I downloaded the windows update version you suggested and everything was
going fine with the update routine until I got an error message saying the
update had failed with error 0.080073712!

I'll always assume that the OPs know what operating system they have even if
they don't state it. If they don't know what OS they're using then

Description of the CheckSUR update for Windows Vista and for Windows
Vista for x64-based systems
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Please read the above KB article and make the registry edits shown.
Then download and save KB947281
When the download completes close the browser and any other open programs.
RESTART the system *now*.

After the system has restarted, *Right* click
Windows6.0-KB947821-x86.msu and choose 'Run as administrator'. Follow
the prompts.

Did that resolve the error message ?

Ran the CheckSUR as per the instructions successfully. Rebooted and then
tried to use Windows update again - still got the same problem but no error
message is coming up. I get the opening dialog box that says check for
windows updates, I execute it and then get a message saying I have first to
install an update to Windows Update (which is already installed on my
system). I try to do the update and just get the original dialog box. I can
go through this process ad infinitum! Checking my installation history, I
seem to have all the available updates installed automatically - just can't
do it manually!

Thanks for your kind assistance.

You're mowst welcome. What you need to do is to install the Windows
Update Agent [WUA] using /wuforce. Instructions for doing so are here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1172

CheckSUR can not replace files that have been updated. In this case, the
WUA files are attempting to update but the system is not allowing their
installation due to their running during the installation process.
Stopping the Windows Update service [ wuauserv ] and using /wuforce
*should* take care of that issue.

Re: error 80073712 message on windows update by hitmouse

hitmouse

I have Vista Ultimate SP1 32bit and I started getting WindowsUpdate
failures trying to download Dreamscene. Now every time I attempt to
use Windows Update I get the 80073712 error as Update tries to update
itself.

I don't have a pending.xml file, and KB947821 does not apply to SP1
(Windows6.0-KB947821-x86.msu will not even install on SP1).

I have 2 separate support requests into Microsoft that have been
dragging on for over a week (the second being because the WIndows Live
Installer won't install Messenger, and the fix for that requires that
WindowsUpdate also be functional).

Windows Defender still updates itself OK.

Even with AV, Firewall and Defender disabled the error continues.

That's correct. And why would one try to install it in SP1 ?
Jumping into another's thread can be hazardous to the OS' health if one
is not careful.

Which AV/ firewall ?
What does the WindowsUpdate.log show ? [ located in WINDOWS
directory(folder) ]

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

Because the KB does not specify that the patch is applicable only to
pre-SP1 builds of Vista. I've had Microsoft support try to make me
install similar pre-SP1 patches over the last week (in one thread
running to 22 messages so far). The latest Windows Update agent run
with /wuforce also fails with the 80073712 error.

The OP doesn't specify whether they have SP1 or not.

Initially it was only Dreamscene download attempts that failed, other
items had no problem. Then after PSS started getting involved,
everything started failing because my machine could no longer update
the Windows Update service itself as it required.

2 different support staff have had all my Windows Update, Live

to disable cryptographic services, but all to no avail.

A more descriptive entry of the errors should be in the CBS.log.
PSS did check that log, correct ?
Is Dreamscene available for download anywhere else besides Automatic,
Windows, or Microsoft Update ?

"Windows Vista Ultimate" is not exclusionary of SP1, since plenty of
articles will say "Windows XP" without specifying a SP.

They have dozens of log files. If they don't ahve that, they certainly
haven't asked for it.

No, but the point is moot because PSS have made all updates impossible
with the code they've made me run.
