is SP3 a critical update ?
I am using HP523 compac desktop , almost 10years old and still runs 100% well
on XP home edition SP2 .
Noticed microsoft update doesn't connect or work manually.
Still all systems go and functioning correctly.
Is there any advantage for an old desktop to use SP3 ???

Size of .ISO file
Recently I updated four PC's with Windows XP SP3.
Two are running language NL and two are running language EN-US.
I used the from MicroSoft downloaded .EXE files without any problem.
WindowsXP-KB93629-SP3-x86-NLD.exe size 313.157KB for the PC's using
Dutch and WindowsXP-KB93629-SP3-x86-ENU.exe size 324.030KB for the two
PC's using English.
The size of the two language different files is quite close.
Later I downloaded the .ISO files to create NL and EN SP3 CD's.
xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_nl_x86fre_spdcd.iso size 377.870KB and
xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spdcd.iso size 557.932KB

SP3 Download for XP MCE 2005?
Please could someone point be to a downloadable version

exists?
I ask because I recall reading that SP3 for MCE is only
available via Windows Update and the download I've found
specifies "Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP Home

Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2", i.e. not MCE.
For me, Windows Update has only produced a series of
failures on two systems, so I'd like to try something

Windows XP Home edition SP3 update stops PC booting up
I updated windows XP home last night with SP3 the update hung and I had to
reboot after 2 hours. When it rebooted a blue screen flashed up and the PC
rebooted. It just circles around in this loop. I tried safe mode but it did
the same. I can't tell what the blue screen says as it flashes past too
quickly.
I then tried reinstalling windows, but get back to the same problem when I
try to update to SP3. I can now boot into safe mode and restore to before the
SP3 update. But if I leave windows in this condition it won't have any of the
security updates.

Does the SP2 CD image access the Internet during install?
I have downloaded the SP3 CD image from the MS Download Centre and copied it
to a CD. You recommend that during SP3 installation the anti-virus is
disabled, in which case I would like to disconnect the machine from the
Internet. Does the SP3 install process access the Internet when running from
the CD image?
Also, my machine (under French XP Prof) will not run well if Automatic
Updates are activated - it hangs initialising the updates, displaying the
list of installed programs, accessing the E:\ drive, etc. Will this cause
problems with the installation of SP3? (Note that with the auto update
service deactivated, it runs fine).
Will SP3, if successfully installed, eliminate the above problems?

Hi
I installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 yesterday, but I had to cancel the =
download/installation twice before what seemed to be a successful =
install. The cancellations were on account of its taking longer than I =
thought was usual....
Microsoft Update shows SP3 as installed after those two cancelled =
updates. No outstanding high priority updates are shown there. Likewise =
the Belarc Advisor tells me SP 3 is installed.=20
System Tools-->System Inforamtion also indicates that SP 3 is installed.
The entry in the Add/Remove programs at the Control Panel also shows: =
Windows XP Service Pack 3 to be installed.=20
However, there is a windows Media Player icon next to the SP3 entry in =
the Add/Remove list instead of the usual Windows Update type icons.
I notice a similar Windows Media Player icon for the Microsoft =
Compression Client Pack 1.0, probably installed ~2 years ago, but not =
sure if it was likewise downloaded via Windows Update.
So far I haven't experienced any issues with the SP3. However, I do find =
that Windows Media Player icon next to the service Pack 3 entry very =
baffling.
Can I assume all is well nonetheless?=20
Any explanations for that odd icon?
Does it indicate some corruption in the installation of SP3?

