OS: Windows XP Home
SP: Upgraded to SP3

The following updates won't be installed with Microsoft Updater:
(some might be spelled in norwegian, but I will try to explain in short what
the content means)
- Oppdatering av søppelpostfilteret i Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
(KB955434)
- - (spam filter update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
- - Error Code: 0x517

- Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
- - Error Code: 0x517

- Oppdatering for Office 2003 (KB907417)
- - (update for Office 2003)
- - Error code: 0x517

- Microsoft .NET Framework versjon 1.1, norsk
- - Error Code: 0x643

- Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86 (KB829019)
- - Error Code: 0x643

The same updates can not be installed by using the automated update in
Windows.

Nor can I install .net 1.1 nor, 2.0 by downloading the .exe file from
Microsoft Downloading.

I have offcourse searchd around for any clues, but nothing have worked so far.

This computer belongs to someone else, so I cant say for sure what they have
done to make it like this.
But it seems to me like some applications dont have the right to overwrite,
or work with existing folders. as the installer for .NET tells me in the
middel of the installations (error code: 1713) that it can't create the
catalog: C:\Programfiler\Internet Explorer\ (it already there, and
"Programfiler" would be the same as "Program Files" on an english windows XP)

Seems to me that it somehow have lost the rights to alter some files, or
something in that direction.
Altho, all the users I have tryed this with, is a part of te Administrator
groupe.

Sorry if I have missspelled alot here, hope everyting is understandable.

Thank you for you time, and have a good day :-)

Post the last 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log by going to
Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter.

Not sure if the above will work in Danish. The log is located in the
WINDOWS directory [folder].
Once the log is open scroll all the way to the bottom for the most
recent entries. Copy and paste at least 50 lines of the log into your
reply, please.

Can anything be installed that depends upon Windows Installer ? All of
the failed updates *do* require it to install.

Try installing this, please to test if the Windows Installer is
functioning properly: MBSASetup-x86-EN.msi
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f32921af-9dbe-4dce-889e-ecf997eb18e9&DisplayLang=en

The download link is at the bottom of the above page.
If it does install, then uninstall after the test from Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel.

IN RE the Office 2003 updates: Insert the Office 2003 into the appropriate
drive bay before attempting to install these updates.

IN RE .NET Framework v1.1 and v2.0:

1. Write down what .NET Framework versions are already installed (e.g., v1.0
SP1) before proceeding below!

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

2. Now see Resolutions Methods 1 or 2 in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 (ignore the title).

If no joy, see this related post by my colleague MowGreen:

The installer dose not seem to work, tryed to install the program you linked
to me, but got the same message as I got while installing .NET applications.

"The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory:
<Directory>. The installation cannot continue."

Was looking into the solution on how to reinstall/repair the Windows Installer,
But with no little sucsess.

The guide I used was this:

Method 1. gave no errors, nor did it solve my problem.
Method 2. gave me the message that there was already a newer Windows
Installer on my computer. So I guess I might have messed it up a bit. Can't
figure out how, sins I tryed several times.

Any help would be greatfull

I have no .NET Framework installed, altho, I had .NET Framework 1.1 (I belive
it was SP1), but this was uninstalled during my athemt to solv this issue.

I followed the guide you linked to a few days ago, but with no sucsess:

As for the post made by MowGreen [MVP]
Sorry, but no sucsess there either :-/

Thank you for your help this far! :-)

Format & reinstall Windows. WinXP requires .NET Framework v1.0 to be
installed to work properly.

What is the installed AV/security suite ?
When was the system last scanned with by the AV, Ole-Bjørn ?

Windows Installer usually writes to an installation log that's located
in the WINDOWS directory. If you attempted to install Windows Installer
4.5, then the log should be named KB942288-v3.log
If the Version was WI 3.1, the log would be KB893803v2.log

When Windows Installer breaks and one can not repair nor reinstall it,
that *may* be a sign that the system is hosting 'unwanted guests'.
If the log shows any errrors then please post back with them.

Just to be safe, suggest you either have the system scanned online [
using Internet Explorer ]:

Detects but does not remove malware
http://usa.kaspersky.com/services/free-virus-scanner.php

Detects and removes malware
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

Or, download a standalone scanner:

Multi Virus Cleaner:
http://www.viruskeeper.com/us/mvc.htm

Read the enclosed ReadMe or Help file to learn how it should be run.

Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

See the section with the Sysclean link.
Download the latest DCT Control Release.
Then read the included readme_sysclean.txt to see how to run it.
Suggest you do so in Safe Mode. And, it will take quite some time to
finish it's scan so suggest you delete .tmp files stored in any User
Profile first
Documents and Settings\<UserAccountName>\Local Settings\Temp
