Been trying to install SP1 on a Vista Basic machine for 24 hours now. I'm
using a standalone Vista SP1 package that I have used on 3 other Vista boxes
with no trouble. On this HP lappy it will always error out with an error
code: 0x80070059. I have:

1. Run chkdsk
2. Memory test
3. sfc /scannow
4. And the only answer I see in a half hour of Googling. That is to copy
the file winusb.inf from
c:\Windows\system32\DriverStore\FileRepository\winusb.inf_0362a280\winusb.inf
to c:\Windows\inf. That did not work.

Anyone know a solution to this?

Has Windows Update offered this machine SP1 yet?

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates:

No it has not. I'm trying to satisfy a hardware vendor who thinks SP1 might
solve another problem. I'm very skeptical, but that's another story.

If Windows Update hasn't offered Vista SP1 to this machine, one or more of
the Causes in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343 may be the reason. Let
your hardware vendor do his own bug checking and troubleshooting.

Smarty here's what I know. If I click on that link PA Bear left, the first
one about how SP1 is not available on some machines yet, that article
mentions my conexant HD-Audio driver 4.23. Problem is, when I download the
4.31.2 from HP, it won't install on this Presario. So I disabled user
control, just because, same result.

So I think this laptop is just screwed. Check the list in that article.
Cripes we're over a year into Vista and.....nevermind....

There are a host of other reasons that Vista SP1 may not be offered to the
machine that are not cited in KB948343.

I tried to update to the latest through Device Manager. It said I had the
latest at 4.23. So I went to the HP web site. It shows a 4.31 so I
downloaded and installed their way. It wouldn't install. So then I just
make Device Mangager install it and point it to the folder made from the HP
zip install, and it won't install it that way either. It tells me I already
have the latest driver.
