Vista SP1 Pack
Hi
I downloaded and installed the Vista SP1 Pack. However after a few reboots
the system started checking the files (xxxx of 72xxx files) and keeps
stopping at a file witht he generic name of sbs_corexxxx.dll (number is
around 5400). Anyone able to give me insight on what is happening?
i had to use my Vista installer cd to to repair my install twice before i
got my previous settings back.. otherwise i would have had to reinstall vista
from the cd and would have lost all my documents =(
Im just alittle apprehensive now to try the SP1 update again.
Pls help where able thanks. Tag: vista update Error 0x80070059 Tag: 250390

Need Help With IPs to Authorize Windows Update
I'm having some problems with firewall authorizations for Windows Update
access in a DMZ. In general, I have had good luck getting access to
Windows Update when you authorize passage of HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP to these
networks:
131.107.0.0 / 16
207.46.0.0 / 16
64.4.0.0 / 18
65.52.0.0 / 14
In addition, I normally authorize these URLs for both http: and https:
*.microsoft.com
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
download.windowsupdate.com
The problem I am having is that occasionally the DNS name
"download.windowsupdate.com" resolves to some IPs on a huge network from the
Limelight load balancing farm. When the client behind the firewall
resolves that DNS to an IP, it then connects to the IP and the IP does NOT
reverse back to the DNS name download.windowsupdate.com. Instead it
resolves to some arbitrary name at the Limelight Network. So the firewall
has no way of knowing that the connection is authorized. Further
complicating all of this, download.windowsupdate.com does not always resolve
to the Limelight load balancers. Microsoft appears to have these IPs
pointing to load balancers all over the world. Some of the IPs I saw the
download.windowsupdate.com domain name resolve to:
208.111.148.50
8.12.217.124
192.78.223.126
209.84.2.124
etc
Microsoft provides a set of DNS names to use with the ISA firewall, and
naturally that doesn't work for the IPs above because they don't reverse to
Microsoft domain names.
No way do I want to authorize the entire Limelight load balancing network
into my DMZ. There are a huge number of IPs, and those are probably
associated with many hundreds of different organizations. When I do a
whois on the IPs Microsoft is using, nothing in the huge range of IPs
returned suggests which subset of the range is reserved for Microsoft use.
It would be really really nice for those of us who actually think about
security if Microsoft would publish openly the range of IPs it is using for
Windows Update. Failing that, I am open to ideas here about how can one
set up a reasonable set of firewall rules to securely connect to this
wideranging set of IPs.

All MI updates fail to install
I upgraded to XP. I registered. I was able to download one update which I
think makes it possible for me to update. After I restarted my machine, I
ran the MS updates. It found many. When I click install, every download fails
to install. I even chose a couple by themselves to install under the custom
install and those failed as well. Is there a particular order? If so, I
would think MS would be smart enough to install them in that order.
Any help would be appreciated.

SP1 not available at Microsoft Update
I'm running Vista Home Premium, up-to-date, with no hidden updates; I've
got scads of room on my drive; and I'm in Canada ...if that matters.
I have read that Microsoft will be pushing out SP1 in April, but that if
one wished to get it earlier you could go to Microsoft Update. I've
tried this, but SP1 is not listed and my Windows is shown to be up-to-
date.
I've gone through all the reasons why SP1 might not be listed (installed
already; problem drivers; beta install of SP1; etc) but none of those
conditions seem to apply.
So... why can't I get SP1?

Vista Service Pack 1 - stand alone version
Why is microsoft advising against downloading the stand alone version?
My windows update hasn't worked for about 9 months now (80004002 - see
various other threads) and so I cannot possibly get any updates unless
they're stand alone versions yet you're not advised to download the stand
alone version.
My choice is:
1. continue with no updates, no SP1 and so forth for an indefinite period
(probebly for the life of the PC) until it no longer works at all (it already
crashes about once every half hour)
2. download the stand alone version, hope that fixes windows update but risk
PC meltdown

Vista SP1 Breaks Computer
I tried to installed it and it corrupted IME files. After restarting, during
SP1 install, it gets stuck on a black screen and tells me that there's an
error !! 0xc0190036 !! for a file. I have to use system restore for anything
to work.
It looks like the SP corrupted several IME files: imjpdsvr imjpdadm imjputyc
imjpuex etc.
sfc, chkdsk, can't fix the problem. I've read elsewhere to take ownership,
add full rights, and then delete the files...that's supposed to work. Too
bad Vista refuses to let me delete them (through WE, cmd, cmd in safemode,
etc)...says access is denied. I can take ownership but that's it.
What do I do?

