SP3 borks Plextor DVD drive
My son has a fairly new system that includes a Plextor PX-755SA DVD drive on
a Win XP Home system. I'm more than happy with xp home and seen no need to
install Vista at the time of the build. It worked great until he downloaded
and installed SP3. It went from burning dvd's at 12-16X to .7-1. After
spending half the night downloading firmware, software, and driver updates
from plextor, all without any good results, i instructed him to do a system
restore. He notified me today that the drive is back to it's previous
performance level. I dont know if MS released this patch in hopes of causing
XP users to switch to Vista, but i wouldn't be suprised.
I also installed SP3 on my XP Pro system, but i haven't had a chance to
check and see if my system is suffering any ill affects from the update as
yet. Thank god for current backups. Tag: windows update doesn't stop running Tag: 255662

Getting notified for download but not to install-AutoUpdate-non-ad
I am trying to allow non-admin users access to receive windows update via
automatic updates without much success.
I have a SUS server that I am using for our LAN users but do not want to use
it for remote employees due to bandwidth issues.
I configured a group policy for the remote employees with notify to download
and notify to install and allow non-administrators to receive update
notifications
They are getting notified to download but they are never notifed to install.
The event viewer shows the file is ready to install but states I need to log
in as an admin.
I was thinking of configuring the automatic updates to auto download and
schedule install but there are some updates I do not want them to install
until it is tested.
Any ideas on why I can not install is appreciated? Tag: windows update doesn't stop running Tag: 255644
The icon disappears before I can download updates
Hi
All of a sudden after installing the AVG8 Free edition - the icon
for my updates appears then it disappears again before I can
update. I have my automatic updates set at "notify me but don't
automatically download". I have always been able to download
without any trouble but now as I mentioned the icon vanishes.
Do I perhaps have to disable the Resident Shield for AVG. I don't
know how to disable the full AVG8. (By the way I'm on dial-up.)

Unable to boot up-Windows XP
I tried to boot up my computer this morning and I received a blue screen
telling me that a problem has been detected and and Windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to my computer. I received the following technical
information:
Stop: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x805c575B, 0xF88AE1E8, xF88ADEE4)
I tried rebooting and following the instructions in the safe mode, but it
would not even let me in the safe mode, it won't let me do anything. It
worked fine the night before and I did not download anything or install any
new programs, the only thing that I know of there was a virus scan done.
Can anyone give me any help????

XP SP3 Downloading and Installing Probs....Help Me Please!!
I have tried numerous times to update Service Pack 3 for Windows XP Home
Edition but everytime I start the download and accept the license agreement,
it just stays on "preparing to download." I uninstalled my previous
anti-virus program because I have been having problems with installing
updates from Microsoft and downloaded Windows Live OneCare last night,
thinking it may solve my problem. This morning before I left for work around
4:30am EST, I attempted to try downloading it again because Windows Live
OneCare prompted me to do so and I am still at work but have called home to
ask my sister if it downloaded and IT IS STILL ON THE SAME PAGE!!! What am I
doing wrong?! I have had NO PROBLEM downloading any other updates! In fact,
my automatic updates went ahead and installed the other updates for me but it
won't installl SP3. I will greatly appreciate if somebody would please
assist me in my troubles. I am normally very intelligent when it comes to
computers but this thing has me dumbfounded.

Can't Install SP 3; Can't Restore SP 2 Either
I'd rather have a virus than have to deal with Windows updates.
I have XP Window Media Center OS.
When I tried to install SP 3 it went all the way to the end and just
failed without any excuse or error message. It just failed.
I tried all the suggestions on note 950718, and they all failed. Went
thru the whole process about 6 times with the same result. After
failure my network access was gone. It took a day to restore it.
I tried to reinstall SP 2, but that didn't work.
Window Media Center still doesn't work. When I try to start it I get an
ehshell.exe error message to the effect that the file is only partially
signed or corrupted.
I appear to be stuck half way between SP 2 and 3. My Dell XPS M140 did
not come with any Windows installation disks, so I can't reinstall.
I just want to get back they way I was before SP 3 screwed my computer
up. I have no plans to ever try to intall SP 3 on this computer again--
I'd rather hava a virus attack.

Can't reboot in safe mode, keyboard arrows won't work
I have a user that installed SP3 on her home computer, but it did not go well..
After the installation and first reboot, a blue screen was briefly
displayed. There was a "click" and the PC rebooted again. Then began an
endless reboot cycle. She could never manage to read the message on the blue
screen, but it seemed to begin with "If this is your first time running
Windows..."
She was able to press F8 and the Safe Mode selection screen was displayed,
but she could not move the cursor to highlight "Safe Mode"--it stayed at
"normal" Windows. She tried this several times.
Anyone have any suggestions with this?
Just a note...I haven't seen any major problems with any of our office

Re: SP3
Follow-up:
If you're referring to http://www.soft32.com/download_123572.html, this
"editor's review" is referring to:
1. A risky download of a beta build of WinXP SP3 that's...
2. Hosted here
http://www.soft32.com/Download/Free/Microsoft_Windows_XP_Service_Pack_3/4-123572-1.html
(NOT by Microsoft!); and...
3. The download page contains the following caveat:
<QP>
This download may include additional applications bundled with the
software's installer file. Third-party applications bundled with this
download may record your surfing habits, deliver advertising, collect
private information, or modify your system settings... [Now you know why I
called it a "risky download"! <wink>]
</QP>
So, it's not talking about WinXP SP3 final as released by or
downloaded/installed from Microsoft.

