First step is to read this: Steps to take before you install Windows XP
Service Pack 3

Next, download the standalone Version of SP3:

*SAVE* it, do *not* run it.
After the download is finished and you've taken the steps suggested in
KB950717, create a folder on the root drive [the drive where Windows is
installed to, ususlly C:\] and name it XP SP3.
Move WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe to that folder.
Click Start > Run > click the Browse button
In the left frame click the My Computer icon
In the right frame, click on the drive where the XP SP3 folder is located
Click Open
Click on the XP SP3 folder, click Open
Click once on WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe to highlight it, then
click the Open button once more
Click OK
