Automatic Updates have been failing for for awhile, even Microdoft Update
fails & gives me the Error 0x80246008. Looked at some posts & tech bulletins
& checked BITS, but it seems to be working fine (at least it's started in
Services).

Yesterday I tried something I saw in a thread (that I can't find again).
Told to 'run' 6 or 7 regsvr32wu...dll files and then to go back & 'register'
(?) them. All but 1 'registered', that one said something about no reference
entry point (I know I'm off on terminology here, hope someone alot smarter
than me can figure out what I'm trying to get at). Dummy me didn't write
down any of the messages & now I can't find the site where I got the advice
from.

Still, anyone with any ideas given this rather sketchy description of the
problem?

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the
"0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft
Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;910337

You receive an error message when you try to download updates from the
Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site, or when you
try to start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916251/en-us?spid=6527

You receive a "The necessary services are disabled or unavailable" error
message when you connect to the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or to the
Microsoft Update Web site
[T"he necessary services are disabled or unavailable. Error 0x80246008"]

Tried suggestions & still not there. Did get different subsequent error
codes, first 0x800A01CE, then 0x800706BA. BITS is listed as started in
SERVICES, don't think it's a BITS problem.

<cmd_output OS="XPsp2">
E:\>set /a c = 0x6BA
1722
E:\>net helpmsg %c%

The RPC server is unavailable.
<cmd_output>

What about RPCSS? Hint: do a sc qc bits to see that RPCSS is a dependency
for BITS.

Also, to check on the status of your BITS you could use bitsadmin:

bitsadmin /util /version /verbose
