windows installer 3.1 fails to install

Hi all,

I am using windows xp home sr2. Recently I had to re-activate windows.
after I did windows installer 3.1 is trying to install. I get the updates
are ready to be downloaded in my system tray. When I go to install it it
fails every time I try. I downloaded the program onto my hard drive and
tryed running it with the same results. Without that I can't get any other
updates. Can this be fixed? Help!

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation [ignore the title]

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

I got my problem fixed by using the dial a fix utility.
