    - Sonic Activation Module I see that there is another gay that is annoyed be this poping-up-module. Every time I start the computer this module starts installing.     - Bad_System _Config_Info When trying to start my computer I am getting the following message. It will not boot up in safe or any other mode. My Dell Intel based XP Media Edition Service Pack 2 computer has been downloading some automatic update for a few days on and off (I have dial up) I noticed it was getting near 100% last time I looked. Maybe this update was SP3 and has caused some problem. I have changed to Ram but this error is still coming up. Has anyone came up against this before.     - FAT32 extended partition not recognized as an XP Drive - but can I have a strange situation.. PC Info: AMD X2 4800+, 300gb Seagate SATA drive, 4 gb mem (2 sets dual channel), XP Media Edition. HD partitioned 4 drives (C & D - Fat32, E & F - NTFS) My PC froze last week and I had to press (Ugh!) the reset button. After it rebooted, it went into CHKDSK (which I expected), but it scanned my D Drive first, then went to C, and froze at 30%. After a while I finally reset it again and this time it scanned C: first and finished and then stated that it couldn't check D:, because D: was not an XP drive. My system starts (very, very slowly) and runs (very very slowly), and my D: drive is listed, but not accessible (not a windows drive). Now the weird (and Lucky) part.... I booted with a Win98se floppy and was able to get (using a great free long filename utility) my data off the D: drive, which DOS was able to display. I copied it to the C: drive for recovery off my network. Now the Questions... What can I do to get the D: drive to show back up in Windows and why can I see the data in DOS but not in windows?     - XP automatically starts up immediately after Hibernation I just started using a new HP DC7800. with WIN XP Pro SP2. When the computer goes into hibernation within a minute or so it automatically starts up again. It has 4Gb RAM. There are no AUTO starts in the BIOS. there are no scheduled tasks.     - XP SP3 - SVCHOST.EXE USES 100% CPU - AUTOMATIC UPDATE SERVICE BROK I reloaded XP PRO on my Dell 810 twice with the same result. After install of SP3, I tried installing other updates but windows update fails and says another automatic update is pending and has to complete first. At this point svchost.exe eats 100% cpu and can only be fixed by stopping the automatic update service. I tried rebooting, waiting overnight but the same result. The problem: when she tries to access a picture that was just sent to "my pictures" or one on her desk top the following message pops up. "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" and the system hangs. Process explorer shows that "my pictures is not responding. Looking at the details has: AppName explorer.exe ModVer 5.1.2600.3119 AppVer 6.0.2900.3156 Offset 0012a5b ModName kernel32.dll But if I log on to my account and go to "my computer" and approach the same file via "docs & settings" and onward to her "my pictures folder", then the jpg picture file opens with no difficulty at all.     - Service Pack 3 After installing SP3 to one of my XP Pro Notebook I am no longer able to use Remote Desktop to logon to my win2003 server, error msg is: "Remote Desktop Web Connection Active X Control could not be installed. A connection cannot be made without a working installed version of the control. Please contact the server administrator".     - Help w/ hooking up 2 computers to a modem I've hooked the modem to an Ethernet switch and the 2 comps (both running WinXP SP2) with CAT5 ethernet cables.     - no updates after repair install This system, WinXP home SP2, failed to boot, didn't even get up to windows loading, unable to get to safe mode IPL. After a repair install which went fine the system will not install any of the 93 outstanding updates. I use custom & choose "Review and install other updates If you do not install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929), other updates might still apply to your computer. " There is no error code given. they show 0 size and a disclaimer that the update is downloaded & if I select it will finish installing, which it does not do when selected. I have turned off virus scanning and used the Windows update trouble shooting to no avail. The system appears to be operating normally other than this problem.     - Windows Time Problem Recently my Windows Date and Time has been acting up. I set the date and time and within four or five hours the time is wrong. Example: "At 1pm I set the time as 1:00 pm. By 5pm the Windows time displays 3:35, almost an hour and a half late. If I don't check it for a day or two, it actually shows the date and time as some time on the previous day. Is this a CMOS battery problem or something else. If it were a Cmos battery problem, wouldn't I be having boot problems (ie: error and boot to BIOS?). Thanks for the help.     - Windows Task Manager Memory Usage Issue Hello, I am currently running a C++ program which is supposed to compute something in about three full (24 hours) days. I am a little panicked about the feedback I get from the Windows Task Manager about my program. More specifically, after I minimize the console application that is doing the computation, the Task Manager shows a very small (but growing) amount of memory (7Mb or so) being used by my program, but I know that my program, after some initializations, should use at least 300Mb (and maximum 500Mb, when the dynamically allocated memory is at the maximum). This makes me worry (hopefully irrationally) that Windows has done something --deallocated? -- with part of the memory that my program uses. A good sign is that the "commit charge" did not decrease, so I still hope that I am just witnessing a weird way of showing memory usage in the Task Manager and not anything more sinister. Can anyone with knowledge of how the Task Manager shows memory usage make me get rid of my fears? Alex P.S. I am using Windows XP.     - Persist user profile when removing computer from a domain I am in the process of downgrading my home office and no longer need my computers to be part of a domain. I'd like to remove them from the domain but do not want to lose my user profile in the process. If I remember correctly, when the computer is added to a domain, a new profile is created so I am assuming the same thing will happen when I remove it. I read a suggestion that I should manually create a local user and copy the domain profile using Control Panel - System - Advanced - User Profiles - Copy To button (after rebooting and logging in as Administrator) but the button is always grayed out (disabled). Even with this, I'm not confident that this will persist the entire profile. I'd like to be able to simply remove the computer from the domain and have use of it as if nothing changed - i.e. same wallpaper, desktop icons, favorites, my docs, e-mail settings, etc. Any suggestions?     - How to figure out what's plugging up my hard drive I have a 3 year old Dell computer running WinXP pro.... fully updated.... with a 190 gig hard drive that is almost completely full. Using Add/Remove Programs I've removed all software I'm not using. I've run the WinXP Disk Cleanup utility. But these steps have not solved the glut. I can't figure out what's the remaining space hog. According to Windows Explorer my Progams folder contains 148 gigs. I haven't figured out how to determine which specific folder/program is the disk space hog. I suspect one of the program files has somehow grown way to fat.     - My Private Folder Not Accessible "Access Denied" I have been using the "My Private Folder" application since it was released by Microsoft in 2006. I know MS pulled it soon after, and I know it is not supported. However, I kept using it for my own personal use. Everything was going fine until yesterday, when I suddenly received the error message "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Private Folder is not accessible.     - freezing devices I've read through the posts and don't find one like my problem. Gateway pentium 4, 1 meg ram, All current Microsoft updates to XP Pro and XP Office. No software or hardware addtions, norton internet security, full scan indicated no gremlins. The computer has been running great for a year or so. Two weeks ago my USB scanner would not initialize. Shut it off and rebooted. Turned the scanner back on, no problem. Thought nothing of it until it happened again. Went through the same routine and solved the problem. Two nights ago, I went to the PC to find mouse and keyboard non funtioning. Mouse is USB, Keyboard is PS2. Red power light on optical mouse but no movement. Attempted task manager but with no keyboard, no joy. Hard restart, everything fine. This morning, USB printer failed. Restart, everything is fine. This seems like the start of something big. I was considering a clean reinstall of XP but wanted to get expert opinions first. I thought about the USB hub but the keyboard isn't on it. Computer has USB 1.0 original and USB 2.0 aftermarket however, its been running great for a year or so in this configuration. It is on a home network. Since installing SP3 I can no longer use the /console switch when using
Remote Desktop. Is this true or is there a workaround? THis was a great
feature, it needs to stay as an option.
