Hi,

Windows updates fails with this code Error number: 0x80072F78 and "The
website has encountered a problem..."

I have tried the following:
1) Deleting the Software Distribution folder
2) Connecting directly to the internet
3) Entering Windows update URLs to the trusted sites and unchecking the
https box.
4) Making sure all of the appropriate services are running
5) Calling Dell from which I purchased the laptop
6) Downloading and installing SP3
7) Installing I.E. 7. It installed but not the updates.

This is a Dell D520 laptop with Windows XP preinstalled.

Please help.

Thanks.

Nice post.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)
(Try even if you think none of that fits...)

Do all suggested methods.

( Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and do a custom scan after each
method/reboot. )

Hope that helps you out!
