than the other?     - SP3 error meassage Local Network Connection failed to authenticate I loaded SP3 through MS updates and now I am getting a message that says " Windows cannot connect you to the network" Everything seems to be working fine and I can connect to the internet as well as the server and other places on my network but the toolbar on the bottom has the network connection icon with a yellow excalamtion point on it. When I go to the icon it says "Local Area Connection Speed 100 Mbps Authentication failed" any idea on how to resolve this? Asking it to repair itself does not help.     - XP SP3 Installation issue with msdaremr.dll I've tried installing SP3 via the Windows Update site but it keeps stopping with an error message of 'cannot copy msdaremr.dll'. Disabling Norton AntiVirus 2007 makes no difference. Has anyone encountered this when installing SP3 and how did they resolve it?     - SP3 stops Microsoft update working Installed the official SP3 on a brand new Dell Inspiron Core 2 Duo 2.66 with 4 G RAM last night before installing any programs. It immediately stopped the Windows update site from working any further - any attempted installations failed, so I couldn't update Office etc after loading them.     - SP3 direct download link needed Tried DLing SP3 yesterday and found the file size too small, about 230 meg. used this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en What's happening is, MS is DLing SP3 to the Internet directory (which is a small partition with little free space) instead of to a TMP or TEMP directory which point to large partitions with loads of free space! Two questions: 1) does anyone have a direct link to MS DL site for the latest SP3 release (I'll use a DLer program which saves exactly where I want them)? 2) outside of changing the temporary Internet directory location, is there any way to circumvent MS from using that directory as its temp location? This keyboard appears (to me) that it has keys that are illuminated.
It operates fine, just as designed, but keys do not light up, that is if they
are designed to do so. If this is so - how do I turn them on?
