Apparently, this is a known issue, but the only way I could boot was by doing
a Recovery. Unfortunately, this lost any important info & I was lseft with a
brand new computer having to reinstall everything.

Out of curiosity, would it be better to wait a while until sp3 has its bugs
taken care of? I'm afraid to try again.

Microsoft recommends you back up data before any major update [such as this].

Unsure what issue you are referring to. A "crash" can mean almost anything....

SP3 release is final. There may be some prerequisite fixes or post-fixes
that may be required.

Note that MIcrosoft will stop supporting XP with SP2 in a year [or is it 2?].

SP3 contains an old update called KB936357. This was suppose to be a
reliability issue for intel processor based machines. However this causes a
Blue Screen on certain P5 machines. IF this is an update you had issues with
in the past then you must wait on downloading and installing SP3 on your
machine until a fix or work around can be made available.

I installed SP3 last Friday. When I went to re-start, I got the black screen,
with options to start in safe mode, etc or start in a previous state. EAch
time it wouldn't reboot Windows.
I also did a recovery. I did all the Windows Update, until I got updated
fully. When I tried to put on SP3 again, it wouldn't reboot, still. So I went
into safemode and un-installed it again.
I talked to someone that said that this update may not be compatible with
some drivers. Also my machine is an AMD...which may be causing some problems.
I'm not finding a solution, regarding drivers with HP. I have a Compaq.
Does anyone know of a link to solve this issue of drivers and SP3?
Would appreciate any hints. Thanks

When I attempted to put on SP3, my computer wouldn't reload Windows at the
restart. I got the black screen, with some options. But it failed to restart.
I've been told it could be a driver issue or my Panda Internet Security, not
allowing it to work right.
I didn't feel I needed to back up data, because I ended up doing a recovery,
after the 1st attempt to put on SP3.
On 2nd attempt, Windows still wouldn't reboot in regular mode.
Any ideas?
I cannot locate an update @ HP for a driver.
