SP3 download error 0x80070006 - "The handle is invalid"

I have tried the various workarounds for downloading SP3, but I still get the
same error just as SP3 starts downloading:

0x80070006 "The handle is invalid."

I'm pretty sure I have SP2 loaded already. WHat else could be going wrong?

Thanks, Pa. I've got SP2 and the validator worked fine, but still no luck,
even with my antivirus and firewall turned off. What next?
