Error 80072EFD....yet again
Tried all instructions in all posts, articles, help, etc. No Go. Have 25
clients that used to be able to auto-update without problems. Just noticed
the latest update in the network is 2/18/08. We are running XPSP2 on clients
with our IP traffic through Windows Server 2000 with ISA 2000. Have checked
and configured all sites in Trusted Sites on clients and in ISA Management |
Access Policy | Site and Content Rules | Windows Update AND | Access Policy |
Protocol Rules | Windows Update AND | Policy Elements | Destination Sets |
Windows Update. I even tried disabling all of these to allow "ALL". No go.
Turned Real Time Virus Scan off on the test client and the IP Traffic Server.
No go. What am I missing? Any ideas? By the way, this all started when a
particular client's IE could no longer identify/use a personal digital
certificate required to access one of our sites required to process a
critical function. Thanks for any help!!!!! Tag: Unable to update Tag: 261502

Installed But Shows Up
I recently reformated my computer and installed Windows XP SP3 right after.
After I installed SP3, there were some High Priority updates available. So I
installed them successfully and restarted my computer. Then I noticed there
were 4 High Priority updates left. I tried to install those last 4, but they
failed every time. After looking in the Windows Update Discussions, I've
learned a few things and noticed that those 4 updates all have a size of 0
KB. I read some where that they could have been installed during the SP3
installation. I am not able to hide them and the Automatic Updates alerts
are extremely annoying. Is there some way where I can hide these updates or
just make it stop alerting me?

Vista updates wont work
Strange thing has happened a couple of days ago. I turned on my pc and an
update notification arrived in the taskbar. When I went to open it to find
out what updates they were it wouldn't open the window.
Since then I can't open a number of services by right clicking or through
control panel, and the windows update notification is stuck in the task bar.
All that happens when I click to open is a window opens then shuts really
quick like it's loading, then dissapears.
I have done a system restore from the DVD media but it has not worked.
I have used the system restore with in windows to restore to an earier point
when I know it was working. Still
doesn't work.
I've gone into services.msc from the start menu and i've got SL UI
Notification service set to manual, and it is
off, and software licensing is set to auto and is started.
I set SL UI Notification to automatic and started it, then re-booted.
Checked services again and it has stayed on
automatic but the service status is showing as stopped. Re-started service,
but still not working.
Any how i've made a list of the services that wont open either through
control panel, right click or typing them
into the search bar from the start menu.

All updates failing
I just reinstalled Windows XP due to a disk crash. The update site worked
well for most of the process until all updates started failing (critical or
not). I turned Microsoft updates on and off with no change. I also rebooted
along the way. I was able to download and install individual updates by
searching them by name, including Internet explorer 7 and Media player 11.
Office updates worked as well on the office site. I still have a driver that
I can't get through the update site. One thing that seems to go along with
most of these failed updates is that the size is stated as 0KB and 0 minutes.
Updates were running reasonably fast at first (seconds). Then they began to
take about 10 minutes to scan. Turning off Microsoft Updates brought it back
to full speed (still failing but much faster).
This is the message I consistently get:

The page failed to load.
Recently my Dell XPS m1530 automatically installed a Windows Update and now I
am having issues. I am repeatedly told to update by a bubble on the taskbar.
When I attempt to run Windows Update, the window for the program is blank
with the message "The page failed to load" in the center of the window.
Furthermore, when trying to run nearly any application, I recieve the message
"File system error (65535)." Also, many of the icons have been changed, for
things such as the Recycle Bin, Desktop, Music, Pictures, Videos, Documents,
and many more. Moreover, a bubble pops up on the taskbar notifying me of
Problem Reports and Solutions that wants to fix my computer. Upon clicking
this, a window pops up for a second and quickly exits itself. The control
panel will no longer load. I have tried to run chkdsk, but that will not
work. Also, I have tried system restore, but it noted I had errors, tried to
fix them, failed to do so, and now claims I have no restore points.
Any ideas?

