virus protection

when you first click the shield and the screen pops up to tell you whats on
and off, the virus protection says that it is off and i tried to turn it on
but it wont work. how do i get it to come on??????

Would you provide some basic information:
Your version of Windows. If you are looking at XP's Security Center, or =
something else.
Your antivirus product name/version, etc.

It's very important that your pc have a running antivirus. So that's why =
I'm replying, even though you should have posted to a group other than =
windowsupdate, where the focus is on Windows Update issues.

You will need to actually install an anti-virus program. Windows
doesn't come with one. Also, that 3rd party anti-virus program must
interact with the Security Center to report its status or disable that
function in Security Center; else, you'll have to disable it yourself
(i.e., Security Center doesn't know you installed an anti-virus program,
the anti-virus program doesn't update Security Center, so you'll have to
disable the reporting in Security Center to get rid of the bogus
warning).
