    - Update installation failures Yesterday I had to reinstall Windows XP. I updated it via SP3. However, Windows subsequently discovered a number of additional updates. I have tried to install the following updates three times without success.     - SP3 Access denied. My OS: WinXP SP2 fully patched, all updates are current (except KB936929). Capacity: 74.5 GB Used space: 16.4 GB Free space: 58.0 GB Prior downloading SP3 (KB936929) I defragged the disk, scanned with Kaspersky AV for malware, then paused the AV application and unchecked 'Use real-time protection' in WinDef. The System Restore points were flushed also. I don't have a 3rd party firewall and use the in-build application. The download went well and is shown in Add or Remove Programs panel but I got an "Access denied" error during installation. The installation process stopped and I had to click a prompt to uninstall SP3. I started the entire process again from the beginning (3 times) but still no luck. According to the progress bar, I noticed that the installation process terminated at about 50% or so while trying to install an item called UNIDRV.DLL (I was very fortunate to notice this).     - KB915597 - Defender My daughter, who is running Vista Home Basic, was offered KB915597, on 24 April 2008. She has always used AVG free antivirus on her computer and although she has had this computer for 18 months, this is the first time she has had a definition update for Defender - I don't remember any either. She checked to see what version of Defender she has and it is Def Ver 1.31.9351.0 KB915597 issued 24 April shows a Def Ver of 1.31.9309.0. Is this an older version to the one she already has?     - Windows XP Service Pack 3 Error Code: 0x80070005 Trying to update this Windows XP SP2 box to SP3. Went to the update web site, downloaded OK. During installation, had registry access errors (!) on HKCR\RDSServer.DataFactor.2.8.1 and a couple of related keys. Changed permissions, tried again. No pop-up errors about the registry this time, but XP3 update failed again, error code 0x80070005. Found the comments from people who had similar problems on XP2, with especial regard to KB873148. Using the info in that KB article, checked %windir%\svcpack.log and, yep, had DoRegistry falures in there.. So, turned on full debug as described in the article, reran the thing until it died. Fired up my local text editor (xemacs, what the heck), and went looking for the failed registry keys in %windir%\setupapi.log. Only problem - no failed registry keys!     - VISTA SP1 :: 3GB versus 4GB of memory? Installed Vista Service Pack 1, and i was wondering if it made 32-bit users to utilize all 4GB of system memory (RAM) instead of the maximum 3GB. the System Properties shows i have 4GB (which is correct) but the task manager shows only 3GB, as well as my other programs, CCleaner and my Sidebar gadget, the CPU Usage one. did Service Pack 1 fix this? or do i really need to shell out more money AGAIN for the 64-bit version? After few days, the Windows Update is showing the following items in the list: 1) Office 2003 SP3 2) Office 2007 SP1 Why is it showing Office 2003, when I don't have this product installed on my PC. And why is it showing Office 2007, when I have already installed Office 2007 SP1?     - Working with Optional Updates I am having a difficult time trying to decide whether or not to install optional updates. Is Windows Update for XP and/or Vista smart enough to only recommend updates for components I actually have on my machine? Or must I check to see whether or not a particular update even applies to my situation? And why are they "optional" in the first place? How can I make an educated decision about installing them? Could it "hurt" anything to just go ahead and install all of the optional updates? It's a no brainer with foreign language updates; if I don't speak French, I don't need extra stuff for that language. Much harder for everything else though.     - Microsoft Zune 2.5 Update Hi, I tried to download and install the new Microsoft Zune Update 2.5 for my computer; however, it does download with no problems, but when it get to install the update it gives me an error. The error code that it gives me is 0x80070643 with a message that says "setup must stop because the required package 'Zune' didn't install. What should I do to fix this problem?     - XP Service Pack 3 Error while installing Hello, I receive an error stating I do not have enough drive space available on c:\windows\$NTServicePackUninstall..$ and that it needs 4 Meg of space. I do not see this folder when browsing (with view hidden and system files) and I have over a 100Gig of drive space available. This is a fresh install on boot camp.     - Cant use the Microsoft/Windows Update website. I want to install XP SP3 and my automatic updates havent offered me it yet. So I decided to go to the Microsoft/Windows Update website to download it myself. When I get there, I pick between Express or Custom, and it starts to check for updates. For some reason, the update check NEVER ENDS. Ive left it for about an hour and it doesnt seem to gain any progress. The little animation goes back and forth but nothing ever happens. When I run Windows update it says that I need to install the following security updates (under SP3 all updates were installed): Security Update for Windows XP (KB946026) Security Update for Windows XP (KB943055) Security Update for Windows XP (KB941693) Security Update for Windows XP (KB945553) Security Update for Windows XP (KB948590) All of these updates fail. When I attempt to install these manually I get a splash screen Titled "KB946026 Setup Error" that says "Files from the package are incompatible with files on your system".     - Windows update replaces incorrect audio driver... Folks, When I installed Vista on my machine, the installation correctly identified my audio hardware as "Via AC 97" and installed the correct driver. The driver version is 6.0.6000.16386 (Provider: Microsoft. Dated: 6/21/06). Later, Windows update identifies this hardware as "Realtek AC 97" and installs an incorrect driver. This version is 6.0.1.6285 (Provider: Realtek. Dated: 3/25/08). Although the driver gets installed successfully, it fails to start with an error code 10. The workaround is to uninstall the audio driver and rescan the hardware. This brings back the old driver. I have set update settings to "Check for updates but let me choose when to install them." However, the shutdown button from the start menu still installs this update. There is also a "shutdown" menu item that does not install drivers. However, the box is used by the whole family and sometimes they just click on shutdown button to shut the machine. Questions: 1. Is there a way to disable download/install of this specific driver permanently? 2. A more general question. Is there a way to inform Windows update team of this issue? 3.