Windows (Microsoft) update mistakenly lists "Visual Studio 2005"
Why is it on all my PCs, running mostly XP SP3, the Windows Update page lists
"Visual Studio 2005" as a product that updates are tracked for when none of
the PCs have VS2005 installled. In fact, some of the effected PCs don't have

Using symbolic links to fit XP and Office on ultra low cost PC's
Summary:
Trying to get Microsoft Installer and Microsoft Update to recognise
symbolic links that redirect
C:\WINDOWS\Installer --> D:\WINDOWS\Installer
C:\MSOCache --> D:\MSOCache
The Installer and Update in XP with SP3 removes the symbolic link,
replacing with a folder which is then populated with the current
install
or update.
Detail:
With the advent of "netbooks" a.k.a. ultralow-cost PCs, Microsoft
committed to support XP on these machines through January 2010
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2008/jun08/06-03ComputexPR.mspx.
The first popular netbook, the ASUS eeePC's have small solid state
disk (SSD) drives 4 - 8 GB in size and an SD card slot
I am Technology Director of a public charter school in Massachusetts,
grades 7 - 12. It makes good sense to configure netbooks for use in
the academic environment. For that reason I am experimenting with an
ASUS eeePC 701. This eeePC has a 4 GB SSD and an 8 GB SDHC card
configured as the 2nd fixed disk drive.
I slimmed down, that is, removed extraneous functions from XP with
SP3
using nlite http://www.nliteos.com/. The operating system and basic
applications occupy about 2.5 GB of the 4 GB SSD. This is not a fully
functional install, merely the necessary functions required in our
academic environment. Basic applications include: Adobe Reader, Adobe
Flash, Mozilla Thunderbird, Symantec Endpoint Protechtion. Acronis
True Image Echo Workstation is also installed for image backup.
The school uses Microsoft Office. We looked into OpenOffice and
judged
its user interface, rendering, and storing of office documents
imperfect. I configured Office to install on the D: drive. The Office
application with only the functionality required by the school
occupies under 400 MB. The D:\MSOCache occupies about 700 MB.
The issue I'm now working on is redirecting or installing certain XP
folders to the D: drive.
To wit:
(1) The folder C:\WINDOWS\Installer. The folder is currently
almost 800 MB. I've tried moving the folder to D:\WINDOWS\Installer,
replacing the original folder with a symbolic link using Sysinternals
junction http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768.aspx.
Windows Update and Windows Installer 3.1 do not "play well" with the
symbolic link C:\WINDOWS\Installer --> D:\WINDOWS\Installer. The
symbolic link is removed, replaced with a folder which is then
populated with the update du jour or install du jour.
(2) The folder D:\MSOCache. Windows update nevertheless creates
C:\MSOCache, populating with duplicates of the contents of D:
\MSOCache.
I think, but I don't know, Update and Installer would be clueless and
ruthless
to a symbolic link C:\MSOCache --> D:\MSOCache
I don't understand why the Installer and Update processes don't work
with these symbolic links and what could be done to make them
recognize
the symbolic links.
What to do?
An alternative might be to search through the registry
and replace every instance of C:\WINDOWS\Installer with D:\WINDOWS
\Installer.
That, needless to say, is rather kludgy. There are hundreds, if not
thousands
of values containing C:\WINDOWS\Installer.
If/when this problem is resolved we will have the basic configuration
for introducing netbooks in our school.

Error code 80070005 when trying to install monitor driver update
Windows update just offered a recommended update to my monitor driver. It
failed to install and gave error code 8007005.
The install file shows "HP - other hardware - HP w2207 wide LCD,
recommended, failed, 6/29" No other info. I tried rebooting and
reinstalling several times, to no avail.
I'm running Vista Home Premium SP-1 with all other updates. I'm the only
user acccount with administrator priveleges, and user account control is
turned on.
I'm also unable to get HP's My Display software to run under Vista SP-1. It
fails to launch. It is needed in order to use the portrait (pivot) display
feature of this monitor.
I've been through (literally) six rounds with HP support chat, trying
multiple different ways to uninstall and reinstall, also to no avail. They
basically gave up.
The monitor resolution is fine...but i can't use all its features because
the display software won't work.
Then, suddenly windows auto update offered this driver update...which won't
install.
So...I suspect the problems are related.

