Hi
1) I've tried stopping the service and loading the recommended command
prompts into the registry and then re-starting the service
2) I've downloaded an updated installer
Neither one of these usual corrections seems to work in my case. I was
wondering if anyone else had the same problem with different or additional
methods of correction?
This started when I had to do a partial restore on my computer due to a
virus.
Any and all comments and solutions will be most appreciated. Many thanks, Don

Mine started (I think but then again immediately after my SP3 update I do
remember seeing Microsoft Update complete .... but it definitely has
something to do with my Beta Internet Explorer update and then having to
reinstall or try to update my MSN Live Messenger .. or is it MSN Messenger
... whatever ... you need that in order to get MSN Mail and that is what my
preference is.

Anyway Don one thing that worked for me before and I am sorry if I am
responding and it is NOT helpful but reading what you have done is EXACTLY
NOW WHAT I HAVE BEEN DOING FOR DAYS because I am not even getting an error
number message anymore .. I just keep on downloading and copying and
registering the "new" Microsoft Windows Update tool and files. BUT I just
ALSO RESTARTED MY BACKGROUND INTELLIGENT TRANSFER SERVICE which has been
turning itself off lately for no reason. I have it set to Manual and it
turns off. At least now it is on and I know in the past that has WORKED to
allow the Microsoft Windows Update service to work. Unfortunately I just
downloaded and copied and re-registered the tool and files once more and mine
did not start. So I am now going to research the last error number I got
which was

Description: Product: Windows Live Messenger -- The installer has
encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a
problem with this package. The error code is 2771.

The arguments are: MsgrFeat, ,

You may still have a problem with the virus depending upon what virus you
had.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

Define "partial restore"?

Oh gosh I have so many spyware programs and even bought the Lavasoft most
recent one and it is not expired .. anyway long story short .. I dismantled
it and also even SpyBot which I liked ... and have Hijack This too ... but
for heavens sake .. am spending enough on Norton 360 and seems that the cross
configuring of all of these programs confuses me more and more after years of
downloading and updating them. I wish I could just have one program do the
spyware as well as the viruses. I still can not update my Microsoft Updates
and I ran some Norton tool today to correct the registry in case a problem
occurred with the install of SP3 ... I don't think that is it. I have
Internet Explorer 8 Beta .. and I have MSN Messenger .. version 7 something.
It looks like I do not have Windows Live Messenger 8.5 ... I think it was
uninstalled and it was giving me problems ..

If I am getting no error message any longer with Microsoft update .. except
for some flash real quick message at the top about Active X installing .. but
then it disappears .. Is there a particular Active X download that I should
have to run Microsoft update. And why does my Internet Explorer Options
Advanced in the back not update my Java to the JRE 1.6.0_07 but instead just
stays at the JRE 1.6.0_05? Could that affect the Microsoft Update page?
Shoot this is exhausting. Sorry. My last Norton update and scans did not
come up with anything but I am wondering if the firewall needs to have the
Microsoft Update program configured into it. Norton never answers anything
easy and so I am sorry for asking it here. Please help if you can because I
am worried that without the Windows updates my whole system will be
vulnerable. Windows XP SP3 obviously with MSN Mail

I don't have a partial restore .. I don't have an error message either
though. I just keep on running the microsoft update and needing to download
and copy and install the "new" registry files over and over. Can't even show
my history of updates which normally I could. What could it be? Sorry my
questions are numerous ... I guess without an specific error number I am more
lost. This has happened before but I have fixed it with an error code.
Should I go to the Windows Events and state what happens there? Here is one
of the addresses I keep going back to in order to update ... is there
anything wrong with this address?

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/itemdetails.aspx?iPage=2&index=7&ErrorCode=1316&ln=en-us

Then I also tried this after putting the latest Windows Update executable
under my Program Files ...

C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

I had trouble though with the run command thru the directory of Program
Files .. so I put the .exe just in the C directory and ran the command and it
worked and then I went to the site and thought it was going to work because I
at least saw the yellow graphic start to roll ... but then it stopped.

Could you answer whether it is mandatory that I need Windows Live Messenger?
I am under the impression now that it is not. That my last install of MSN
Messenger is enough .. is that correct? This is what is running:

MSN Messenger
Version 7.0 (Build 7.0.0820)
(Says microsoft .NET in lite gray)
This is my version on Sept 20, 2008

but I did just download the Win Live Messenger install file and put it under
Program Files .. Windows Live .. Messenger .. but I have not run it yet ...
and I never use a messaging program. I have Windows Live but I don't use it
as my search tool and can not install the photo library.

Boy I know I have put quite a few things here but these are all what have
needed updating lately and they are the things that were done prior to
Windows Update stopping working. I don't know whether to call it Microsoft
Update or Windows Update. I have 2 separate links for those.

Any help would be much appreciated.
