    - started with "blue screen and ended up with "missing system32\hal. Hi folks... I'm praying somone can assist me as I've been waiting to hear back from Microsoft on this as it started (when I noticed - my daughter's computer) when trying to run updates from Microsoft. Her system is older, running XP Pro and there isn't much on it believe it or not. AVG is the anti-virus and I've also tried running some registry scans. No avail, but cleaned a few things up. Mostly having to run in Safe Mode and Safe Mode w/Networking, yet will still eventually end up getting that blue screen and many times re-looping and getting stuck & F8 doesn't always work either. Again, this is my daughterâ??s computer, and I believe this started about a week or so ago. She finally told me a few days ago and when I started taking a look at her system, this is all new, not past issues Iâ??ve experienced. 1. The first thing I tried to do was to run a scan on her system to see if there were virus, etc. 2. Then I tried to run a windows update and thatâ??s when I personally encountered the first blue screen of manyâ?¦ 3. I had already attempted many times to Use the â??Last Known Good Configurationâ?? to no avail, a few times the system couldnâ??t even get to running Windows without having returned directly to the blue screen. 4. Then I was able to use the Safe Mode with Networking, tried running Windows Update that way, didnâ??t work. Multiple attempts each ending in Blue Screen 5. I noticed that a message finally gave me something about a Driver issue, so went to Device Manager, and updated/reinstalled drivers a display screen and a multimedia device (neither of which I am familiar), but then the Device Mgr was clear. 6. Then attempted to run Windows update and it did actually download the Visualization Tool & Installed, thought I was actually getting somewhereâ?¦ But then after it asked me to continue on with scanning for updates, I was back to the blue screen and it proceeded to no longer be able to start Windows again, just re-routing back to Blue Screen. 7. Last Known Good Configuration again, didnâ??t work. I do have screen shots of the blue screens it gives, but the error codes are of no help as the four it gives me, always change. I've finally turned the damn thing off as it was just re-looping to blue screen and couldn't load windows, so after 3 days of tyring to figure it out, I've given up.... Lastly, apparently my daughter turned the computer on, and now all it shows is a black screen with the "missing system32\hal.dll" file. Now I've seen this when I got a brand new system running both Mac & OS systems, when I loaded windows. I figured out a work around for it on the Mac, but this system only runs Windows, so not sure what to do from here with it... She has some things on her system that she's hoping I don't have to do a fresh install so any suggestions are tremendously appreciated.     - MBSA/Update Inventory Tool Anyone have an idea as to what version of XML parser is required for MBSA 2.1 and/or Microsoft Update Inventory Tool?     - Where'd SP3 Go? I had one of those notices (the little yellow shield icon in my systray)when I booted up today saying that new updates were available for my computer, and the icon's details said it was XP SP3, so I hit the the "download" button and the icon disappeared and nothing downloaded. I rebooted my computer to see if the icon would come back and it didn't. The I went to the normal Microsoft Program Update site and let it check my system for available updates and it only showed the latest Windows Authentication update being available, nothing else.     - Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005 Win Update told me today that SP3 was ready to download. Tried and it failed after about 20 minutes after downloading a "preparing your computer for download". Tried a 2nd time with same result each with the error code Error Code: 0x80004005.     - Some computers does not download updates... Hi all, A week ago I installed WSUS 3.0 SP1 on a Windows Server 2003 (domain controller) computer. I had been running WSUS 1.0 for many years without problems. Now I configured everything and it looks all is OK but my test PC does not get the updates. Everybody is reporting to the WSUS server. I authorized a bunch of updates for this test PC. In my settings there is not timeline for updates to avoid clogging the slow link to remote sites when time expires. I have also configured BITS to restrict bandwidth usage by WSUS to certain computers. The BITS remains the same as was configured to work with WSUS 1.0. I already checked the result policy by using Group Policy Management console to a test PC and the policies are applied as expected. I checked the IIS log on the WSUS server to check if the test PC is downloading the updates and I found a log like this to appear several times a day since new WSUS installation GET /selfupdate/WSUS3/x86/Other/wsus3setup.cab 0805061117 80 - 10.10.10.150 Windows-Update-Agent 200 0 0 and no more. This is the only GET I have for 10.10.10.150 computer. Instead other computers are downloading updates. For example: GET /Content/37/C87E2FE94DD873224AFA65E2AF2473CA3E307A37.CAB - 80 - 10.10.41.222 Microsoft+BITS/6.6 206 0 0 It is curious but it looks like all computers in the network 10.10.10.x are experiencing the same problem like 10.10.10.150. The WSUS server is located in the same 10.10.10.x network What can be wrong?     - XP SP3 Major flaw I was wondering if anyone else had this issue. On my wife's HP and my son's PC, did new installs, however express update chooses to install SP3 which then prevented any other updates from being downloaded or shown after. Thinking it installed all updates, Windows live mail, etc... would not install. After contacting the support, the only thing that worked was to restore to the fresh install prior to SP3 and then live apps worked and installed flawlessly. Another thing, I updated manually and even then had a hard time and had to go back to the update site manually, "not from PC" else couldn't get any updates besides the SP3 update. What a mess. A note:even when trying to go to update site using browser, if SP3 installed first, couldn't get any other updates. My PC handled it fine but I already had all my updates and wasn't a fresh install as the other two.     - Vista Ultimate Wont Update When manually checking I keep getting various errors for the last two days. Is it just busy servers (SP frenzy) ??     - WindowsUpdate_80070658 Office updates fail to install. When I got the update that installed service pack 1 for office 2007 all of my shortcut icons disapeared and all office shotcuts wont work . so inorder to open and office program I resorted to finding the icons and puting the new shortcuts on my desktop. Now I have an update for office that has been trying to install and fails repeatedly since 4/8 as a result I am NOT a happy person. and really tired of the fact that MS refuses to adress this issue. if anyone has a solution (Beside switching to Mac which Will be my next computer) then please let me know.     - XP SP3 hung, hung and crashed (3 failures) Existing software: Windows XP Professional SP2, IE7. 1. [First installation attempt] Automatic updates says updates available. It's SP3. Yippi. Accepting, then update icon disappears and after some hours of absolutely nothing, I go to Windows Update site. 2. [Second installation attempt] Installing from Internet Explorer. The EULA is even more offensive than usual, granting the right for Microsoft to install anything and to collect information about anything without even notifying me. Oh well, I accept anyway (I mean, I'd already done so without even glancing at it, the first time, I think). Progress meter is *fakeware*. First completely blank, then after half hour or so some activity but lying about what it does. E.g. downloading with zero network activity (I'm checking in Task Manager, yes it's really just lying). When it finally hangs completely there's still something ticking in IE: it acquires a new handle each second (almost precisely), without releasing. Other progs show zero activity. No CPU, no i/o. 3. [Third installation attempt] Checking Windows Update for what to do. Following directions, I download complete SP3 as single file, reboot, and joy over joys uninstall is invoked automatically and actually works (or seems to!). I turn off network connection, turn off antivirus (AVG), run the thing from downloaded file, and when I return to computer after some time there's Just In Time Debugging reporting some access violation or whatever it was in the install program, i.e. a crash. Checking the update log there are no obvious error codes, but it seems there are more installation attempts than I did explicitly. Uninstall works automatically on reboot this time also, although fucks up connection to USB disk and reports it's unformatted, would I like to format?     - All Microsoft updates fail After a recent software error i needed to reinstall Windows XP. After the inital install, I begin to use MS update, but shortly after i install IE7 i can no longer use MS update. the files download but when installing it fails without an error code. Install XP with SP2 from CD Install Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 Install wireless driver Install MS update (over windows update) and Genuine advantage and other items that are required to access MS update Install SP3 Install all other critical updates (IE 7) Install updates to IE 7 All further updates fail, and removing the last update, IE7 and Symantec do nothing except stopping me to upgrading back to IE7. I'm going to go and do a reinstall without symantec now, so with the exception of the wireless drivers all the software will be MS, trying to narrow down where the issue is. I followed your directions on hiding updates in xp but when I clicked on the download all it does is change from a + to a - sign, I don't know what you mean by expand, when I expand mine all is does is gives me details about the download. I want to hide the SP3. I am not installing that thing. Can you give me instructions again about how to hide the download.     - SP3 Access denied. My OS: WinXP SP2 fully patched, all updates are current (except KB936929). Capacity: 74.5 GB Used space: 16.4 GB Free space: 58.0 GB Prior downloading SP3 (KB936929) I defragged the disk, scanned with Kaspersky AV for malware, then paused the AV application and unchecked 'Use real-time protection' in WinDef. The System Restore points were flushed also. I don't have a 3rd party firewall and use the in-build application. The download went well and is shown in Add or Remove Programs panel but I got an "Access denied" error during installation. The installation process stopped and I had to click a prompt to uninstall SP3. I started the entire process again from the beginning (3 times) but still no luck. According to the progress bar, I noticed that the installation process terminated at about 50% or so while trying to install an item called UNIDRV.DLL (I was very fortunate to notice this). She has always used AVG free antivirus on her computer and although she has had this computer for 18 months, this is the first time she has had a definition update for Defender - I don't remember any either. During installation, had registry access errors (!) on HKCR\RDSServer.DataFactor.2.8.1 and a couple of related keys. Changed permissions, tried again. No pop-up errors about the registry this time, but XP3 update failed again, error code 0x80070005. Found the comments from people who had similar problems on XP2, with especial regard to KB873148. Using the info in that KB article, checked %windir%\svcpack.log and, yep, had DoRegistry falures in there.. So, turned on full debug as described in the article, reran the thing until it died. Fired up my local text editor (xemacs, what the heck), and went looking for the failed registry keys in %windir%\setupapi.log. Only problem - no failed registry keys! Is Windows Update for XP and/or Vista smart enough to only recommend updates for components I actually have on my machine?
