    - Administrator profile missing; Restore system do not function I have Windows XP Media Center Edition: I have to redo my question regarding my pc problem. I am such a newbie on this site, and a newbie pc user too. Here it goes: I uninstalled my webroot spyware. Then restarted laptop. When I logged on (administrator account) I got this message, "windows cannot load the users profile but has logged you on with the default profile". Detail "The system can not find the file specified." On the "default profile" that windows logged me on, I can not acces my administrator profile desktop, and all my documents, and also all the programs installed. I tried to use Restore system, it doesn't work. I used to be able to do system restore. I am hoping that if I restored the system prior to 9/26 I can recover all docs, desktop associated with my administrator profile. I can't do any download, or send email using that laptop. Because it said that I don't have administrator privilege. I am using another laptop which unfortunately, doesn't mirror the contents of the problem laptop.     - back up data to external hard drive I have a external hard drive, 500 gb- It came installed with a software program called memeo- It is ok on the documents, pictures and such, however if I want to make a complete back up I was told to do it with windows xp backup. I looked . at it and I got confused on what way to select where it goes after it is completed. Can someone guide me through the tech stuff so after I make back up where and how to get it on my external hard drive. I was also told by Dell that I really do not need a complete back up, I am confused. I just want to be safe, that is why Iought an external hard drive .     - Windows Explorer Switches Errors Hi, I am trying to use the windows explorer switches, but have a problem combining /root with /select. Individually they work, but together I get problems. Initially, I used: C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /e,/root,c:\ucd,/select,c:\ucd\module. I tried it different ways but usually I get C:\ to open instead. I tried skipping the comma before /select and when I try a file, I get a warning that the path does not exist or is not a directory. If I add an extension to the end of the file it sometimes gives me a File Download box. Other times, like for a jpg file, it actually displays the image in the 2nd pane! If I choose a directory instead of a file, it selects it in the folder pane. Also, in none of these trials does the /root actually work; I can see all the folders above the /root! Except, when I did the .jpg file, the folder structure did not expand, it just showed the normal items. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? These switches are supported in XP aren't they?     - I need help.... Let me just say that I love Windows XP, but the trouble I am having is... About 6 months ago my youngest son down loaded a virus, and I tried to clean the registry files myself but I guess I deleted some files that I shouldn't have. Anyway my computer is giving me a bunch of error messages when I am trying to perform a new install of Windows XP Professional. The error messages are "NTLDR missing" Please press ctl+alt+del to restart your computer. Well I fixed that problem now when I use the 6 different boot disks that I had downloaded. It works this was after I had fixed the NTLDR missing Problem, now the error message that I am getting after I reformat my drive using the boot disks and the restoration cd that came with my computer is something like "sp1.cab file missing or corrupt, windows cannot complete the installation.     - dmserver.dll has a virus, how to install clean version. Hi, The file on my Win XP Pro SP2 PC called dmserver.dll - located here c:\Windows\system32\dmserver.dll - has a virus according to my anti-virus software and confirmed by virusscan.jotti.org where 5 of the AV checkers showed a positive. I've no idea how to restore a clean version of dmserver.dll can someone tell me how please? Extra important info.: Today I installed a new SATA hard disk and a SATA II controller card for it. After installation I pointed the XP 'found new hardware wizard' to the controller card's CD for the drivers, all seemed fine until I went to Control Panel -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management to format the new drive. It was when I tried to access Disk Management that I first got the 'Virus Threat Detected' which meant I could not load the Logical Disk Manager Service, which is the file dmserver.dll, to format the hard disk. Could this just be coincidence? An anti-virus scan of the controller card's drivers CD resulted in 'no threats found'. Please advise, I'm stuck. :( Thanks and regards, etc.. If the PC is locked manually, the PC doesn't restart.     - Resoring XP Boot Ability? I had a dual boot system: XP Pro/Vista Ultimate. Then I ran some buggy = partitioning software. Fortunately I had full backups on an external = USB drive. I restored the Vista partition without a problem. The data = files on the XP Pro partition were restored as well. But the bootable = portion of XP Pro didn't make it. When the system boots I get the = choice of booting from Windows Vista (the default) or the "Earlier = Version of Windows" which is not bootable. What do I need to restore the dual-boot capabilities?     - Defrag and Cpacity mystery A few months ago when I ran defrag I got an error message about something in MCC not operating properly with Diskeeper lite. Since then large amounts of file space are appearing as fragmented (red), even though the report says that the disk is fine. At the same time, the available sapce on my hard drive has decreased to about 10% (from about 40%). I have tried to open MCC but could not decipher what to do with it. I also downloaded the newer trial version for Diskeeper and got the same outcome- including a warning about volume space. Since diskeeper will not let me look at the drive map I cannot see what the files are that are appearing. I am running XP Tablet SP3 on a Lenovo x61T. All updates are current. Any help appreciated.     - Cap locks and multiple selection of lines in Excell In Office 2007, in Excell, I occasionally have the program throw a fit and begin to select 2 or 3 lines or cells. I also notice at the same time, the cap lock key is reversed. When it is locked, I type in lowercase and when it is unlocked, I type in uppercase. I haven't figured out what I did to cause it or how to reverse it. I usually save the document, close the program and re-open or reboot. Other times in just seems to go away after a little while.     - Command problem? When pressing a key, it has to be pressed 2-3 seconds before it displays in the document. This is in at least two different programs. It is possible that the shift key was pressed before the problem began. So I am thinking it may be a command, but not sure since it was someone else's computer who is encountering the problem.     - How to disable drwatson? For trouble shooting purposes, I would like to disable DrWatson. Each time Windows Explorer crashes, it runs and it too crashes.     - Repairing XP for HP devices I have worked with HP to uncover a problem with all of my HP devices ( they got flaky and HP techs made the problem worse and worse until they won't install at all ). I have been advised to re-install Windows XP but 1) my Dell-supplied reinstall disc has no key info; 2) I am on SP2 with countless security updates since original; etc., etc. My only problem is with the HP-related files and drivers. Is there some method to do a repair without regressing? It would take days upon days to get this system back if I uninstall and attempt to reinstall from scratch.     - Copying Folders with No Files I'm trying to make a copy of a folder on my XP SP3 data drive by dragging it and dropping it onto a USB drive connected to the same computer. For some reason that I don't understand, when Windows Explorer encounters a folder with no files in it, it throws up an error and then stops. If I kill the folder and try again, WE throws up on the next folder with no files. Sure, there is no downside in deleting all folders with no files in them, but there are many, many folders on the drive. Please help me understand why WE would choke on copying and folder with no files and whether there is a solution for copying all of the folders (including the zero-byte ones) with Windows Explorer. (I'm aware of utilities that will copy such files and folders, but I'm hoping that there is a setting or configuration with WE that will keep me from having to add another utility.)     - Java update Hi, all knowing. I recieved a notice that I have new update for Java, from Sun co. I have not allowed for updates I thought except from microsoft.     - WinXP SP3 system hangs on standby or hibernate The system, a recent build, is as follows: Biostar TF7025-M2 (aka N68SA-M2T) GeForce 7025/NF630a chipset Athlon 64 X2 3600+ 2 GB DDR2 Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT WD 160GB hard drive WinXP Home v.2002 updated to SP3 Whenever I try to go into standby, I get the message "preparing to stand by ..." but the system just hangs. Changing standby in the BIOS from S1 to S3 makes no difference. I've enabled hibernation in Power Options but that doesn't work either. When I try to go into hibernation I just get "preparing to hibernate ..." and the system hangs again. Everything in the power management section of BIOS looks okay to me, the system has been doing this since it was all defaults and I don't see anything there likely to change it. So it looks like a Windows problem. I found that Microsoft has a hotfix for this problem here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952117 This replaces the ndis.sys and ndiswan.sys files with newer versions (different versions for SP2 and SP3). I downloaded and ran it, it replaced the files all right but only made things a little worse -- gave me a blue screen stop error when I tried standby in S1 mode.     - Adding Show Desktop Icon to Quick Launch Area. Hello everybody. One day I deleted the show desktop icon in the quick launch area by mistake. I wanted to add this button again to its original place but I could not. I could create a shortcut of it on the desktop and drag it to quick launch next to the Start button but although it seemed the same old button it opens the desktop as a seperate folder and did not show me the desktop. The only thing I want is to minimize all the open files and see my desktop with this button. I tried to open and close the show quick launch command from the preferences of task bar but it loaded the other programs i.e explorer button but not show desktop. Can anybody help me to get it back?     - free disk capacity? Dear all, I am using XP professional, It starts to slow down. When I right click on C: properties I find: used space 21GB, free space 6GB and capacity 27GB; and I see the pie chart is almost full of blue against purple. Few months ago it wasn't like that and I haven't installed any new programs since then, also I do not feel that my few programs will take all of this amount of GBs. I tried D.Cleanup, defragmentation, and deleting temporary files by using: Start Run (dllcache, recent, prefetch, temp, %temp% and files in internet properties) and also reduced System Restore settings. I checked C:Windows and found tens (10s) of files start with $NtUninstal+number+$, I tried to check their created date and some of them are very new, I am not sure what modified mean? and know accessed. Honestly I tried and even deleted some of them. I am not sure if should delete them all. I feel the problem increases everyday (everyday I lose more space). Can you help me with any way that help me to find and determine which data (files or folders) that should be removed to free disk capacity?.     - Re: Over 4 million highjacked PC's My little broadband icon in the system tray sometimes sometimes lights up with activity even though I'm not on-line - my wireless router is always on with my PC by the way. I've read that way over 4 million PC's have been highjacked. My question is: how can one tell if one has been highjacked and how can we stop them doing it again?     - ACPI BIOS Errors This is the error message that I get: AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to create an illegal memory OpRegion, starting at address oxffff0000, with a length of 0x10000. This region lies in the Operating system's protected memory address range (0x100000000 - 0x130000000). This could lead to system instability. Geez, you think??? Maybe that's why those BSOD's keep happening. Backstory... Replaced Intel dual- core processor and mobo with DG31PR mobo and Core 2Duo Quad Q6700. Put 4gb RAM on the board, dual channel, nothing but probs. Running XP Pro sp3. Flashed the BIOS on the first board, no change. Second board is already at newest BIOS rev. All suggestions I see are saying it is a BIOS prob, but not according to Intel. Actually, they won't even answer my emails anymore. Can someone help? Oh, btw... I have an X-FI Fatality Gamer sound card. Works great... when it works. It gets uninstalled, or at least stops working, regularly. When you go to device manager, it has a yellow bang, but it is still listed. The only way to get it back is uninstall ALL software for it, uninstall the sound card, and then reinstall the whole mess. I have switched the PCI slots. Geforce 8600gt is PCI-E so there's only 2 PCI slots to try.     - opening sound corrupted? This is a trivial problem, but I wonder if there's something I can do to fix it. Ever since I received my new Dell notebook last month (WinXP, SP2 then but SP3 now), the Start Windows sound begins OK but then has some hesitations in it toward the end.     - My UPS has hijacked Com port 1 and I need it for other thi I have XP Home with SP3. My UPS has hijacked the only serial port I have (com port 1?) and I need to use it for other things. I once was able to disable the UPS on this port but have forgotten how and have been unable to figure it out through trial and error. Any suggestions?     - CHKDSk? I ran CHKDSK on my Fat 32 D:\drive and it left a file fragment in a folder on the drive. I ran CHKDSK by right clicking the drive selecting Properties and then Tools tab and selecting Error Checking. Which notified me that in order to run it will do so after the next reboot.     - system restore Hello: An end user reported something regarding the XP System Restore feature that I am surprised at. He had installed a program on his laptop. Beforehand, he created a Restore Point to use just in case the program created issues. It did. It was "messing up" some other programs of his, so he decided to use that Restore Point in order to get himself back to square one. He claims that, when he restored, it restored his laptop to the previous day rather than simply to the previous point from before installing the program. That does not sound right. I have used System Restore in the past to restore my laptop to a point from just before I installed "bad programs", and I got nothing but good results. Could he have been mistaken, or am I mistaken?     - Audio completely dies on whole system when I arrive at certain web Ok, while listening to audio on my Windows Media player, V 11.0, my audio on the WMP AND my system is completely muted immediatly after arriving at websites such as weatherchannel.com, atlantafalcons.com, or any website that appears to be running some type of Java or extraneous video or graphics....Now, sometimes it will happen and sometimes it won't. But when it does happen, it ALWAYS occurs after I have just arrived at an "offending" site and usually just after IE has just blocked a pop-up. The audio never returns unless I restart my system...Now, sometimes the audio returns after I close IE but it is very rare...I have checked all my connections, cords, etc.....when the problem occurs, it always does so after arriving at certain websites and returns after a restart.... I am to the point that I tend to avoid sites I really want to visit because I'm afraid the audio i'm listening to will be killed and I'll need to restart..... This problem has occurred even after a few repartions of my system!! Problem did not seem to appear after any Windows updates......I'm very VERY sick of this... Please help!     - Automatic Hibernation Ok, I have gone through this before and it is time to rehash it. I hibernate my laptop every night using Shutter.exe. http://www.den4b.com/screenshots.php?project=Shutter and it works fine. By that I mean, not only does it hibernate my laptop at the scheduled time but it also allows my scheduled wake-up tasks to run, which Rundll.exe,powrprof.dll SetSuspendState did not do. It has in its parameters one that if true will DisableWakeEvent. So ,what I need is one of you experts here to tell me exactly what to type in my Scheduled Tasks Run box when setting up the task. If you would look at this page :http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa373201.aspx and show me how to write the command to add the false parameter to DisableWakeEvents. I think it would look something like this Run Box: rundll32.exe,powrprof.dll SetSuspendState and now the switches which I don't know how to do. reinstall XP in view of possibly selling it off. The problem is that the CD
player is inop. Whats the best way to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh
copy of XP? I do have a USB drive large enough for the OEM version of XP.
