Interrupted download SP1 for Vista Business - fix error too!
80070002 error code received - follow fix instructions to turn off update and
empty folders etc which I have done - a number of times as double-check - but
this doesn't work. went to advnaced fix with these instructions which I
followed:
To resolve this problem, remove the download directory, and then visit the
update locations again. To do this, follow these steps:1. Stop the Automatic
Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:a. Click Start, click Run,
type services.msc, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Stop.
c. Minimize the Services snap-in.
2. Rename the SoftwareDistribution directory. To do this, follow these
steps: a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. Type cd %windir%, and then press ENTER.
c. Type ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp, and then press ENTER
But at his point I get "ACCESS DENIED"
I simply cannot believe downloading the presumably vital service pack is
proving impossible - and add this to my blue scrreens at start-up and
mid-programme use that make me hate this operating system - oh if only it
wouldn't be a nightmare to uninstall and get my stable, reliable,

Cleanup problem after KB948109 0x733F Update Error
I had the KB948109 error 0x733F problem-- my original SQL Express 2005 SP2
installation must have been defective. Any way it created a service
MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS which would never start because of not authorized for access
errors regardless of what I did to authorize the user.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you have had an aborted install of SQL you may expect this problem.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So I uninstalled SQL Express completely and reinstalled.
However, it still found, but would not accept, the old service
MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS and would only proceed if I specified "Use Default"
This reinstall then went OK and reinstalled SQL Express creating a new
service MSSQLSERVER.
Now I applied the downloaded KB948109 as per Tornalca and it applied it
successfully to the new valid service MSSQLSERVER but not to the old invalid
service MSSQL$ SQLEXPRESS.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, how do I purge the invalid service MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS from my machine?
Windows Update from 9. july 2008
This update ended - as for others - my Internet access, and removed good old
games (not important - but what else was lost?).
Internet came back after uninstalling ZoneAlarm and reinstalling drivers for
LAN and wireless. Wireless still out.
Now using Windows firewall - but!!.
Some of my collegues using VPN clients (my responsibility) went down too.
NTFS formatting
When (in which version or upgrade or SP) did WinXP support NTFS harddrive
formatting for drive capacities above 132Gb?
My OS cd for WinXP Home was pre-SP2, but I had allowed every upgrade,
update, and patch to run and apply until SP3 was available. I had few
problems.
Somewhere within that history I had replaced my OS drive with a 250Gb and
formatted it with NTFS. When I tried to upgrade to SP3 in April 2008, my OS
failed to reboot, giving me repeated reboot attempts. At the time, the
recommendations I received online was to reformat the drive and reload; I
elected to buy a new drive and reload XP so I could recover my personal
files from the old OS drive, now installed as a slave. However, the
reloaded OS didn't recognize the formatting and began to move FAT references
around on my old drive. I also found that my reloaded OS would not format
above 132Gb. But I see from online message sessions that others have had
the very same problems and have been able to recover almost all of their old
harddrive files, even after the hours-long FAT revisions.
I hope (and pray) for the same experience, but I don't want to proceed until
I can assure myself that the current XP OS will recognize all 250Gb of my HD
and correct the FAT errors accordingly.
How can I assure myself that my present XP OS (WinXP Home now upgraded with
SP3) will do that? What do I look for? Tag: www.shoes1998.com Tag: 263538
Windows Update Issue for XP
I have windows set to do automatic updates and as usual, I recieved an update
sometime back. Ever since then when I would try to go to add or remove
programs, half of my programs would not be there like they normally are. I
did a system restore back about a month and all my programs showed up. Then
just tonight, windows did an automatic update and here I am back to square
one. All my programs are missing again.
What the heck is going on? This should not be occurring because according to
articles I've read when you can't view your programs in add or remove, its
because a registery key has been lost.
So please tell me what I should do? And has anyone else had this problem
could not uninstall the SDS3 because it did not show up on the "update" in
earlier than the initial installation of 7/9 and cannot uninstall the
program. My computer no longer recognizes cd's since this was installed. I
place a cd in the computer and nothing happens, I tried a music cd and
nothing, I tried a game cd - nothing. I am also getting some e-mail delivery
Windows update installing updates over riding my settings
I had the update setting on automatic to be done at 8pm and my time was being
overridden and I was also receiving updates that had no bearing on my system
(updates for XPSP2! not Vista) So I changed it to download but don't install
until I checked them. I was finding updates that were being installed anyway
and sometimes twice back to back. ie - that fateful Tues in March with KB
938371 that took away all my USB drives. Now I have changed it to just
notify me of updates and I will decide which ones to install and the stupid
updates are being updated and installed anyway.