Windows XP SP3 and .NET upgrades
I installed SP3 version 20080414.031525 downloaded from Microsoft today.
Installation went OK. Two packages failed (KB928365 and KB928366). Those
are .NET 2.0 and .NET 1.1 SP1.
There is .NET 2.0 already installed but I cannot either repair or remove
it (Contol Panel->Add/Remove Software). I tried to install those two
many times.
KB928365 - error code 0x663
KB928366 - error code 0xE0434F4D
There was an error window: SLx(x).tmp (x(x) was different each time).
SLx(x).tmp has encountred a problem and needs to close.
History of ugrades:
From 2004 it was a plain vanilla XP Home. I had no problem. MSI
Motherboard with Athlon64 3000+, 2.0 GHz and 1.5 GB RAM. HDD 120 GB +
320 GB. Dual boot Windows and Ubuntu 8.04 on separated physical drives.
A month ago I needed SP2 to run a new hardware (E-MU Tracker Pre USB
2.0). So I upgraded to SP1 + upgrades, SP2 + upgrades. Everything was
fine until upgrades to SP2. My computer did boot, past GRUB (dual boot
menu), XP screen and Welcome but my desktop had a strange red mark, and
my mouse and keyboard were dead. Last known working... didn't help.
I started from the last automatic recovery point using Safe Mode. Now
everything was fine. At least it seemed so. Sony Vegas didn't work anymore.
An error occured during the current operation.
The Microsoft .NET runtime could not be initialized.
Please install the .NET Framework (download is available from Windows
Update).
Well, that was the first time I tried to repair and uninstall .NET.
Didn't work.
Than I installed SP3 RC2.
Everything was smooth. But the same problem with Vegas.
Now I installed the finel version od SP3 (uninstalled SP3 RC2 before).
The Vegas (.NET) problem persist plus upgrades of .NET.
Should I try to uninstall .NET 1.1?
Or just install entire .NET without uninstall?

Windows XP SP3
Would have been nice if Microsofts Sub-Contractors would have gotten the bugs
out of release version! Tried 3 times to install and haf way thru it locked
up! Telling all my friends to not install til Microsoft gets the bugs out!
MAYBE MICROSOFT SHOULD HIRE AMERICAN WORKERS AND NOT HIRE FROM OVERSEAS
BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE ANY AMERICAN WORKERS SMART ENOUGH TO RELEASE WITH BUGS
IN IT!

started with "blue screen and ended up with "missing system32\hal.
Hi folks...
I'm praying somone can assist me as I've been waiting to hear back from
Microsoft on this as it started (when I noticed - my daughter's computer)
when trying to run updates from Microsoft.
Her system is older, running XP Pro and there isn't much on it believe it or
not. AVG is the anti-virus and I've also tried running some registry scans.
No avail, but cleaned a few things up. Mostly having to run in Safe Mode and
Safe Mode w/Networking, yet will still eventually end up getting that blue
screen and many times re-looping and getting stuck & F8 doesn't always work
either.
Again, this is my daughterâ??s computer, and I believe this started about a
week or so ago. She finally told me a few days ago and when I started taking
a look at her system, this is all new, not past issues Iâ??ve experienced.
1. The first thing I tried to do was to run a scan on her system to see if
there were virus, etc.
2. Then I tried to run a windows update and thatâ??s when I personally
encountered the first blue screen of manyâ?¦
3. I had already attempted many times to Use the â??Last Known Good
Configurationâ?? to no avail, a few times the system couldnâ??t even get to
running Windows without having returned directly to the blue screen.
4. Then I was able to use the Safe Mode with Networking, tried running
Windows Update that way, didnâ??t work. Multiple attempts each ending in Blue
Screen
5. I noticed that a message finally gave me something about a Driver issue,
so went to Device Manager, and updated/reinstalled drivers a display screen
and a multimedia device (neither of which I am familiar), but then the Device
Mgr was clear.
6. Then attempted to run Windows update and it did actually download the
Visualization Tool & Installed, thought I was actually getting somewhereâ?¦
But then after it asked me to continue on with scanning for updates, I was
back to the blue screen and it proceeded to no longer be able to start
Windows again, just re-routing back to Blue Screen.
7. Last Known Good Configuration again, didnâ??t work.
I do have screen shots of the blue screens it gives, but the error codes are
of no help as the four it gives me, always change.
I've finally turned the damn thing off as it was just re-looping to blue
screen and couldn't load windows, so after 3 days of tyring to figure it out,
I've given up....
Lastly, apparently my daughter turned the computer on, and now all it shows
is a black screen with the "missing system32\hal.dll" file.
Now I've seen this when I got a brand new system running both Mac & OS
systems, when I loaded windows. I figured out a work around for it on the
Mac, but this system only runs Windows, so not sure what to do from here with
it...
She has some things on her system that she's hoping I don't have to do a
fresh install so any suggestions are tremendously appreciated.
Please let me know what further info I can provide to be of assistance.
Thanks so much,

