I had the update setting on automatic to be done at 8pm and my time was being
overridden and I was also receiving updates that had no bearing on my system
(updates for XPSP2! not Vista) So I changed it to download but don't install
until I checked them. I was finding updates that were being installed anyway
and sometimes twice back to back. ie - that fateful Tues in March with KB
938371 that took away all my USB drives. Now I have changed it to just
notify me of updates and I will decide which ones to install and the stupid
updates are being updated and installed anyway.
Is anyone else having this problem? I am sick of Microsoft deciding which
updates I need. I know a lot of them were in preparation for SP1 but I never
did get that as an update. Downloaded and installed myself with the help
from Microsoft and I had no problem. Sorry - BTP I don't know any thing else
to do but cut them off completely which is certainly enticing at this point.
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks, Jody

Is Windows Live OneCare installed ? If not, read on ...

Please provide me a copy of the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS
directory [folder], Jody. Compress it into a .zip file before sending.
Send it to mowgreenAT@gmaildotcom ( you can figure out the real email
addy, right? <w> )
I'll send it along to the Update Team and, hopefully, we'll find out why
the updating options are not honoring your settings.

Your post is not clear: Are you currently running Vista or Vista SP1?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include
but are not limited to Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, AVG Anti-Spyware,
Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, NOD32, and Zone Alarm
(Free, Pro, & Security Suite).

Vista Home SP1, Avast anti-virus, spysweeper, spyware blaster, windows
firewall, spybot without TeaTimer and that is it.
I hope that helps.

Well I am still learning this forum but I have never had a reply disappear
before, so this may be a duplicate. I have not seen anything about a time
limit to post your reply - is there one? I read about my e-mail address and
using a different one. Glad I found that 'cuz I didn't quite understand the
first reply :]
Looking at my post I realized I had left a lot of info out. Thank you for
pointing it out to me, but I honestly had not thought of it.
I run Vista Home, SP1, Avast anti-virus,SpySweeper,Spybot,SpywareBlaster,
windows firewall and that's it.
Thanks, Jody

And is Automatic Updates still set to "Notify Only" or has it reverted back
to the earlier setting?

In any event, if you found or find that the setting had reverted back to an
earlier setting, chances are that Spysweeper's real-time protection was the
responsible party. However...

If you'd been using Windows Update as your default update source and then
switched it to Microsoft Update (offers updates for Windows, Office, and
Windows Live), making that switch will reset Automatic Updates back to the
"Automatic" setting.

But yesterday an update was automatically installed and the setting was to download and install only if I choose. I had checked it earlier that day. So I assume it is SpySweeper, so how do I fix it? I don't want it on Automatic, which it isn't anyway. What a mess. Now what?

Can you identify the update that was automatically installed yesterday,
Jody?

Might it have been the Windows Update "infrastructure" update I referenced
in a post in this same newsgroup on 03 July? =>

Updates continue to be installed and my setting was changed to download and
let me choose what to install. I did not change to Microsoft Update or vice
versa.
Please help me and once you explain I am sure it is quite simple. Obviously
there is no way to copy the update history, which I tried a few times. Geez
everything seems to be going to h.... in a hand basket.

1. Please open Control Panel | Automatic Updates and confirm that Option #3
(Notify Only) is selected & OK your way out.

2. Please open Contol Panel | Security Center and confirm that the status of
your anti-virus application (Avast), the WIndows Firewall, and Automatic
Updates is (a) being monitored and (b) that the status for AV and firewall
is ON (green) & that the status for AU is CHECK SETTINGS (yellow).

3. Reboot, then repeat #1 and tell me if the setting has changed to
AUTOMATIC.

4. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed?