Unable to install Security Update for Windows XP (KB920213)
Hi, I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition due to a missing/corrupted
Windows file. I have downloaded and installed all the updates on Windows
Update.
But I have problems downloading this particular update, Security Update for
Windows XP (KB920213). When I try to download it from the Windows Update
website, the following error message appears: 'Downloading Security Update
for Windows XP (KB920213) (update 5 of 10)... failed!'
So, I decided to download the actual update from the Microsoft website. The
file I downloaded is 'WindowsXP-KB920213-x86-ENU'. But when I tried to
install it, an error message appears, telling me that it could not locate
this file 'update_SP2QFE.inf' from my computer. When I tried to locate the
file, there were many hits within C:\windows, but the folders were named with
different letters which I couldn't make out or find.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am currently using Windows XP Home
Edition, with the basic Windows Firewall. I do not have any anti-virus or
spyware programs or other firewalls installed yet.
Quite ironically, I had to reinstall Windows in the first place because I
installed XP SP 3 and it caused one of my Windows files to be corrupted or

It is May 12 and Vista SP1 is nowhere?
We've got 2 identical Sony VIAO laptops (VGN-CR490 - T8300, 2.4Ghz, 3GB RAM,
250GB HD) with Vista Home Premium, purchased in March, all updates went fine
so far, no tech problems, but SP-1 is nowhere to be found.
I just keep checking the windows update, but it never indicated SP1 anywhere.
I figured that it may take some time to show up, but today is May 12 and
still nothing on either of the two laptops.
The auto-update is activated, there is no driver conflicts of any kind so
far, all updates were OK, there is no "update-blocking" software or setting
anywhere, so theoretically it should be here by now and installed, right???
So, how long do we have to wait before it shows up and installs?

unrefreshed version of XP with IE6 browser and various other external
security products to keep me safe...hopefully.
This updateis the crappiest thing I have ever downloaded and you should be
ashamed of yourselves for foisting this thing on customers via your auto
update feature.
Perhaps this is to encourage formerly happy XP users to move to Vista :-((
I wonder how you propose to compensate users for all the hassles this update
has caused? Tag: windows update doesn't stop running Tag: 255425
Trouble installing WIN XP SP3
Hello
I have two desktop computers and one laptop, all running Windows XP. I
successfully downloaded and installed WIN XP SP3 on one desktop and the
laptop. Iâ??m having trouble with the other desktop.
SP3 seems to download with no problems, but does not install properly.
Before beginning the installation, I close all programs, including the
screensaver. The installation begins normally, proceeding through the
following steps: Inspecting â?? Creating Third Party Driver List â?? Performing
inventory â?? Checking product key â?? Running processes before install. It
stays on this last task for nearly three minutes, and then, without warning
or notice, the computer reboots; thereby aborting the installation.
Iâ??ve tried it at least half a dozen times, with the same result.
Any advice would be most appreciated.
Cheers,

XP SP3 - "Limited or no connectivity"
Yesterday I updated my Windows XP professional on my laptop using automatic
updates and Service pack 3 was installed. After this installation took place,
the message "limited or no connectivity" kept poping up and connection to
internet failed. I checked internet connection on another PC to be sure that
the problem was not from my internet service provider.
I tried to reinstall network adapters drivers but the message "limited or no
connectivity" kept appearing. I also attempted to system restore to a
checkpoint before the service pack 3 was installed but still failed.
Can anyone suggest a solution for this problem, please. thanks in advance
for your help. Tag: windows update doesn't stop running Tag: 255420

DO NOT INSTALL SP3 IF.......
Do not install SP3 if you have a AMD processor OF ANY KIND! whether you have
bought the system from a shop, or built the system yourself. There is a
conflict between SP3 and the AMD processor! I dont know how, but it is
currently affecting millions of people around the world with many more
appearing every day.
Luckily for most, it is just the continual reboot cycle or the continual
BSOD's but for some (i being one of them), it has caused a more severe
problem. On the system i have just built, i had a brand new, straight out of
the box hard drive. I installed XP Pro SP2 with no problems and it was
running fine for roughly 1 week. Then i get the windows update message that
SP3 is available, so as any computer user who is worth his salt would do, i
read all the available information on SP3 to see what it would contain and
try and identify any risks with installing SP3. After not being able to find
anything i decided that it would be safe to install.......... however, upon
installing the SP, i started to get the continual reboot cycle, after 2
reboots, my computer then came up with the error STRAIGHT after the P.O.S.T
screen that there was no valid system disk replace disk and retry! I checked
my bios and that no longer detected the drive, i tried to access dos using a
dos boot disk and searching for the drive that way, all to no avail. I have
since contacted a computer repair company who told me that the boot sector
had been deleted, finding this a bit unusual, i took the HDD to another
computer repair company for a second opinion, only to be told the same thing!
Therefore meaning that SP3 on some AMD systems has the ability to delete the
boot sector. Which has cost me, not only in time wasted, but in money as i
have now had to buy another HDD to replace the one that is about now as much
use as a paper weight! although this does add some small novelty factor to
any computer desk, it serves to remind me that Microsoft OBVIOUSLY have not
tested the SP on a system containing an AMD processor, which is a bit naive
considering that a lot of people who cannot afford a intel processor go down
the AMD route, WHICH THEREFORE renders them liable for the costs of any parts
damaged by their software due to negligence on their part. So for all those
out there wanting to know if SP3 is ok to use, my advice to them is, if you
have an AMD system, DO NOT INSTALL SP3
