I have a Dell Dimension 4400 that I reformatted the hard drive, and
installed Windows XP Pro.

I attempted to install all of the latest critical security updates.
If I remember correctly, I wasn't offered anything except SP3 which I
assume includes all of the updates included with SP2.

SP3 downloaded & iinstalled fine.

On the next boot, I checked to see if there were any more updates. It
found a few. They download, but will not install. I've tired this
all week, powered the machine off, etc

Installing Updates X
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some updates were not installed

The following updates were not installed:

Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP
Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2008 (KB890830)

Close
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any ideas?

Maybe I need to install IE7 separately using a different installer?

The machine doesn't yet have antivirus or much of any software. I
turned off the XP firewall.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Sorry about the other post. I hit post without thinking.

Try this website. I had the same problem earlier. You will need to force
an update of your windows update agent.

Nate,

See if following the steps laid out here resolves the installation
issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Ignore the title and do Method 1.
If no joy, do Method 2.
If you have to do #2 and a message appears that the Windows Update Agent
is already installed, then see this to force it's installation:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1172

Scroll down to the bottom for the steps needed.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

NEVER connect to the internet without a firewall enabled!!!

After posting, I visited another link on Microsoft's website to
download IE7.

IE7 downloaded & installed fine.

After attempting to install the same 3 critical Windows updates, I ran
into the exact same problems.

I then downloaded tool you mentioned at the link below. A message
came up saying I was already using it, or something of that sort.

What should I try next? How important are those updates I mentioned?

Are all of the SP2 updates included in the already installed SP3?

Thanks

With in these 4 messages for the topic I posted, or previous messages
others had posted?

If you mean previous topics others posted, which ones?

Most of the topics I saw had to do with SP3 not installing at all.
That worked ok at least.

Thanks for your help PABear.

My security suite requires the Windows Firewall to be disabled in
order to install it.

Occasionally, I find other programs will not install when the firewall
is enabled, but most do.

The security suite is now installed, and the firewall is turned on.
That is the procedure I was told to follow.

I found them, thanks.

I had not intended on posting the same topic twice, and didn't noticed

According to http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/05/05/ie-and-xpsp3.aspx,
there is an issue when installing IE7 after SP3.

Do you mean the problem with security update 938127, MS07-050?

Harry.
