I have two computer running XP Pro SP2.
One one I now get offer of SP3 update.
But not on the other. Why is that?

I have checked registry for blockers and
policies, but can't find any differences.

Problem for me is that I'd like to try
SP3 on the system that is NOT offered it.

How do I make the SP3 offer appear?

It's available here, Lars-Erik:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT
Professionals and Developers
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en

The only public reason for it not being offered to certain systems:

Well, is it really available there? I only get a 404 when clicking the
download button on the page your link takes me to.

I am being offered SP3 from Windows Update for all four computers I am about
to update, but would like a clean install using a slipstreamed XP3 to
improve the performance of the computers.

Is this an exacutable you can run from a CD?

Should I extract it before burning to a CD
(to save space/time and temp files on PC)?

or is there a special CD image somewhere?

If you download the .exe file you can simply put it on a CD for backup
and if you don't think it will run from the cd, then copy it to the HD,
then run. The .exe file does nothing but unpack itself to a temp
folder, install, and then removes the temp folder. Leaving the .exe
still there and you can delete it.

It is an executable. It is the "standalone" SP3 package.

It is also what you would use when slipstreaming with an XP SP1 or SP2 cd to
create an integrated XP SP3 installation cd.

The exe file link is quite busy today for obvious reasons! SP3 just
came out today [officially] and also people have started Windows update
and can you imagine about 1 billion systems all hitting Microsoft sites
at the same time!!

Burned it, and tried to install it. About 75% done extracting it says
that "file is corupt" and aborts the installation. That's Microsoft.

Why do they put out a CD image that is corrupt?

It worked for me, though admittedly I downloaded the ISO from technet rather
than the download center.

The CD might be faulty, or the download may have glitched, or there could be a
problem with the system you're trying to install it on. Look in
WindowsUpdate.log and svcpack.log for any error messages that might shed light
on the specific issue.

I verified the CD, no problem.

I also downloaded the EXE-file (finally I got through)
and that installed OK. But when I compared that with
the one on the CD they have some bytes difference.

Should they be equal (could I replace the one one the
CD with the separate EXE I downloaded to make a CD
with a working SP3, or is the EXE on the CD different).

I'll try downloading the ISO once more and compare
with the first one I downloaded (and with the written
CD if I find a program that can do such a compare)

Bad download?
Bad burn?
Scratched CD?

Definitly bad download, but I have NEVER experienced that before

I check by doing the following :-)

1) Downloaded the ISO-image again (3 timer to be sure)
2) Compared with FC /b against the original one that has error
3) Result. Difference: 0EAEF7F9: A4 B4

Then I tried comparing the EXE-file downloaded
to the EXE file on the CD burned from the image:

Result. Difference: 0E9A6FF9: A4 B4

So it seems like ONE BYTE was bad on the first ISO
download, and that that byte was in the SP3 EXE file.

How is that possible? Isn't there things that should
prevent bad transfers? Or is there a bad file at MS?

No, they will not be the same size. The installed service pack is, but not
the delivery package. Reduce the burn speed.

Actually just one bit. :-)

Since there are multiple physical servers one of them might have a bad copy. It
could also have been a hardware glitch either at the server or at your end,
either due to a fault, an external factor such as a cosmic ray, or just a random
failure. (Theoretically it could also have gotten damaged en route but this is
much less likely as the data packets are checksummed.)

Harry.

No it is not Microsoft but your HD. When you install from the CD, the
files are EXTRACTED to your HD and then installation takes place from
your HD not from the CD. So I can only say that your HD is beginning to
wear out in which case it is time to backup your DATA and do diagnostic
test on the HD. Intallation does not take place from the CD once the
files are copied to your HD.

hope this helps

The error was in the ISO-file BEFORE I burned the CD
(the downloaded ISO, I compared with a new download).

And an error on my HDD while downloading would give a CRC error
(I have had HDDs with errors before - I now how that is :-)))))

The disk is also brand new and har no errors.

I redowloaded the file, and compared (several times). No error.

I'd say that either it happened during transmission or a faulty image.
