Hi i recently formatted my computer and reinstalled my Windows XP Service
pack 1 version. Now when trying to update on the update web page it searches
endlessly and no results come up. I have tested my internet connection and it
seems to be fine. Any help would be much appreciated.

Clean installation?

My suggestion is - being a completely clean installation - you have nothing
to risk in installing the latest service pack manually - now...

Download the IT version or the CD ISO and burn it to CD... Use one or the
other to install SP3 on your clean machine. Start out fully patched.

Direct download of Windows XP SP3 (Executable file):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en

Direct download of Windows XP SP3 (ISO image of CD):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2fcde6ce-b5fb-4488-8c50-fe22559d164e&DisplayLang=en

Free Program you could utilize to burn the ISO file to an actual CD:

If - for some reason - you just 'feel the need' to go through Service Pack 2
before going to SP3 (no real need if you have SP1 already) - then:

Direct Download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP

If you want to just fix your updates - try this:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation

(Ignore the title - it may fix your problem reguardless of how you got to
the situation you are now in...)

Examine Microsft KB 943144 for a fix
