service pack 3 router issue
after installing service pack 3 i cannot connect to the internet via my
router i am running windows xp and i am using an edimax adsl2+ 4 port router
. i have tried several times to reinstall the update and the router but to no

Have Win Updates set to notify but not download.
Lately, when I choose to download, the update icon disappears and
updates are not downloaded.
At first I thought the server was busy (although I usually click
download as soon as notified) but this has happened a number of times
now.

i just reformatted my computer... my computer froze up during the update. i

2 problems: When automatic updates are installing, the machine slows to a
crawl (in need of a memory update, but that's another story). Also, the
update settings are configured to just notify me, NOT automatically install,

After installing Service Pack 3 my HP 7780 now prints in reverse. I have no
idea how to fix except to uninstall Serive Pack 3. Had printing something

Windows XP SP3 error
I have tried installing SP3 at least 5 times now. Each time it fails in the
middle of the install. When I check on the update page as to why I get this
"Error Code: 0x80070005" I think it has something to do with my registry, but
am not sure. So I have no idea really how to fix the problem. Further
either indirectly (because I don't have SP3) or simply the because the error
is effecting other things, many of the important updates I have tried to
install since SP3 have failed as well. It seems most have this error

Service Pack 3 Installation Problems
After finally downloading the Service Pack 3 update, I now find myself unable
to install it. While scanning my computer, and copying files prior to the
actual installation, I always end up getting an error message saying that a
specific file is not where it's supposed to be. It's always a different
file. In addition, and I believe this is the main problem, along with the
error message, I am always knocked out of having Administrator priviledges.
My computer also acts strangely at this point, with me being unable to open
certain apps. In addition, when I shut down, instead of seeing the normal
blue shut down window with the icons, I get the old style gray drop down
menu. This has also happened after I've shut down my anti-virus program. I
am running XP Home edition, and am also the only user registered on this
computer. I am at wits end, because I have been trying to get this done for
several days now, and have been stuck on the install problem for the entire

Vista SP1 Update
I continually told updates are available and it's always SP1. I install it
(I think) following all admin prompts and accepting licenses. When viewing
the progress it shows the preparing to install, shows it downloading (though
it always shows 0% and then switches to "Installing update 1 of 1...WVSP1
(KB936330). Then I get the welcome screen and then the accept the license
page. I accept it click next and then install. The windows update screen
suddenly shows the update was successful. There is no shutting down of
windows or taking an hour or more as the prompt screen warns. And then a few
minutes later I am alerted that there are new updates available and the whole
silly process starts again.
I did call support but the guy wanted me to uninstall my anti-vrius, etc.
and then be on the internet! Really not interested in that solution
especially since he said he wasn't sure it would fix things anyway.

Nor can I install .net 1.1 nor, 2.0 by downloading the .exe file from

I have offcourse searchd around for any clues, but nothing have worked so far.
This computer belongs to someone else, so I cant say for sure what they have
done to make it like this.
But it seems to me like some applications dont have the right to overwrite,
or work with existing folders. as the installer for .NET tells me in the
middel of the installations (error code: 1713) that it can't create the
catalog: C:\Programfiler\Internet Explorer\ (it already there, and
"Programfiler" would be the same as "Program Files" on an english windows XP)
Seems to me that it somehow have lost the rights to alter some files, or
something in that direction.
Altho, all the users I have tryed this with, is a part of te Administrator
groupe.

Internet Explorer hanging up on closure
Running Vista, Internet Explorer will not shut down and hangs up when go to
close. When cursor is brought over tray, turns into circular working pattern.

Slow response when opening files (Excel, Word, etc.)
Am running XP Professional, SP3. Recently, when I go into Start, Documents,
and double click to open Excel(both 2007 & 2003 files, Word 07 & 03, etc.)
the files seem to just go into a non-responsive mode for extended time(20
secs up to 1 min) before opening. If I go into the application first, then
open the file, it opens immediately.
Have Office 2007 installed on system.

Windows Update files won't install
On a W2K-Pro SP4 machine - logged in as administrator - when I try to
make Windows Update work, Windows Update appears to scan my machine
correctly and seems to download the necessary updates. All of the
updates then fail to install.
I can print a list of all of the updates that I seem to have downloaded
but don't know what else to look for and don't know what needs to be

Windows Installer problem
I'm having trouble with the Silverlight update referred to in another
question. I tried to follow PA Bear's suggestion of deleting Silverlight and
reinstalling it, but I couldn't because Windows installer was absent--at
least that's the only option I could come up with (since I wasn't running in
Safe Mode). I tried downloading it, but was told I didn't need it, since the
one I had was later than the one I was trying to download. I still can't
remove Silverlight, so I can't get away from that update problem--I just seem
to be getting myself in deeper. Any ideas?