Is anyone else having this problem? I am sick of Microsoft deciding which
updates I need. I know a lot of them were in preparation for SP1 but I never
did get that as an update. Downloaded and installed myself with the help
from Microsoft and I had no problem. Sorry - BTP I don't know any thing else
to do but cut them off completely which is certainly enticing at this point.
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks, Jody Tag: www.shoes1998.com Tag: 263437
Updates fail
For the past month, every time I shut down the computer that I use a lot
except the last 2 were I tried to update manually. Those 2 had the error
code: 0x8020000E. How do I fix this?
Also, I have heard much about holding off on the XP ser. pk. 3, by Window's
Install of KB921896 fails with 0x643 and corrupts my SQL Server.
Problem: Attempts to auto install KB921896 fail with error code 0x643. SQL
Server is now corrupted and won't start, complaining in a pop-up on machine
reboot that "Your SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been
tampered with (Could not open SQLEVN70.RLL). Please uninstall then re-run
setup to correct this problem." My system is running Windows 2003 Server
Enterprise Edition SP 2.
Background: Last week, my Sharepoint (WSS 3.0) site stopped working because
it "couldn't connect to the configuration database". When I looked in the
Event Logs, I saw that SQL Server had been failing for a few minutes nearly
every day since Feb 16, 2008. On July 3, 2008 it failed again, twice this
time, and couldn't recover. Ever SQL Server failure in the log was preceded
by a run of MsiInstaller. Looking at my Windows Automatic Updates history, I
discovered that nearly every day since Feb 16, 2008, Windows Automatic
Updates had been unsuccessfully attempting to install KB921896 (SQL Server
2005 SP2). And on July 3, it tried twice. After that, my SQL Server
completely died.
Debugging: I downloaded the service pack to install it manually. I walked
through the wizard, and the install died midway, asking to send the following
log files to MS:
* C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup
Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\Redist9_Hotfix_KB921896_msxml6.msi.log
* C:\Windows\summary.txt
* C:\Windows\Hotfix\hotfix.log
Upon inspection of those files, I find that the first one does not exist. In
fact, there is no LOG subdirectory tree under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\90\Setup Bootstrap.
Here are the highlights from the short summary.txt file:
If I read that correctly, it looks like there might be some registry
corruption. It also makes me nervous that when I now compare this SQL Server
installation to one working on another computer I see in the "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server" directory only an "80" and "90" subdirectory and
no, say, "MSSQL.1", exists like in my other install. I'm hesitant to simply
re-install the product as recommended because that means reinstalling
SharePoint (since that's where my SQL Server install came from), and I don't
what other havoc that might wreak. Right now, I just need my website data
back.
Any suggestions you have are welcome. My apologies in advanced if this has
already been covered in another thread. I sampled the many entries regarding
this install in the discussion group but didn't see a solution for this. If
there is one, feel free to point me to the thread.
SOLUTION: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack
So everyone is getting a different message or error code. In order to help
EVERYONE with their unique problem simply go to "program files," "microsoft
SQL Server," "90," "Setup Bootstrap," "LOG," "Hotfix," and "Summary" (note:
just select the normal Summary with no numbers in the name). Now a window
will pop up...look towards the middle left for a line that says "Error
Description" under the "Product Installation Status." The product should be
"SQL Server Database Services 2005."
Now all one needs to do is correct whatever it is in the error description.
For example, mine said "Error Description : MSP Error: 28062 SQL
Server Setup cannot install files to the compressed or encrypted folder:
c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\. To continue, make sure that your
installation directories are not compressed or encrypted, or specify a
different directory, and then run SQL Server Setup again."
So I just went to Program Files and decompressed my Microsoft SQL Server
folder and voila!! it worked perfectly. To decompress just right click on
the Microsoft SQL Server folder, click on properties, and uncheck the box
next to Compress (you may have to go to Attributes and click on Advanced
first though).
Another person posted that this could also be a message:
The error description would be: "SQL Server Setup cannot upgrade the
specified instance because the previous upgrade did not complete. Start the
Remote Registry service and go to Add/Remove Programs, select the Change
button for Microsoft SQL Server 2005, and then select SQL instance [2] and
complete the setup."
There are probably more errors than the two i listed above. Just fix the
one that your computer specifies and all should work out in the end.