Windows Vista SP1 issue.
Vista ultimate 32bit
Dell E520 3.0 ghz, 2 gig ram.
I've had vista since before Christmas and not had a single problem with it
until I installed SP1.
After installing SP1, it says that hardware had changed on my PC and that I
had to reactivate? I tried the online activation and this failed saying that
I needed to buy a new key.. I then retried the activation through the phone
and this worked.
i've never had any hardware changes and its never prompted my for activation
since installation. maybe one to watch out for guys.. Tag: vista update Error 0x80070059 Tag: 250171
SP1 update
When I go to install the SP1 update the size is shown as 65MB. I have only a
dial up connection which downloads at around 12MB's per hour thus the
download would take 5+ hours. My ISP automatically disconnects after about 3
hours. My question is if I start this download and get disconnected will it
resume at the point I was disconnected or will it start all over again from
the beginning? Tag: vista update Error 0x80070059 Tag: 250170
Resolution Automatically Resets to Lowest Setting after Windows Up
Hereâ??s my problem: Several nights ago my girlfriend was running Windows
Update on her computer. Not only did she download the critical updates, she
also clicked several other hardware updates as well. She downloaded the
Windows Internet Explorer 7 for XP, Hewlett-Packard VP17 LCD Monitor driver,
& NVIDIA Vanta/Vanta LT driver. After installing these updates the computer
automatically shut down for the evening. When I turned on the computer the
next day I had two new problems. First, the resolution was completely jacked
up. The appropriate settings for this monitor are 1280 x 1024, 60 Hz. The
computer now automatically adjusts back to 640 x 480 resolution. No matter
what I do, it always returns to this setting. I have changed the setting in
display properties, manually had the monitor look for optimal display
settings, and even changed the display properties in Safe Mode. Nothing has
worked. The interesting thing is that the resolution is just fine when in
Safe Mode. But, as soon as I exit back to the regular Windows program, the
resolution is messed up again. I read on a previous post that in a similar
situation relocating and downloading the appropriate video card driver solved
the problem. Apparently Microsoft doesnâ??t always download the right driver.
The driver needed for this system is actually a Windows Me/98 driver, because
that was that last driver supported by this video card (Vanta/Vanta LT). I
downloaded it, but still have the problem. Frustrated, I finally decided to
roll back Windows to a restore point about a week ago before the problems
occurred. Unfortunately, when the restore process was about 95% completed, it
stopped and told me it could not restore to this particular point. So, I
tried twice more choosing different points. Same result. This kind of
concerns me as well.
Another problem that might be related (which Iâ??ve also researched on this
site) is Flash9e.ocx kept crashing Internet Explorer 7 after it was
downloaded with the updates. This was never a problem previous to the
updates. After reading some of these posts, I deleted the Flash activeX
program and havenâ??t had a problem. However, whenever I load a page with Flash
it wants to load it again. I did once, and the problem started all over
again. So, I deleted it again. But now I canâ??t view any flash content.
One more piece of information that might be helpful. This computer, as you
can probably guess by the video card, was originally running Windows 98. Her
family loaded XP about a year ago. Iâ??m not sure if this would cause any
problems with Update (perhaps causing it to download the latest XP driver not
supported by the video card), but I figure the more information you have the
better. Iâ??ve been working on this problem for almost a week now. I'm
extremely desperate to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

XP Windows Update - 2nd attempt
I've been experiencing start up problems for a while in that my laptop
remains busy for upto 30 minutes (even from hibernation). It looks like a
variation of the 100% CPU problem except the hard disk is busy throughout the
process, not the CPU. Checking for updates via the MS website takes 2 minutes
max. My MS S/W is completely upto date!
I've switched off auto updates completely as it ignores the check on a
specific day of the week option and the problem has gone away!
I've only been able to find info on the 100% CPU problem hence this post.
any help gratefully received.
