I am running Vista Business 32 bits with SP1, have automatic update set to
'yes'.

Windows update was working fine for me till a few days ago. Lately, even
when I receive notification that updates are available, but once I click it,
it just won't response. When I shut the machine down, on the shut down
screen, there's a message saying 'configurating updates', however, nothing
ever happen.

I have uninstalled all the softwares right back to the date that automatic
update was still working for me. Still I was not able to update my window
system.

Via "control panel - backup and restore", I have tried restore back to the
date when windows update was still working. When it restart, I will get a
message saying that 'restore has not completed properly............'. When I
go back to control panel, hoping to perform a new restore, I will get a
message saying 'restore already in progress........'. I simply not able to
restore to anything.

I have downloaded the individual updates from Microsoft into my harddrive,
when I execute it, I get a message saying 'preparation has completed', then
nothing happen.

I have shut down my Zonealarm firewall, AVG virus scan, Spybot, still, I am
not able to update my window or perform a restore.

I simply don't have a clue of what have went wrong. It's just so frustrated.

Judging from similar posts here in the past month or so, the behavior may be
due to a Vundo-ZLOB-SDBot infection, all of which is protected by a rootkit.

Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks PA Bear for the advice, I do have to admit that it is too complex for
me. I have now got in touch with Microsoft update support. I have not yet
make any changes to the computer yet, however (again I have no idea of why or
how), I can now see the available updates, except that when I try to install
them, I now get a error message 80240016. It is getting very interesting. I
am confident that with the help of MS, I will be be able to resolve it.
Thanks again for all the helps.

80240016 SUS_E_INSTALL_NOT_ALLOWED

Translation: Whatever you're trying to install is failing, either because
another update is still installing or the machine needs to be rebooted.

Did you install Vista SP1 via Window Update or manually?

Tip: Stick with MS Support on this one!