P.S. I also find it very lame that Microsoft could not test these updates
properly first before sending it out to its millions of users. Just shows
how ignorant this big company has become after people have become dependent
on it. Luckily more users are switching to Macs. I would too, but again,
there are some programs only found in Windows that are essential to my work
and therefore the big company has made me dependent on them again....... Tag: www.shoes1998.com Tag: 263385
WGA problems
I've been using Vista since February without issue (including a reinstall in
April due to a failed HD). But, after an update failed two days ago, I've
been getting text at the bottom right of my screen that says my installation
is not Genuine. Clearly it is. I can get the text to go away if I go to
microsoft.com/genuine and activate windows that way then log out and log back
in; however, sometimes the text comes back. I also tried installing Microsoft
Calculator Plus because they have some checks to make sure your system is
Genuine before you can install it, and the install went flawlessly. Is
anybody else having these problems? I have since retried that update that
failed and it worked the second time. I'm really tearing my hair out having
1) First time I saw this, I first decided that this one was the one too =
much and that this time I would NOT perform this new layer of stupid =
useless complication.
I recall that WU (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com), while officially =
claimed to SIMPLIFY the Windows update process, actually ADDED =
complications, to the point that it regularly stopped working on =
millions PCs.
Plenty people complained, MS would come with complicated workarounds =
that worked 2 times out of 3. Fortunately during all these years I =
applied a very simple trick that worked 100% of the times. Any try to =
suggest or only to show it to MS ended in the usual contempt for =
customers and refusal without knowing - in their well known acute case =
of NIH syndrome (Not Invented Here).
Then came MU (http://update.microsoft.com), officially claimed to =
simplify the update process for ALL the microsoftware(TM) on your =
computer. The previous flaw was partly corrected, but continued to =
plague many; fortunately my trick above continued to work 100% of the =
cases, including the ones when MU didn't. This situation worked =
flawlessly for a couple years.
Now MS not only adds another layer of gratuitous complications, but =
requires that THE CUSTOMER does the work FOR WHICH HE PAID MICROSOFT!!
Why doesn't MS make simpler, with a smaller number of simpler services, =
launching them without requiring the user to manually do the work? Is it =
so hard to, *at the right time*, ask the user his permission?
So I REFUSED this time to be once more the PAYING SLAVE of stupid bad =
workers at Redmont (I badly miss the small swift obliging efficient =
"micro-soft" Albuquerque company... or even the 1993 MS of Win 3.1 for =
WG). In ancient eras slaves didn't get paid, but at least they had not =
to pay!
2) After a few weeks I stupidly yielded and did the work requested by =
the MU page (make sure the 3 services "Automatic Updates", "Background =
Intelligent Transfer Service", "Event Log", are started; they were =
already). Unfortunately this didn't solve the problem. Hence I stopped =
visiting MU (My previous trick was, in this case, irrelevant, so I =
didn't try it 1st; only when writing this did I just verify that it =
actually doesn't work).
3) Today I visit again MU and I find that MS still didn't fix this =
service. I stop visiting it and keep my XP SP2 like it is. I am just =
reporting FWIW, just in case it meets a positive person at MS or in its =
NGs (in case there is one left).
4) OU (http://officeupdate.microsoft.com) also fails on the same PC, =
that has XP Pro, Office 2000 Pro.
5) The above is about my XP Pro laptop. MU and OU still work flawlessly =
on my good old W2KSP4 desktop. Yes I know, Most Vocal Posters will blame =
my laptop without thinking or searching any other hypothesis - this is =
one more reason why I didn't report earier and why I now stopped hoping =
any help from these once helpful NGs.
Windows Update
The other night my son failed to run the Windows Update when he was shutting
down. After that we were no longer able to use our browser. It just fails to
connect to the internet. I have run extensive tests through Qwest and the
router seems to be fine. The network shows that is connected . . . . . any
ideas? Tag: www.shoes1998.com Tag: 263261
Windows Not booting After recent update.
After the latest update patch for Vista, my Computer hangs during the boot. I
have already rolled back to the 07/07 update and was able to get the computer
booted up, then ran the update again. Is this a known issue with the newest
update patch?
I'm running AVAST! as my virus software with no firewall other than Vistas. Tag: www.shoes1998.com Tag: 263256
Can I buy cheap Brother printer cartridges at www.ink4less.com?
I have a Gateway computer with the following: 1) a 1400-MHz Pentium 4
processor, 2) 256 MB of RAM, and 3) 40 GB of hard-drive space.
The computer is running Windows Millennium Edition (ME).
A month ago, I bought a Brother MFC-240C printer. This is a
multifunction device: printer, copier, fax, and scanner.
Recently, my "starter" yellow-ink cartridge ran out of ink, and one
other cartridge is about to do the same.
At the Best Buy store where I bought the printer, Brother cartridges
are sold for $13.50 each. I believe that these are the LC51B, LC51Y,
LC51C, and LC51M cartridges.
Well, I have discovered the website known as www.ink4less.com This
website seems to sell these cartridges for $4.21 each.
Here is the url:
http://ink4less.com/sitetools/product.php/cat/4209
So, is this some kind of trick or scam? Can I really buy genuine
Brother cartridges for only $4.21?
