    - What is Windows registry (Registry Keys) Find this tutorial and more on http://thedotnetsource.blogspot.com Reason of this project: I wrote this tutorial in order to help the hundred of programmers searching on the web for Windows registry. This is an like introduction, if you are seeking how to use and deploy the registry keys with Vb.net, just see the next tutorial (It'll be tutorial 6). In this tutorial I'll show what is the windows registry system and why use it. Project details: 1- What is Windows registry and why use it 2- How to read, write and change the registry 3- HIVES and their use 4- Definition of registry values 1- What is Windows registry and why use it. You can compare the Windows registry to a database. It stores informations related to Windows and other installed application on your system, but also Hardware. Think now if someone need to change the computer name via programming. How can he do this? Programmers can think of files (text files) to store the computer and windows information. But when file get big and heavy, Database will be more secure. And then they had (Windows builder) the choice of a database "Windows Registry". Microsoft Dot Net Frame 1.1 and higher have implemented a great solution for registry on their classes. This will replace the hard work and long lines of code that programmers have to write if they are using Visual Studio 6.0 for example. 2- How to read, write and change the registry Windows has a wonderful tool on it, named "Registry Editor". But you won't find it, unless you open the System32 folder on the Windows folder. But we can easily run it through the execute command it the start menu. Just type "regedit" (without quotes). Now the registry editor will open. Please before doing any changes on your registry make a backup. To do a windows registry backup: File > Export > Give a name for the file and select the All option box. The backup may block your pc from working for a short period of time. You'll see that there are 5 folder. Those are the main folder (named hives) and you can't add another main folder. Now you can select any folder and right click on it, then add a new sub-folder or value. By selecting any folder and right clicking, you'll find a list of action that you can do. If the action is blended (made not selectable), then either it's impossible or you don't have the rights to do this action. You need administrator rights to change registry keys. 3- HIVES (main registry folders) and their use The registry is split into a number of logical sections named "hives", those are the top main folder that can added, edited or renamed. They all start with "HKEY" prefix. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Stores information about registered applications, such as Associations from File Extensions and OLE Object Class ID's tying them to the applications used to handle these items. HKEY_CURRENT_USER Stores settings that are specific to the currently logged-in user. The HKCU key is a link to the subkey of HKEY_USERS that corresponds to the user; the same information is reflected in both locations. On Windows- NT based systems, each users' settings are stored in their own files called NTUSER.DAT and USRCLASS.DAT inside their own documents and settings subfolder. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Abbreviated HKLM, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE stores settings that are general to all users on the computer. On NT-based versions of Windows, HKLM contains four subkeys, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE and SYSTEM, that are found within their respective files located in the %SystemRoot% \System32\Config folder. A fifth subkey, HARDWARE, is volatile and is created dynamically, and as such is not stored in a file. Information about system hardware drivers and services are located under the SYSTEM subkey, whilst the SOFTWARE subkey contains software and windows settings. HKEY_USERS Contains subkeys corresponding to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys for each user registered on the machine. HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG Contains information gathered at runtime; information stored in this key is not permanently stored on disk, but rather regenerated at boot time. 4- Definition of registry values Binary Value REG_BINARY Raw binary data. Most hardware component information is stored as binary data and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format. DWORD Value REG_DWORD Data represented by a number that is 4 bytes long (a 32-bit integer). Many parameters for device drivers and services are this type and are displayed in Registry Editor in binary, hexadecimal, or decimal format. Related values are DWORD_LITTLE_ENDIAN (least significant byte is at the lowest address) and REG_DWORD_BIG_ENDIAN (least significant byte is at the highest address). Expandable String Value REG_EXPAND_SZ A variable-length data string. This data type includes variables that are resolved when a program or service uses the data. Multi-String Value REG_MULTI_SZ A multiple string. Values that contain lists or multiple values in a form that people can read are generally this type. Entries are separated by spaces, commas, or other marks. String Value REG_SZ A fixed-length text string. Binary Value REG_RESOURCE_LIST A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list that is used by a hardware device driver or one of the physical devices it controls. This data is detected and written in the \ResourceMap tree by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value. Binary Value REG_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS_LIST A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a device driver's list of possible hardware resources the driver or one of the physical devices it controls can use. The system writes a subset of this list in the \ResourceMap tree. This data is detected by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value. Binary Value REG_FULL_RESOURCE_DESCRIPTOR A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list that is used by a physical hardware device. This data is detected and written in the \HardwareDescription tree by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value. None REG_NONE Data without any particular type. This data is written to the registry by the system or applications and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value Link REG_LINK A Unicode string naming a symbolic link. QWORD Value REG_QWORD Data represented by a number that is a 64-bit integer. This data is displayed in Registry Editor as a Binary Value and was introduced in Windows 2000.     - Win XP Pro x64 and Microsoft Update, plz help... I am running the above OS and I have been able to do Updates until the other day. When I first select Microsoft Update, the URL shows v6, but everything hangs as it is waits to be scanned for Updates. Then the URL changes to Windows Update v4. Why is it changing from Microsoft Update v6 to Windows Update v4? When I select for it to Scan for Updates, I get a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page", but without any error code.     - KB943729 - startup issue I ran MS Upgrade search & installed upgrade KB943729. Afterwards when I tried to restart the PC it gave me the option to go to SETUP or run setup through the network. It would not allow me to pick either <F2/del> or F8. Even when I tried to run XP in SAFE mode, it would get to select the operating system screen and wouldnâ??t allow me to hit enter. After a few time of restarting the PC, I was able to get XP up and running. The first time I did a restore back a few days from install & that didnâ??t help. The second time I backed out the upgrade through the control panel as the upgrade document recommended. Do you think that I might be able to restart my PC, after this weekend, without a problem.     - Windows Mobile 6.1 Update breaks sync Hi, I had an "optional update" to install Windows Mobile 6.1 and "Microsoft Corporation - Networking - Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter. " That was a mistake. First, it wouldn't sync. "ActivSync has a problem with the desktop." Then, it deleted all the contacts, tasks, files, etc. from my PPC-6800. I rebooted. I reset. I deleted the sync partnership and added it back. Then, the system reported "Pocket Quicken 2.5 needs attention". ? ? ? ? Could not find how or where it needed attention. So, I unchecked the "Quicken" sync block. Now, the sync center reports something like "mobile center encountered a problem with the desktop." What gives? I did a system restore about 3 days before this update . . . the "Microsoft Corporation - Networking - Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter" is still installed as an update . . . I thought System Restore was supposed to remove all that? Now, it seems to start to synch, and it just hangs. I thought if you had Windows update failures, you had free support? What do I do now?     - Non booting after SP1 install I have just installed Vista SP1. On re booting I can only get as far as the 'Welcome' screen, the screen then goes black with a white mouse pointer.     - KB943460 blocks shockwave player Using IE6 on Windows XP sp2, and adobe flash player and shockwave player. Once KB943460 was installed, .swf files wouldn't play anymore.     - Windows Update and SP1 SP1 would not appear for me in the Windows Update even though all hardware and software met MS' spec's for Vista. I did upgrade my sound card and software in order to meet spec's. I decided to download SP1 from MS download page to get the standalone version. After waiting a couple weeks and reading this and other NG's I decided to install SP1. It installed with out a hitch. I didn't need to un-hook USB devices as was recommended in these NG's and I didn't need to disconnect my UPS. Mater of fact SP1 recommends that you connect to a UPS so you won't lose power while installing. The only things I did disable where Windows Defender Fire walls and Virus autoscan protection.     - IE7, WindowsUpdate yields HTTP 400 Error New installation of MS WXP Pro with SP2, NIS 2008. The machine connects to the Internet, the IPConfig /All looks right, MS Messenger connects, as does e-mail. Yet IE7 yields an HTTP 400 error on every attempt to connect to a web page but the first one. Meaning - if I Reset IE7 in Internet Options I can connect to the Microsoft.com home page, but can NOT click on any link from there. I cannot at any time open WindowsUpdate nor MicrosoftUpdate. Other web pages fail too. All MS Updates were installed earlier this month, NIS 2008 appears to be updating fine and has the most current version of its updates - from the best that I can tell.     - Possible reason for SP1 not listed at Windows Update I posted earlier about not finding SP1 listed when I use Windows Update; I might now know why. I had gone through the eight reasons why SP1 might not be listed, and thought I had covered them all. I knew that the 'bad' Microsoft driver file ks.sys was listed in conjunction with a Logitech webcam, but, not having a Logitech webcam I figured that bit of info didn't apply to me. But yesterday when I was again trying to figure out why SP1 wasn't listed I did a system search, and sure enough ks.sys was there in the driver files. So maybe that is the whole reason. The article says that Microsoft will issue an update to correct the problem with ks.sys, and then SP1 will be available for those systems that presently have the 'bad' version. I've hesitated to simply delete ks.sys from my system, because I'm not sure what other programs or processes use it. Would deleting it likely cause other problems? I'm using a standalone Vista SP1 package that I have used on 3 other Vista boxes with no trouble. On this HP lappy it will always error out with an error code: 0x80070059. I have: 1. Run chkdsk 2. Memory test 3. sfc /scannow 4. And the only answer I see in a half hour of Googling.     - Update to Sigma Tel Audio Codec Drivers for Vista sp1 I called microsoft yesterday asking what will be done via this problem for those who cannot get updated drivers for the Sigma Tel audio driver. The problem is Sigma no longer makes audio drivers and passed it off to another company who told me they are not making updated drivers at all for this type of audio codec. So how do you get updated drivers if you cannot? I have been on many forums via Dell and Gateway and thousand of customers have the same problem. First microsoft was giving advise to uninstall the driver and allow Vista to find its own drivers for this. Many did this and found they still had no sound. Microsoft also said to uninstall drivers, put sp1 on and then reput back the driver for sigman tel. Many who did this found after the sp1 install, when trying to put back the driver, Vista now came back with an error msg saying "This driver is not compatable for Vista" so they wound up again with no sound. Well after talking to the tech and he confirmed that this is what was being said- now when people call in they are telling them not do do anything and wait because microsoft is working on a solution to this. They say it will show up in Windows Update either a patch or fix for this problem. This security update for EXCEL will not install on my machine and now I cannot get exel to run unless I look for the exe in the programs file and start it from there. Each time I try to run excel the application crashes because the install fails. I accidentally told the SP1 to stop as it was installing. Now, whenever I
try to install it. The screen halts at 0% installed and the computer seems
to lock a bit.

This is the error I am getting. Can anyone help me please?

The error I got when I accidentally cancelled was 8024000B. The error I get
now is "failed" and with this error 8010108
