    - Document Viewer self installing I've googled this a lot and there seems to be no real answers out there... I recently attempted to uninstall AOL software... and now... Whenever I startup my laptop I get 'Document viewer' wanting to install. After failing, it then asks me to insert the document viewer cd rom. Which I don't have because all my microsoft/windows applications were pre-loaded. After hitting cancel on this, it retries another 2 times and then comes up with a box from .NET telling me there was an exception and that an object wasn't where it wanted to be one etc... When looking in the event viewer I get 2 warning notes for Msi Installer - event 1001 and event 1004. How do I stop it??? Can I just find microsoft document viewer as a free download somewhere???     - Screen Savers We are using XP-Media Edition on our home machine and have set the "Aquarium" as our screen saver. My husband would like to use this screen saver on his XP-Pro machine at work. Is there a way to just "copy" a file off our home system and "paste" it into a particular place on his work system?     - KB936929 disabled my PC I was running Windows XP Media Center 2005 with AMD Athlon processor, SP2 and all updates. Last night when I got home from work I had the little shield telling me that Microsoft updates were available. I installed the update, KB936929. When it was done I got the message saying the update was successful and ready to reboot. I let the PC reboot and it goes into an infinite boot sequence. I get the black screen where I can select what I wanted loaded, I let it default to Windows XP. I then get the HP logo screen, then a black screen apologizing that the boot failed, and if I've recently installed new drivers or software to uninstall it. The boot process continues like this forever. After trying this a few times I selected the option to boot from the last known good session. This didn't change anything, still infinite boot sequence. I tried to go into Safe Mode but got a black screen saying that <windows> \system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt, suggesting that I replace it. I've been doing backups using Acronis to an external disk. I guess I'll have to go this route to get the PC functional again. I've never used Acronis to restore a disk, so I'm hopeful.     - accounts deleted after Sp3 update 2 of my three user accounts were deleted after I finally updated to XP SP3. While the files of these accounts are still under c:/documents and settings/"Users name", is it possible to re-activate deleted accounts? It won't create an account with the same name. I tried creating a new account and copy all files from a deleted one but when logging in that account, programs such as anti-virus and spybot won't launch on startup.     - Nothing happens at boot up. XT SP2 Turned on our sons computer this evening, the fan is heard, the yellow light for disk is on, screen is black, and nothing is responsive. If we press the on/off button it will not shut down and we have to turn off at the wall. The dvd drive will eject, that is all that works. Where does one begin to troubleshoot this? Thanks.     - Windows update stuck after partial install of sp3 I started a download of sp3 and it got stuck after it had downloaded the file. I think avast was virus checking it and taking a long time. I had to cancel the install (which hung while cancelling) and then powered off my machine. Now when I select windows update in explorer it just hangs.     - need help, XP wont let me in. Hello,,,, I have developed a problem with my dual boot system. I have win98 and xp,, win98 being on the c: drive, and xp on the d drive. I switched to xp today after a reboot, all seemed okay as it went through the normal motions, then it produced a screen as if xp had been installed for the first time;; then just ceased up. I havent used xp a great deal, and it doesnt have access to the internet. When I open win' explorer, (via booting back to win98) it shows my D: drive with all of the things that are loaded into xp, including all new folders and stuff that I created last time I was there. (oh, xp was loaded on using fat32, and has been that way for over a year without a problem.) So, one of my main concerns right now is the fact that xp is the boot manager for the dual-boot, and I sure as heck dont want to lose the ability to boot into win98. I have heard that there is a repair tool on my xp disc, and was wondering whether I should try to use that? I also dont have my product key anymore. I downloaded 'magicjellybean' product key finder, and saved it to a file in win98, then from there created a folder on xp (d: drive) and copied it into there,, but realised that I was still in a 98 environment and hence couldnt fire it up to find xp's product number..... still, I dont even know if I need that at this stage because I have the original disc anyway. Can anyone advise on what I should do, or better still, what any of you here would do in the same situation? Basically, I havent really tried anything yet, thought I would come here first.     - Computer gone into overdrive My computer seems to have gone into overdrive. CPU usage 100% constantly, Task Manager/Processes says mainly System. Computer will not shut down on its own. Tried scanning with AVG Virus Checker but that runs very very slowly, other progammes slow and hang up regularly. I did use Reg Cleaner to stop some programmes loading at start up a few days ago, there was no immediate deterioration after that. I had to reload some elements because programmes would not run. I have subsequently run a system restore to a point prior to removing some of the start up programmes, and intsalled SP3 all to no benefit. Hi, when I had IE6 the method outlined below worked perfectly to backup the Favorites sort order (to make it clear, I'm not referring to backing up the Favorites which can be done from within IE using File/Import-Export, I'm referring to being able to back them up so I can later restore them in the EXACT same custom sort order as originally, so I don't have to manually drag hundreds of bookmarks to the order in which they were originally). [i]Sort order is not preserved when you transfer favorites to another PC If you use the Import/Export Wizard or manually copy the URL favorites to another system, the sort order will not be copied to the target system. This is because Windows stores the sort order in the registry. Neither the Import/Export Wizard or manual copy operation will reference the sort order registry key. In order to have the sort order applied to the other PC, export the following registry from the source PC: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites Save the above key as a REG file and apply this in the other computer. The sort order is now copied/overwritten.[/i] The issue is that in IE7 I checked that resgistry key but it seems to not have the favorites in the original sort order but ordered alphabetically.     - SP3 and INETCPL.CPL I am trying to install SP3 on a machine that is fully pactched and has IE7 on it. It fails with a message (unable to copy INETCPL.CPL) when the file exists in the source directory and in system32 so this should not be a problem. I have not had this problem on 2 other machines. The memory could not be "read" I have Norton Corporate Symantec and Spybot updated and runs OK. When I open a program a letter or digit will repeat itself in a blank space (Google, Family Tree Maker, Money 2007, Eudora) erase what is there until I stop and erase it.     - SP3 and beethov9 silliness I installed SP3 on My Dimension 8400 with only one minor glitch. It froze on the restart shutdown and required a power down restart. Everything came up as advertised and the machine shows no ill effects. Then I attempted to update a Dimension 4600. While copying files it couldn't find beethov9.wm_ and gave the option of retry or skip. Retry didn't work so I clicked skip and it proceeded to about three quarters of the way through the installing files section and choked again on the same file. This time the only options were retry or cancel. Retry didn't work so I canceled. Unfortunately this canceled the whole installation resulting in an uninstall of the update and a warning that it had done a partial installation and the machine may not work properly. After much gnashing of teeth and another failed attempt after assuring file permissions were in order, I started in Safe Mode, logged in as the Default Administrator and the installation completed flawlessly.     - Audio problem on HP ZX5000 Hi -- Could use some suggestions, please. I keep losing the audio on this notebook computer. First I noticed that occasionally I didn't get the XP sound when it loaded. Now I never do. Am getting absolutely no audio whatsoever, not from a music CD, or from any other sounds. This is true for both Windows Media Player and QuickTime. The operating system is XP Home. Everything is up to date. The audio controller is SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio. Everything is and has been installed. There are no yellow exclamation points in Device Manager. There's plenty of memory and plenty of storage space. Today I decided to address the problem as thoroughly as I could and have checked every setting I can think of. Nothing is muted. Everything seems right. I deleted the existing SoundMax driver and the computer reinstalled it when I rebooted. Still no joy. I used the driver CD that came with the computer and reinstalled the SoundMax drivers. At first, there was no change and then all of a sudden, there was sound again. Joy! I left the computer on and plugged in (not running off battery), and went away for several hours.     - FIX for AMD Athlon computers and XP SP3 I Googled Intelppm.sys and got the following URL for TechNet forum discussion where a solution for the crash after installation of XP SP3, is discussed and addressed. There are other good articles from other forums as well discussing the problem which was known BEFORE Microsoft officially released SP3. THEY should have known about this as it wasn't a secret.     - System restore I would like to do a system restore and have a couple of questions. First, I have just run a virus checker and it has cleaned up a few viruses. Will those viruses be restored if I do an XP system restore? Second, when chosing a restore point, if I chose a point, does that mean everything will be restored from just _before or just after _after that point?     - WinXP SP3 installation I have a friend who is using dialup connection and wish to update his WinXP SP2 to SP3. So I download the following file for him xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso But we don't know how to use that file to install SP3.     - Weird CPU usage in XP My CPU usage periodically (say every 5 seconds) jumps up to around 35% then back to 0 when the pc is idle. This seems to be causing jumpiness in games and other heavy use applications. Task manager lists the process doing this as "system" which, as far as i know, can cover a host of different things. Process explorer ruled out several services but did not name what was causing these spikes in CPU usage (just "system" even within the "system" tree). I have tried scanning the system for spyware, viruses and rootkits and even reinstalling windows (i.e. running the repair option to reinstall all the system files without changing settings/files etc), but to no avail. Heres the weirdest bit - if I go into task manager and kill the "system" process, obviously it doesn't actually get 'killed' - it stays there (and still uses the exact same amount of memory), but the cpu usage spikes stop. Also if I boot in safe mode it doesn't happen, but if I disable everything (startup items and non-essential services) in msconfig manually it still does!     - IE7 install failing on XP SP3 I've created a slipstreamed CD of Windows XP with service pack 3 and installed it in a test computer. All seems to be working fine (altough it would have been really nice to include IE7, VMP11 and the .NET Framework in it), but IE7 doesn't install. I tried the installation several times: it downloads its updates, runs the malware removal tool, starts installing IE, and then fails miserably and asks to reboot.     - Instead of Reinstalling XP?? My company laptop is giving me some trouble either through being improperly shutdown or a virus, not sure myself. All of my data files are backed up on a separate external drive. Since everyone in our company has the exact same laptop (brand, model only difference is the serial#), would it be possible to just format my bad hard disk and copy my coworker's drive as an exact duplicate? I swapped his hard drive into my laptop and everything worked, which seems logical to me. I'm just not sure if I can copy every file from his hard drive (os system, files, registry keys and all) and have it work again. Main reason for this is that the computer has a bit more on it than just XP Pro and I would have to reinstall over a dozen other programs that we all use in the office. My plan is to duplicate the hard drive in his laptop through a data cable to my formatted hard drive in an external enclosure. Any ideas if this will work or are there important files that can't be duplicated? I just wanted to ask before I start and possibly screw up the the drive even more. Thanks for the help.     - Device manager Blank I just upgraded my Win XP machine with Service Pack 3. I am not sure if the problem started then or before but when I click on Control Panel-System-Hardware Tab-Device Manager I get a blank screen. Nothing is populated in the device manager window but the window does say device manager. I looked online and found a note stating that this can occur if Plug and Play service is turned off. My service is turned on (set to automatic) but I noticed the options to start, stop, pause and resume are all greyed out. Is this normal? Any ideas on how to get my device manager back? I can open System - Hardware - Device Manager but it does not display anything.

I left it for quite some time in case still searching but it is not showing
the hourglass.

This seems to have happened since I ran XP SP3 - PC is a HP Desktop, my
Toshiba laptop is OK.

Not sure if related but the software that I use to download pictures from
Canon EOS camera does not seem to seeing the camera which why I wanted to use
Device Manager. This has definitely happened since XP SP3 because I
downloaded 400+ images on Monday night.