Thanks for any help you guys can give me. Tag: www.shoes1998.com Tag: 263255
KB948109 Woes
I have two SQL Server 2005 Standard servers - running on Server 2003
Standard x86.
After running to the Microsoft Update site last night, I selected the SQL
high-priority update KB948109 along with the other Server 2003-centric
updates. All updates were successful except for the SQL update. I then tried
downloading the KB file directly from Download Centre and ran it from the C:
drive. Again, the update failed.
After rebooting both servers, SQL services would not start. Here is what was
done by the onsite DBA to fix the problems:
It seems that one of the patches applied to the SQL Servers (KB948109)
attempted to access the MSSQLSYSTEMRESOURCE database. This database holds
all of the objects in SQL Server and is a new "database" for SQL Server
2005. The items that are in this database were previously held in the
MASTER database but this is no longer the case. I say this is a "database"
because it's a hidden database that's not managed in the normal way (can't
access it through Management Studio, can't back it up using maintenance
plans, etc.).
The issue appears to be the fact that we have put the data and log files for
all of our databases in the non-default location of C:\Programs Files\etc...
Of course this is a Microsoft recommended practice to distribute the data
and log files and something we've been doing since SQL Server 7. We saw
this issue first with the application of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 when
we were building the server. This appears to be a known issue and is in my
opinion a huge bug in the application of patches and service packs. This
was not an issue with SQL Server 7 or SQL Server 2000 but of course SQL 2005
is a different beast.
Specifically what appeared to happen is the patch affected the log file of
that database causing it to be a different version than the data file (the
log file showed a modified date of December 2007 which should be
impossible - we installed SQL Server in late May). This means that the .MDF
file in D:\SQLData was modified differently than the .LDF file in
E:\SQLLogs. I found that you cannot restore this database in the normal
way - you have to restore these files from a file-based backup. We don't
currently have this (but that will change immediately). However, I found a
.LDF file sitting in the same directory as the .MDF file with the same
modified dates. So, I renamed the "broken" .LDF file and copied the file
from the D: drive to the E: drive and voila, the problem is fixed. Didn't
have to restore any files so there should not be any issue of losing any
objects in SQL Server.
I still can't fathom how this update was deemed "ready for public
consumption".
Good luck. Tag: www.shoes1998.com Tag: 263238
Updates & Hotfixes & no Internet connection
OK. A lot of things got messed on my computer
Almost every Hotfix and Security update for XP SP2 was gone (not listed in
Add/Remove Programs) and Automatic Updates just would not work
So I searched for help and did the following:
I added BITS and WUAUSERV to the netsvcs key in the Regsitry under
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost
That got Automatic Updates working again and it wanted me to install Windows
Installer 3.1. My msi.dll file at the time was version 3.0 something. I
attempted to install 3.1 several times, but it always failed, even when I
downloaded and used the executable file. I was unable to uncheck the checkbox
for 3.1 in the Update list because it was grayed out.
So in my Windows\System32 folder I renamed Msi.dll msi.old, Msiexec.exe
msiexec.old and Msihnd.dll msihnd.old, restarted my computer and then
attempted to install Windows Installer 3.1. I believe it failed to install
once again and I never received the restart computer prompt. It is currently
listed as being installed in Add/Remove Programs, eventhough the System log
in Event Viewer says that that specific attempt failed
However, it seemed to work as other updates began to download. It froze at
93% so I restarted my computer and then all of the updates were downloaded
and ready to be installed. (My settings download the updates, but let me
choose when to install them) There were 91 total updates!
I decided to install all 91. After about an hour or so they were done and I
was prompted to restart. Once I did, I was unable to connect to the Internet.
My
cable modem was fine and I was successfully able to use the tracert command
with the DOS prompt, but I could not get any sites to load or check my e-mail
with OE. The only problem I saw in the System log in Event Viewer was a DHCP
warning
I did a System Restore to the point before the 91 updates were installed and
my connection was back.
I guess the updates will download again once I restart, but I don't want to
install them. My best bet is probably installing them one at a time or maybe
just a few. I don't want to install everything just to lose my connection
again. This is why I download but don't install. Some of these updates caused
me problems in the past. Just have to figure out which ones may cause me to
lose my connection or cause a DHCP error Tag: www.shoes1998.com Tag: 263231
Windows could not search for new updates. - Vista
I am having a problem with Windows Update. When i go to click on the "check
for updates" button I get the message "Windows could not search for new
updates. Error found: Code 80080005"
I cant find anywhere on the knowledge database that can tell me what that
error code means and how to fix it. Can you help...thanks. Tag: www.shoes1998.com Tag: 263230
