2 problems: When automatic updates are installing, the machine slows to a
crawl (in need of a memory update, but that's another story). Also, the
update settings are configured to just notify me, NOT automatically install,
but it happens anyway, and freezes up performance. Any ideas? thanks in
advance

Full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1)?

Is Microsoft Update your default update source? Did you just switch to
Microsoft Update (vs Windows Update) as the default update source? What
updates installed "automatically" and when? Is Automatic Updates configured
to Notify Only now? If so, did you have to reselect that setting after
making Microsoft Update your default?
