I get the following error when I try to install SP3 for XP. It says "Service
Pack 3 Setup Error" "Access is Denied". I tried twice, the second time
without my firewall software running. Still got the error. Checked the
update log and it showed "Error Code: 0x80070005. Checked registry...the ID
has full permissions. Anybody know how to fix this?

Hello Rebel,

Error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3: "Access is
denied" or â??Service Pack installation did not completeâ??

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377>

Hopefully that should rectify the situation.

Good luck

First, make sure that your anti virus software is locking the registry and preventing the
installer from modifying the same.

Hi Taurian: Since this is the place to learn about problems, here goes a stupid
question :) How do you get your AV to lock the registry? If and when I decide
to download and install will turn off AV+Firewall/Antispyware progs during
install and re-enable when done.

I have Panda AV+Firewall 2008, I've looked around in that program and don't see
an option for locking the registry. I'm new to Panda, so maybe that's why I
can't find it yet. Never had trouble finding things in Symantec, Trend Micro,
AVG etc. I see a blurb when something tries to change the registry, so I can
handle that-thank goodness. I defrag once a week along with AV scans,
antispyware scans etc ( AdAware 2007 *yuck*, Spybot, Panda info above plus real
time antispyware with it, Stinger if I ever need it, Phil's program if I ever
need it, and many others plus I use online scanners as well to double check my
AV ad nauseum).

I never had any trouble with any of the other SP's, completed on 3 computers, so
should I expect some with SP3, since I've already read the recommendations of
how to prepare for the download at MS' Help and Support page, and none of it
*seems* to apply to me, or I've already completed the rec's? I'm a fanatic
about Virus, Antispyware, Rootkit scannings and have only picked up a couple of
things in 5 years, but my AV handled them.

Can you tell me if there are any new IE7 updates in SP3 that are important? I
have all that were released so far.

TIA

Win XP Home (all critical and non critical updates applied-always) Have Auto
Updates turned off, just in case:)
IE7 plus all updates
60 GB HD with 70% free
256 MB of Memory (not enough)
SP3 on MS Office/SP2 on Windows

If you need more info on computer let me know.

Hi again TaurArian: Sorry, I meant to say Dave Lipman's program, not Phil
Weldon. I got the names mixed up, it's been awhile since I've been here:(
Sorry about messing up your name too. Please forgive for not starting a new
thread, since my question doesn't have much to do with the original posters
questions-forgive me, won't do it again.

*You all are great* and I don't know what we would do without you!!!!!!!! You
and all MVP's desire constant Thanks...

Hi Engel,

I have had a similar problem with the instalation. Receiving Error Code
0x80070005.
I found the suport advice last night and have tried all 3 options.
Uninstalled AVG 8 free (as there is no way to disable). I then reset the
registry (and yes the registry update had failed) lastly I downloaded the
fulle version form the link but received a message SP3 cannot update a
checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of sp3 or vice cersa.
Have you or anyone else in this group any ideas please? Just one thought
would SpyBot Search & destroy prevent this installation?
