I was having problems with XP so I reloaded it. After the reinstall I went
to update it and had 86 high-priority updates. They appear to download but
when I try to install them - they all fail! Any suggestions? I tried
Troubleshooter but it is too confusing. Thank you.

I have exactly the same issue. XP SP2. De installed and reinstalled
IE7 and no change. Is there somewhere recorded a boilerplate solution
to this?

Each time I shut down it attempts to install the changes, eventually
gives up and shuts down.

Same here!, didn't mean to reinstall XP but it happened and now tons of
issues. 88 updates will not install.

See if anything here helps.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

Thank you all. Method #1 fixed the problem. I tried Method#2 first because
it seemed easier but it did not work for me. Thank you all again for your
help.

I tried method 1 from the above recommendation. In spite of the fact
that one feels as if one is getting into the internals of the system,
if done exactly as set down, it works. It certainly worked for me --
thanks for the advice!