How do I get automatic Windows updates if that feature is greyed out in Automatic Updates in System Properties?
My office computer(XP, SP3) is of course part of a network.
Through mid-June, it always received Windows updates, which I would
then mostly approve for installation (like 98% of them).
This week I noticed that the June 13 or whatever the date was update
was the last series I'd had. So I went to Windows Update and
downloaded (guessing) 20 updates in three different stages, with
reboots necessary after each stage.
I cannot reset my computer for automatic updates. Those settings are
greyed out in the Automatic Updates tab of the system properties. And
whether I use Windows Update or Microsoft Update, I don't have an
option shown to select any flavor of automatic updates.
I'm geek enough that I don't mind just checking for updates manually
(a process made kind of easy by the fact that my home XP computers all
get automatic updates that I manually install, reminding me to do it
at work). But I'd love to know how to restore the auotmatic update
download/reminder system I had previously.

I'm sick of Windows Update asking me to install SilverLight!!
It is ignoring its setting not to ask anymore.

Removing persisted download
I am running WinXP Pro SP3. I have Automatic update option of notify before
download or install. I selected a single offered update (IE7) for download.
It has been three days and Automatic update has attempted to download the
update over 50 times. In windowsupdate.log I found no errors at all but
instead each attempt ends with "PerUpdate regulated can NOT download." which
I understand to mean that the servers are too busy.
OK, I am tired of waiting (who knows how long until download actually
happens). I went to the Internet Explorer site and downloaded the IE7 update
myself. I would now like to install it but I want to clear out Automatic
update so that I don't get another copy of the IE7 file on my computer. How

MsWorks 8 update for vista
ok i downloaded the MsWorks patch thingy from microsoft the eng usa cab one
when i install it i get an error 1305 i have no idea what this means. please

MsWorks Update error U all Know what it is
i have a windows update regarding microsoft works 8 and i get an error
because i dont have the c.d. for it.It came preinstalled .i came aross a
download from microsoft to download and install it. i did download the
eng.usa cab one and i followed instructions i put it on my desktop when i
click on it i can see installer and then the allow and cancel screen but
after i allow it nothing happens. Once i saw an error code 1406 or something
like that and it failed. this is a real pain because when ever i turn on my
pc i have this update. is there a way to diable just that update so it
wouldnt come on anymore. If anyone has any suggestions id appreciate it

Some websites not loading
I'm not computer savvy by any means but here's my problem after installing
sp3-when I try to go to the Food Network website, it will open a window but
then it is blank with a "done" message" and nothing ever shows up. This

update errors
Update errors should generate an error message to be sent to the update centre.
If I hide an critical security update because it creates an error I don't
waht to be told every day that I have. Rather I want a response from Update
saying that my action has generated an investigation which will find a

Okay I get the error message and I've looked at the KB and the i've tried all
the suggestions people have said on here (the ose thing, manual service thing
and the repairing onenote except that wouldn't work so i'm thinking it may be
corrupted in some way?). I can't reinstalling onenote because it came
preinstalled on my laptop so i have no cd and i have no idea what to do now..

I built a new PC today. Running Vista Home Premium and brand new copy of
Office 2007. All Brand new, both the OS and Office application. New HDD ...
Windows Update tells me now that I should be downloading an Important Update
for Office 2003 (SP3)....WHY??? I am running a fresh 2007...
I have installed NO viewers of any description...no Visio viewer etc...
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

SP3 has blocked incoming email
Yesterday Microsoft sent me Service Pack 3.
Since then, my main email account with Yahoo has received no emails. I
would normally have had about 15.
The error message says:-

I sent myself one using a spare account, with no problems.
Can you tell me how to fix this, or can I roll back to before SP3 was
introduced. I like to keep up to date but want to receive emails even more.

I cannot play my DVD in my computer
I cannot play my DVD in my computer, even cannot open to view the content,
before it was opening and playing well, now i can't open even a blank DVD,

Error 0x80072EFD...NO FIREWALL
I am NOT running a firewall...well, Windows Firewall, but I've already tried
to shut that off and it still comes up with the error. This is my plain old
simply home computer..no network, nothing fancy. I'm not all that computer
savvy, so plain layman terms would be very helpful.
This is driving me insane.

Install Failure of KB955305 (Silverlight Update)
Anyone encountering the following:
1) Run Windows Update
2) Identifies KB955305 needs to be installed
3) Fails to install KB955305
4) Reboot Machine
5) Run Windows Update
6) KB955305 no longer in recommended install list but of course failure
entry is in the Update History
