Desire stop office critical patches from upgrading outlook

Hi, I have office 2003 and Outlook version 6.0

I had said yes to update patches for office, and on install said ok to
update Outlook.

After install and due to problems long story (with hotmail) I do not want
Outlook updated.

I restored system and again have ver 6.0 and wish to stay there.

I installed update again to try to get it to work (with hotmail problem -
doesn't work)..and second time installing - it did not prompt/ask if desire
update outlook, as now is in my system file somewhere due to choosing yes
before, on the first install; a file is telling microsoft I want to update
Outlook when installing the critical patches.

I restored again, back to ver 6.

I would like to download the critical patches for office 2003, but the
system now has in a file somewhere that on installing critical updates, to
not ask me if desire to update outlook (to new version), as system has set it
to yes somewhere, due to the fact I said yes the first time.

So, if I allow the patches, it no longer asks if desire to update outlook,
it will just update to the new outlook which I do not want.

Does anyone know the file, where it tells microsoft that I had chosen yes
before, so I can change it to prompt me on installing critical patches for
office 2003 that no, do not update outlook?

And if do know which file, how do I edit the file and what value do I put
in, so that on update of patches I will be prompted and asked if desire to
upgrade outlook?

Office does not have outlook 6, niether does win
Perhaps you refer to outlook express?

Outlook Express is not a part of Office, and any updates to it will be
separate.

Set automatic updates ONLY to TELL you when updates are available.

When you see the icon telling you updates are ready, in IE:

Tools | Windows Update

DO CUSTOM UPDATE

Carefully look at each of the updates you are offered.

Accept only the ones you want to install.

If there is one that you do NOT want, you can "hide" it from future
listings.

HI, I have updates to download when I say yes, and I choose custom and select.

The update to office (ah, made mistake earlier, is not the critical), but
the update to office indeed does first thing update outlook express to the
latest version or the 2003 version and that's what this post is about.

I don't have it set to auto update. It prompts and I choose, and there is
no choice with the office 2003 update (which again, I in error said was the
critical patch, but is not, it's just an update.) The update to office
automatically installs newer version of outlook express which I do not want.

I explained below what the problem is as regarding a file in my system, due
to my letting it install once, now is bypassed so that microsoft does not ask
if want to upgrade outlook. All that is explained below.

Sorry for confusion as I said critical updates, am speaking of an update
which microsoft has been prompting me for, as knows I have older version.

I strongly doubt that OE is updated by any Office update.

OE is NOT a part of Office. Period.

There is something else going on. I have EVERY update EVER offered by
both the Windows and the Office update sites, and my OE is still
version 6.0

Perhaps you have OUTLOOK as part of your Office 2003, and when the
updates are complete, OUTLOOK has somehow become your default email
client??

Do all the updates, open Outlook EXPRESS from a shortcut, look in
TOOLS and see if it is the default mail/news client.

Make the appropriate adjustments.

Hi!

Yes Outlook express is part of office 2003 which is why it attempts to
upgrade it. And if you read my post, you'll see it did so twice, and i
restored my system twice. I do not want the outlook express upgrade due to a
long story won't go into hotmail problem.

So, it's not lke I can accept the office 2003 update as will auto update
outlook express can not fix it to work with hotmail.. Already been there
done that and twice.

and so can't update office at all.

The story is all in my first post.

There are two "Outlook" products:

1) Outlook... it is part of MS Office. It is a very robust program
that does a lot more than email and newsgroups. It is not free.

2) Outlook Express... it is NOT part of MS Office. It only does email
and newsgroups. It is free.

Since you either cannot comprehend that fact, or refuse to, you are
beyond helping.

Sorry, that's not correct.

Outlook Express is part of Windows XP. It's an Email client and
newsreader.

Outlook is a personal information manager and E-mail client, It can be
bought by itself, or as part of any version of Microsoft starting with
Office 97. I run Outlook 2007 here.

They are two very different programs, overlapping in a single
area--they both do E-mail. This is a constant cause of confusion.
Microsoft did nobody a favor when they named two such different
programs so similarly. Fortunately the latest version of Outlook
Express, the one that comes with Windows Vista, is now called "Windows
Mail."

Installing an Office or Outlook update may "hijack" your default Mail Client
to Outlook (OL), but Outlook Express (OE) is /not/ part of MS Office.

Microsoft Outlook updates change the default mail handler to Microsoft
Outlook
[NB: This can happen if your default Mail Client is, e.g., Eudora;
Thunderbird; Yahoo Mail; etc.]

If you leave OL installed, chances are that you'll have to reassert OE as
your default every time you install an OL update:
