I have downloaded the SP3 CD image from the MS Download Centre and copied it
to a CD. You recommend that during SP3 installation the anti-virus is
disabled, in which case I would like to disconnect the machine from the
Internet. Does the SP3 install process access the Internet when running from
the CD image?

Also, my machine (under French XP Prof) will not run well if Automatic
Updates are activated - it hangs initialising the updates, displaying the
list of installed programs, accessing the E:\ drive, etc. Will this cause
problems with the installation of SP3? (Note that with the auto update
service deactivated, it runs fine).

Will SP3, if successfully installed, eliminate the above problems?

No.

No - and that indicates an issue you probably want to resolve anyway.

No idea - not enough information really. It could exasperate them. Make
sure you do an extra backup before you install SP3.

David,

If the Automatic Update service is causing issues, please check this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

Click the ' Windows XP, all versions (including all versions of Windows
XP Media Center) ' link at the top of the page.

Has KB927891 been installed ?
Has the latest Version of the Windows Update Agent[WUA] been installed?

Show hidden files, folders, and system files to confirm the Versions of
msi.dll and wuauclt.exe by locating them in WINDOWS\system32, right
click them, choose Properties, click the Version tab:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

IF msi.dll is at V. 3.1.4000.4039, then KB927891 is installed.
IF wuauclt.exe is at V. 7.0.6000.381, then the latest V. is installed.

If they are LOWER Version levels, then use the links under 'Resolution'
to obtain KB927891 and the latest V. of the WUA.
IF a message appears during the installation of the WUA stating that it
is already installed, please see:
