While in Safe Mode, *right* click My Computer, either on the Desktop or
the Start Menu, and choose Manage.
Click on 'Device Manager' in the left frame
Look for a device with a yellow question mark in the right frame
Are there any ?
If the answer is yes, then *right* click ON the problematic device
and choose 'Uninstall'
Agree to the prompt
Once the device is uninstalled, restart the system to normal Windows
mode and PlugandPlay should detect the device and install it.

IF there are no problematic devices, then you can

1) Try booting to Safe Mode with Networking.
Open the svcpack.log located in WINDOWS. Copy and paste the contents of
the log into your reply.
IF the system can not boot to Safe Mode with Networking, then this might
be a clue that the Network Adapter driver is causing the Safe Mode issue.
2)Uninstall SP3 from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel while in Safe
Mode. Restart to normal Windows mode.

Post back with your progress and we'll go from there.

Continual reboots or can only boot into Safe Mode after installing WinXP
SP3?

Workarounds:

â?¢ Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.

â?¢ After booting into Safe Mode:

Start | Run | (copy/paste) sc config intelppm start= disabled | OK | Reboot
into normal (Windows) mode.

Better off disabling the INTELPPM than renaming. It could come back if you
have to reinstall SP3 or repair XP.

This page is very helpful for all that are experiencing any problem with
SP3. I have had problems with installing it 2 times.
For me it's either my anti-virus program or driver issue with HP.
Help, if you can. Thanks

Is the AV completely and totally disabled prior to the installation
attempt ? Either consult the Help file or the manufacturer's web site to
learn how this is accomplished.

The svcpack.log, located in WINDOWS, *should* have an entry that shows
where the installation issue is occurring.
If you'd like, you can send me the svcpack.log, or, if you don't want to
do all this troubleshooting, MS will provide free suppport:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

It's up to you <w> If you want to send the log, just say so and I'll
provide an email address.