MBSA/Update Inventory Tool
Anyone have an idea as to what version of XML parser is required for MBSA 2.1
and/or Microsoft Update Inventory Tool? None of the March/April Office
patches are showing as required and I'm thinking it might be the version of
XML parser - 3.0, no SP - that I'm running.
Thanks! Tag: I solved service pack 3 download problem Tag: 254703
Where'd SP3 Go?
I had one of those notices (the little yellow shield icon in my
systray)when I booted up today saying that new updates were available
for my computer, and the icon's details said it was XP SP3, so I hit
the the "download" button and the icon disappeared and nothing
downloaded. I rebooted my computer to see if the icon would come back
and it didn't. The I went to the normal Microsoft Program Update site
and let it check my system for available updates and it only showed the
latest Windows Authentication update being available, nothing else.
What gives? Tag: I solved service pack 3 download problem Tag: 254697
Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005
Win Update told me today that SP3 was ready to download. Tried and it failed
after about 20 minutes after downloading a "preparing your computer for
download".
Tried a 2nd time with same result each with the error code Error Code:
0x80004005.
Seems to be a different code to other people, so what is it and how can I
overcome it. Tag: I solved service pack 3 download problem Tag: 254695
Some computers does not download updates...
Hi all,
A week ago I installed WSUS 3.0 SP1 on a Windows Server 2003 (domain
controller) computer. I had been running WSUS 1.0 for many years without
problems. Now I configured everything and it looks all is OK but my test PC
does not get the updates.
Everybody is reporting to the WSUS server. I authorized a bunch of updates
for this test PC. In my settings there is not timeline for updates to avoid
clogging the slow link to remote sites when time expires. I have also
configured BITS to restrict bandwidth usage by WSUS to certain computers.
The BITS remains the same as was configured to work with WSUS 1.0. I already
checked the result policy by using Group Policy Management console to a test
PC and the policies are applied as expected.
I checked the IIS log on the WSUS server to check if the test PC is
downloading the updates and I found a log like this to appear several times
a day since new WSUS installation
GET /selfupdate/WSUS3/x86/Other/wsus3setup.cab 0805061117 80 - 10.10.10.150
Windows-Update-Agent 200 0 0
and no more. This is the only GET I have for 10.10.10.150 computer. Instead
other computers are downloading updates. For example:
GET /Content/37/C87E2FE94DD873224AFA65E2AF2473CA3E307A37.CAB - 80 -
10.10.41.222 Microsoft+BITS/6.6 206 0 0
It is curious but it looks like all computers in the network 10.10.10.x are
experiencing the same problem like 10.10.10.150. The WSUS server is located
in the same 10.10.10.x network
What can be wrong?
Any hint is welcomed
Thanks in advance
Sammy

XP SP3 Major flaw
I was wondering if anyone else had this issue. On my wife's HP and my son's
PC, did new installs, however express update chooses to install SP3 which
then prevented any other updates from being downloaded or shown after.
Thinking it installed all updates, Windows live mail, etc... would not
install. After contacting the support, the only thing that worked was to
restore to the fresh install prior to SP3 and then live apps worked and
installed flawlessly.
Another thing, I updated manually and even then had a hard time and had to
go back to the update site manually, "not from PC" else couldn't get any
updates besides the SP3 update. What a mess. A note:even when trying to go
to update site using browser, if SP3 installed first, couldn't get any other
updates.
My PC handled it fine but I already had all my updates and wasn't a fresh
install as the other two. My suggestion, manually install ALL updates except
for SP3 , then SP3 although, I am not chancing installing SP3 on those
systems quite yet.

Vista Ultimate Wont Update
When manually checking I keep getting various errors for the last two days.
Is it just busy servers (SP frenzy) ??
I noticed this morning that I had problems downloading Newsgroup messages to
Windows Mail also, which makes me think that maybe it's a problem at MSFT's
end.
