SP3 Error code Ox80072EFE

SP3 will download but not install. Error code 0x80072EFE any ideas what this
means? Am using XP Home Edition with Windows OneCare as anti Virus.

I had the same problem without Windows OneCare. There was a special page on
Windows Update that asked to install XP SP3. The installation failed.

Afterwards, Windows Update insisted there were no updates available. Some
two hours later Windows suddenly showed the normal update page and offered
SP3, like any normal patch. This time it all worked.

Ehm, you did read the MSKB article I've linked to above and that
didn't help?

Traced problem to registry error. This allowed SP3 to install, but then PC
would only start in safe mode! Used Restore Point to go back. Still need to
install SP3