Common problems preventing updates to XP SP 3 and Vista SP 1
I have experiencied both a failed XP Professional Service Pack 3 installation
on my desktop system and a failed Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 installation
on my laptop. (And both failed because of Registry errors.) HMMMMMM! This
begs the question: What is the same between these two machines? What program
corrupted my registry on both systems??????
My common programs for both machines include:
Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium
Microsoft Office Professional 2007
Logitech wireless mouse (and associated software)
Canon Digital Camera and associated software
I have since successfully installed the service pack updates on both
systems...but the methods to do so were very different. And both required A
LOT OF TIME. (Total...this has taken nearly FIVE FULL DAYS TO CORRECT.) Can
you imagine a busines trying to do this????
When I tried to install Service Pack 3 on my XP system I kept getting an
"Access Denied" error towards the end of the installation processes.
Fortunately, I own Dell computers and the User Groups came to my rescure! A
discussion group forum poster suggested that for my XP system, I use
â??Dial-A-Fixâ??â??
wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles (copy and paste this into your browser)
scroll down until you see Dial-a-fix v0.60.0.24 (2006-10-27)
and click to download the fileâ?¦then run thingsâ?¦click on the tool icon and
repair permissions, etc. (See:
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_winxp&thread.id=253012&view=by_date_ascending&page=4 )
I downloaded and ran this program and then tried the XP Service Pack 3
again. This time instead of â??access deniedâ??â?¦, IT INSTALLED LIKE A CHARM
Unfortunately, there dosen't seem to be a registry repair program available
for Vista yet. So I had to resort to a complete repair installation of the
operating system (get ready if you have this problem, because the repair
option takes about 3 hours to complete...and I have a fast computer!). The
good news is that Service Pack 1 installed fine after I "upgraded"/repaired
my system on my Vista computer.
Because both of my computers experienced problems upgrading, I suspect
software that I installed on both as the culprit. You can agree or disagree
with meâ?¦but I strive to keep my computers up-to-date and free of any
malwareâ?¦problems, etc. In the past, I have never had a problem installing a
service pack from Microsoft/Windowsâ?¦so itâ??s curious why I endured a
hellacious experience for both my XP Professional Service Pack 3 installation
on my desktop system and my Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 installation on my
laptop.
The common software on these machines is Adobe Creative Suite 3. I truly
suspect something in the installation of this software corrupted my registry.
As I look back, I have noted that I could never install another Windows Mail
Junk Mail Filter update on my Vista machine after I installed this package.
And, on both systems I've had Adobe updates fail to install (for reasons
unknown)...Go Figure! I've never had a Windows update fail on my XP system,
so I canâ??t date any failures here until the Service Pack â??Permission Deniedâ??
failure.
Anywayâ?¦I want you to know that I finally have both of my home systems
running properly with all updates installed. If anyone at Microsoft wants to
follow up on other Adobe Creative Suite 3 users who may have experienced
similar problemsâ?¦.feel free to do so.
If Adobe isnâ??t the culpritâ?¦then other identical software on my two machines
includes:
Microsoft Office Professional 2007
iTunes ver. 7.6.2.9 (and several earlier versions of this software dating
back to April, 2007 when I purchased my laptop.)
plus, all of the software from a new Canon digital camera and I have a
Logitech wireless mouse connect to each machine.
I appreciate the free help Microsoft is providing customers. (I havenâ??t
heard anything about my Vista problems yetâ?¦., however.) If my personal
experience can help you pinpoint the reason why some computer systems fail to
upgradeâ?¦Iâ??m happy to help!
